Transcranial direct current stimulation: Adverse effects and the efficacy of a commonly utilised sham protocol
2017
IntroductionTranscranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising neuromodulation method that has, for example, been used to treat depression. Nevertheless, the adverse effects of tDCS and the validity of the current standard tDCS sham protocols have received limited attention.ObjectivesTo evaluate the extent and types of tDCS adverse effects and to assess the reliability of sham stimulation as a control procedure for tDCS in a double-blind setting.AimsTo compare adverse effects between tDCS and sham stimulation groups, and to determine how well the participants and the experimenter are able to distinguish tDCS from sham stimulation.MethodsA sample of healthy volunteers received a 2…

Risk of Recurrence After a First Episode of Symptomatic Venous Thromboembolism Provoked by a Transient Risk Factor A Systematic Review
2010
Background We aimed to determine the risk of recurrence for symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) provoked by different transient risk factors. Data Sources MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Collaboration Registry of Randomized Trials databases were searched. Study Selection Prospective cohort studies and randomized trials of patients with a first episode of symptomatic VTE provoked by a transient risk factor and treated for at least 3 months were identified. Data Extraction Number of patients and recurrent VTE during the 0- to 12-month and 0- to 24-month intervals after stopping therapy, study design, and provoking risk factor characteristics were extracted. Data Synthesis Annualized recurr…
Repeated resection for recurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A retrospective German multicentre study.
2020
Background Tumour recurrence is common after resection of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). Repeated resection is a potential curative treatment, but outcomes are not well-defined thus far. The aim of this retrospective multicentre cohort study was to show the feasibility and survival of repeated resection of ICC recurrence. Methods Data were collected from 18 German hepato-pancreatico-biliary centres for patients who underwent repeated exploration of recurrent ICC between January 2008 and December 2017. Primary end points were overall (OS) and recurrence-free survival from the day of primary and repeated resection. Results Of 156 patients who underwent repeated exploration for recurre…
Current practice in regional anaesthesia in Germany
2005
Several new techniques and agents (e.g. ropivacaine) have been introduced in regional anaesthesia to improve patients outcome and safety. The beneficial effects on patient outcome are clear with these techniques, however, no information is available about their pattern and frequency of use in clinical practice. This study presents data concerning the current practice of regional anaesthesia in Germany.A questionnaire was sent to every German anaesthesia department (n = 1381). Questions focused on the frequency and range of regional anaesthetic procedures employed, with attention also to the organizational structural of the individual institution.Six hundred and sixty-seven questionnaires we…

Microsurgical Scalp Reconstruction in the Elderly
2015
BACKGROUND Microvascular reconstruction is the mainstay of treatment in complex scalp defects. The rate of elderly patients requiring scalp reconstruction is increasing, but outcomes in elderly patients are unclear. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature pertaining to free tissue transfer for scalp reconstruction in patients older than 65 years to compare outcomes among different free flaps and determine the safety profile of treatment. METHODS A systematic review of the available literature of patients undergoing microvascular scalp reconstruction was completed. Details for patients 65 years and older were extracted and reviewed for data analysis. RESULTS A t…

2017
Abstract Sanda B, Vistad I, Haakstad LAH, Berntsen S, Sagedal LR, Lohne-Seiler H, Torstveit MK. Reliability and concurrent validity of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form among pregnant women. Background The International Physical Activity Questionnaire short-form (IPAQ-SF) is frequently used to assess physical activity (PA) level in the general adult population including pregnant women. However, the reliability and validity of the questionnaire in pregnancy is unknown. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to investigate test-retest reliability and concurrent validity of IPAQ-SF among pregnant women, and whether PA is reported differently among those who fu…
Prise en charge de l’infarctus cérébral à la phase initiale
2022
Ischemic stroke accounts for 80% of overall stroke, and is one of the leading causes of death, disability and dementia in worldwide. Management of patients with acute ischemic stroke dramatically improved over time with the implementation of intensive care stroke units, the development of acute recanalization strategies, the optimization of the management of post-stroke complications, and the prevention of early stroke recurrence. The objective of this article is to provide a general overview of the current management of patients with acute ischemic stroke aiming at improving post-stroke outcome.
