Platforms for Human-Human Interaction in Large Social Events
2012
In this paper we present the evolution of QRouteMe, an information system built to provide people with rich user experiences when attending museums or exhibits. QRouteMe is a platform for indirect, mediated, and facilitated interactions among humans during large social events, by means of a wide variety of concurrent technologies and devices. The system evolution is analyzed according to the new human-to-human interaction (HHI) research domain. In particular, we show how QRouteMe has been adapted for the different events in which it has been used. We analyze and describe social interaction aspects during the events and we discuss some data and results. Finally we outline some possible futur…
Concurrent photo sequence organization
2012
Personal photo album organization is a highly demanding domain where advanced tools are required to manage large photo collections. In contrast to many previous works, that try to solve the problem of organizing a single user photo sequence, we present a new technique to account for the concurrent photo sequence organization problem, that is the problem of organizing multiple photo sequences taken during the same event. Given a set of sequences acquired at the same place during the same temporal window by several users using different cameras, our framework is intended to capture the evolution of the event and groups photos based on temporal proximity and visual content. The method automati…
Le organizzazioni internazionali europee fra promozione dei diritti umani e diritto umanitario
2020
This essay aims at critically summarizing the role played by the European Union and the Council of Europe with regard to both the promotion of human rights and humanitarian law following the second world war (para. 2 and 3). The idea is submitted that such a role is currently far from being so active as it was until the end of the '90. A similar conclusion stems from the fact that both the recent case law of the European Court and the recent case law of the Court of Justice (as well as the practice concerning the external relations of the EU in the field of migrations) display a clear tendency not to contribute to the development of the international or the european legal regime of human ri…
Ancora sulle "esplosive palatali" nelle inchieste dell'Atlante Linguistico del Mediterraneo (ALM): i punti albanesi
2021
The Italian Validation of Singelis’s Self-Construal Scale (SCS): a Short 10-Item Version Shows Improved Psychometric Properties
2015
This study validates an Italian version of Singelis’s Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Scale (SCS; Singelis in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, 20, 580–591, 1994; Singelis et al. in Cross-Cultural Research, 29, 240–275, 1995), a scale intended to measure individuals' feelings of connectedness to and separateness from social situations. Results of the Italian validation, carried out through three studies involved a total of 803 Italian university students, has led to a short 10-item version, with two 5-item orthogonal factors respectively reflecting independent self-construal and interdependent self-construal. The new short version of Singelis’s scale, as examined thr…
Use of noninvasive cerebral stimulation techniques in aphasia: An updating
2012
Aphasia is a receptive and expressive communication disorder following to a cerebral accident (stroke, head injury, tumor). ical speech and language therapy was not able to significantly contribute to the aphasia recovery. In the last decade two nonin- vasive cerebral techniques, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), have been used for the treatment of aphasic patients. In this paper I will report some of the main results in this field. The aim is to highlight both coherent and contrasting outcomes emerging from the use of these techniques and to understand their therapeutic potential in the treatment of aphasia.
Louseborne relapsing fever in young migrants, sicily, Italy, july-september 2015
2016
To the Editor: During the early 20th century, at the end of World War I, and during World War II, louseborne relapsing fever (LBRF) caused by Borrelia recurrentis was a major public health problem, especially in eastern Europe and northern Africa (1,2). Currently, poor living conditions, famine, war, and refugee camps are major risk factors for epidemics of LBRF in resource-poor countries, such as those in the Horn of Africa (3,4). Increased migration from resource-poor countries and war/violence create new routes for spread of vectorborne diseases. Recently, several cases of LBRF have been reported among asylum seekers from Eritrea in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany (5–8). All of…

Reoperation for persistent or recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism
2017
Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common acquired disorder seen in chronic renal failure. Its pathophysiology is mainly due to hyperphosphatemia and vitamin D deficiency and resistance. When medical treatment fails, subtotal and total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation are the standard procedures, although both are associated with high recurrence rates. Methods and Results: 4 patients experienced persistence and 9 relapse. The first 4 were subjected to reoperation after 6 months for the persistence of symptoms due to the finding of a supernumerary adenomatous gland while the remaining patients at the reoperation showed in 5 cases 2 more glands in over thymic position, an…
