Considerations concerning the renormalization of the electroweak sector of the standard model
1990
Abstract Examination of the structure of one-loop corrected amplitudes for arbitrary processes mediated by W, Z and γ in the simple renormalization framework previously discussed by the author, leads to natural choices for the renormalized self-energies and vertex corrections. They satisfy simple renormalization conditions and, as q2 → 0, the W and Z propagators approach the free expressions with a correction of O(αq2/mW2). The renormalization conditions allow us to circumvent certain ambiguities that arise, to O(α2), in current analyses of Δr and κ(q2). A useful simplified form for the Z propagator is presented.
Current Account Adjustment and Retained Earnings
2018
This paper develops a formal strategy to calculate current accounts with retained earnings (RE) on equity investment and analyzes their adjustment during the global financial crisis. RE are the part of companies' profits which are reinvested and not distributed to shareholders as dividends. International statistical standards treat RE on foreign direct investment and RE on portfolio investment differently: while the former enter the current and financial account, the latter do not. We show that this differential treatment strongly affects current accounts of several advanced economies, frequently referred to as financial centers, with large positions in equity (portfolio) investment. Our em…
Current-induced domain wall motion in nanoscale ferromagnetic elements
2011
The manipulation of a magnetic domain wall (DW) by a spin polarized current in ferromagnetic nanowires has attracted tremendous interest during the last years due to fundamental questions in the fields of spin dependent transport phenomena and magnetization dynamics but also due to promising applications, such as DW based magnetic memory concepts and logic devices. We comprehensively review recent developments in the field of geometrically confined domain walls and in particular current induced DW dynamics. We focus on the influence of the magnetic and electronic transport properties of the materials on the spin transfer effect in DWs. After considering the different DW structures in ferrom…
Prediction of river discharges at confluences based on Entropy theory and surface-velocity measurements
2022
Hydrodynamic features of the confluence zone of large rivers are complicated because of their three-dimensional flow structure. The confluence between the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões, characterised by black and white waters, respectively, ranks among the largest river junctions on Earth. An Entropy-based investigation was carried out to assess the discharge and analyse the 2D structure of velocity distribution for large river flows relying on monitoring of near-surface velocity only. The estimated flow data where compared with in-situ ADCP data gathered across some transects of the Negro and Solimões rivers during both low and relatively high flow conditions. Results are illustrated thro…
Die chronisch rekurrierende multifokale Osteomyelitis (CRMO)
1998
Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an unusual clinical entity. More than 200 cases are described in the literature and it is presented here with special reference to its radiological aspects. It is an acquired disease of the skeleton which occurs predominantly during childhood and adolescence. About ten per cent of cases begin in early or, rarely, in later adult life. This variant is described here for the first time and is discussed as "adult CRMO". The underlying pathology is a bland, predominantly lympho-plasma cellular osteomyelitis which is self-limiting and leads to bone sclerosis (Garre). It probably involves an abnormal immune process which follows an infection but…

2001
We report about the juvenile and adolescent pelvic type of CRMO in 7 girls and 4 boys. The results show from solitary up to 7 pelvic lesions (average 3 lesions) predominantly in the acetabular and paraacetabular region (sometimes with hip joint effusion as a sign for concomitant coxitis).Tc99m-bone-scan is helpful to evaluate exactly the pattern of bone affection. We find 3 stages of an primarily chronic, non-purulent osteomyelitis going along with a "plasma-cell-sclerotic process", leading to a Garre-type sclerosing end-stage, which probably heals after some years spontaneously, projecting on clinical symptoms and radiological appearance. The concomitant coxitis ("sympathetic coxitis") is …

2000
In this preliminary communication we report our experience with Azithromycin in patients with Chronic Recurring Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO). Seven out of 13 patients, mainly teenager, showed a fast clinical improvement after they were started on Azithromycin. The immediate therapeutic effect of Azithromycin in patients with CRMO was surprising and lead us to the hypothesis that Azithromycin could have an antiphlogistic in addition to it's antibiotic effect in this disease setting. In patients with reactive chronic pelvic osteomyelitis Azithromycin obviously had a direct influence on the sympathic coxitis. Half of the patients reported an immediate reduction of pain and a significant imp…
First Observation of PeV-Energy Neutrinos with IceCube
2013
We report on the observation of two neutrino-induced events which have an estimated deposited energy in the IceCube detector of 1.04 $\pm$ 0.16 and 1.14 $\pm$ 0.17 PeV, respectively, the highest neutrino energies observed so far. These events are consistent with fully contained particle showers induced by neutral-current $\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$ ($\bar\nu_{e,\mu,\tau}$) or charged-current $\nu_{e}$ ($\bar\nu_{e}$) interactions within the IceCube detector. The events were discovered in a search for ultra-high energy neutrinos using data corresponding to 615.9 days effective livetime. The expected number of atmospheric background is $0.082 \pm 0.004 \text{(stat)}^{+0.041}_{-0.057} \text{(syst)}$. T…
