Cerebral toxicity of penicillins in relation to their hydrophobic character

The neurotoxic effects of ticarcillin, methicillin, phenthicillin, oxacillin, cloxacillin and dicloxacillin were studied in the conscious rabbit. During and after intravenous administration of 1.2 and 2.4 g/kg, resp., over 50 min the blood concentrations of the drugs were determined and the neurotoxicity assessed by continuous recording of the electroencephalogram. The hydrophobia of the penicillins was characterized by determination of their partition coefficients between isobutanol and buffer solution pH 7.4. Coat darkness is associated with social dominance and mating behaviour in a mountain sheep hybrid lineage

Natural hybridization can produce novel traits when morphologically different populations hybridize, and can introduce variation in traits that become associated with sexual selection. Evidence from breeding experiments and genetic markers indicate that the great variation in coat darkness and the unique coat patterns found in Stone's sheep Ovis dalli stonei, populations, have resulted from an ancient hybridization event between thinhorn sheep, O. dalli, and bighorn sheep, O. canadensis. Evidence for cryptic glacial refugia from North American mountain sheep mitochondrial DNA

The separation of populations by ice sheets into large refugia can account for much of the genetic diversity found in present day populations. The evolutionary implications of small glacial refugia have not been as thoroughly explored. To examine refugial origins of North American mountain sheep Ovis spp., we analyzed a 604 bp portion of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region from 223 O. dalli and O. canadensis. Major refugia were identified in eastern Beringia and southern North America, and we found evidence for two smaller refugia situated between the Laurentide and Cordilleran glaciers. Tässä Pro gradu –tutkielmassa käsitellään elohopean määritystä eläinkudoksesta kemiallinen höyryn muodostus induktiivisesti kytketty plasma optinen emissio spektrometria –menetelmällä (CVG-ICP-OES) ja siihen liittyvää näytteenkäsittelyä. Tutkimuksen kirjallisessa osassa käydään läpi muun muassa eri näytteenliuotusmenetelmiä, analyysimenetelmiä, tutkittavien metallien pelkistämistä CVG-ICP-OES –analyysiä varten ja CVG-ICP-OES –analyysissä esiintyviä häiriöitä. Tämän Pro gradu -tutkielman kirjallisessa osassa käsitellään monipuolisesti elohopeaa ja seleeniä käyden läpi muun muassa niiden ominaisuuksia ja käyttökohteita, niiden vaikutusta terveyteen, sekä määriä ravinnossa ja muissa lähteissä. Tämän lisäksi kirjoitelmassa käsitellään näytteenkäsittelymenetelmistä ultraääni- ja mikroaaltohajotukset, sekä kemialliseen höyryn muodostukseen mahdollisesti tarvittu esipelkistys. Analyysimenetelmänä läpi käydään kokeellisessa osassa käytetyn induktiivisesti kytketty plasma-optinen emissiospektrometri (ICP-OES) -laitteen tekniikkaa, sekä kemiallisen höyryn muodostuksen periaatteet ja siinä käytetty laitteisto. The motivation behind our research was the rapid growth and business wins of world-class Finnish game companies, like Supercell, as well as the success of other game companies in Finland. In particular, Supercell's growth is something that has not been heard of before and this raised the interest to research what game companies have been doing right. An air-lift biofilm reactor for the production of γ-decalactones by Yarrowia lipolytica

Decalactones are interesting flavouring compounds that can be produced from ricinoleic acid. In this study, the production of lactones in biofilms using Yarrowia lipolytica is investigated. The hydrophobia of cells increased for increased aeration rates resulting in higher adhesion when the reactor wall was hydrophobic (plastic). To increase adhesion, sheets of methyl-polymethacrylate (PMMA) were added in the reactor and the production of lactones increased with the surface of plastic added, reaching 850 mg/L of 3-hydroxy-γ-decalactone for 60 cm2.
