Integration of physically based distributed hydrological model with model of carbon and nitrogen cycle: Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory, Puerto Ri…

2015

The dynamics of carbon and nitrogen cycles, increasingly influenced by human activities, are the key to the functioning of ecosystems. These cycles are influenced by the composition of the substrate, availability of nitrogen, the population of microorganisms, and by environmental factors. Therefore, land management and use, climate change, and nitrogen deposition patterns influence the dynamics of these macronutrients at the landscape scale. In this work a physically based distributed hydrological model, the tRIBS model, is coupled with a process-based multi-compartment model of the biogeochemical cycle to simulate the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen (CN) in the Mameyes River basin, Puerto …

LA LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT APPLICATA AL SETTORE AGROALIMENTARE: IL CASO STUDIO DI TRE PRODOTTI SICILIANI

2018

The use of morphokinetics as a predictor of embryo implantation.

2011

Background Time-lapse observation presents an opportunity for optimizing embryo selection based on morphological grading as well as providing novel kinetic parameters, which may further improve accurate selection of viable embryos. The objective of this retrospective study was to identify the morphokinetic parameters specific to embryos that were capable of implanting. In order to compare a large number of embryos, with minimal variation in culture conditions, we have used an automatic embryo monitoring system. Methods Using a tri-gas IVF incubator with a built-in camera designed to automatically acquire images at defined time points, we have simultaneously monitored up to 72 individual emb…

Micelles as containers for self-assembled nanodevices: a fluorescent sensor for lipophilicity

2008

Potentiometric titrations, fluorescence versus pH titrations, dynamic light scattering and fluorescence polarization anisotropy studies demonstrate that inside the nanodimensioned Triton X-100 micelles, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, PCOO-, forms an apical complex with the Zn2+ cation encircled by a lipophilic cyclen ligand and hugely increasing its fluorescence. The ability of the Zn2+-cyclen-PCOO- complex plus its micellar container to act as a fluorescent sensor to evaluate the lipophilicity of molecular species is demonstrated on the fatty acid series CH 3(CH2)xCOOH (x=0-16). At pH 7.4 a decrease in fluorescence is observed on the addition of fatty acids that is directly related to their chai…

Rapid Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Sulforhodamines Through Nucleophilic Amination of a Monobrominated Sulfoxanthene Dye

2014

A transition-metal-free method for the synthesis of N-substituted unsymmetrical sulforhodamine fluorophores from an unusual monobrominated sulfoxanthene dye and primary or secondary amines by direct SNAr-type reactions is presented. The simplicity and effectiveness of this “postamination” procedure were demonstrated through the rapid preparation of a library of multifunctional red-emitting rhodamine analogues. Some of these analogues are equipped with a reactive handle and retain the two water-solubilizing sulfonic acid moieties of the starting halogenated derivative; this makes them ideal candidates for biolabeling applications. The potential utility of this expeditious strategy to finely …

l-Valine biosynthesis during batch and fed-batch cultivations of Corynebacterium glutamicum: Relationship between changes in bacterial growth rate an…

2007

Abstract A transition in the bacterial growth rate to below maximum was found to be an optimum parameter of cellular physiology to increase the activity of acetohydroxy acid synthase, a regulatory enzyme in l -valine synthesis, and amino acid overproduction by Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 13032 recombinants under batch and fed-batch cultivation conditions. An increase in l -valine synthesis under transient situations when cellular growth rate was downregulated was correlated to a decrease in the activity of aconitase, a key enzyme in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) of C. glutamicum , and, in contrast, to an increase in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme in…

Biogeochemical Cycle of Silica in an Apolyhaline Interdunal Holocene Lake (Chad, N'Guigmi Region, Niger)

1999

During the Holocene, the apolyhaline conditions in interdunal ephemeral lakes in the Lake Chad region led to various diagenetic processes, which resulted in: (a) clay authigenesis, (b) organic matter lithification (plants and cyanobacterial mats), (c) precipitation of sodium silicate (magadiite, kenyaite, zeolite), and (d) chert neoformation. Each step in this diagenetic process involves silica, which can be highly mobile under such conditions. Therefore, the paleoenvironmental variations can be investigated using the Si cycle.http://link.springer. de/link/service/journals/00114/bibs/9086010/90860475.htm</HEA

Stable Cu isotope fractionation in soils during oxic weathering and podzolization

2011

Abstract Copper stable isotope ratios are fractionated during various biogeochemical processes and may trace the fate of Cu during long-term pedogenetic processes. We assessed the effects of oxic weathering (formation of Cambisols) and podzolization on Cu isotope ratios (δ65Cu). Two Cambisols (oxic weathered soils without strong vertical translocations of soil constituents) and two Podzols (soils showing vertical translocation of organic matter, Fe and Al) were analyzed for Cu concentrations, partitioning of Cu in seven fractions of a sequential extraction and δ65Cu values in bulk soil. Cu concentrations in the studied soils were low (1.4–27.6 μg g−1) and Cu was mainly associated with stron…

Accumulation of metals and changes in composition of freshwater lake organic sediments during the Holocene

2020

Abstract The distribution of metals in the strata of sediments deposited in the freshwater environment formed during the Holocene in the territory of Latvia has been studied rather insufficiently. Considering the large volume of accumulated organic matter in sediments, studies on the content of metallic elements in sediments can help to determine the peculiarities of the metal accumulation process in limnic systems and the biogeochemical cycling of metals. Lake Pilvelis, which is located in the eastern part of Latvia (the northern part of Europe), was selected as the main study site. Lake Pilvelis is a small lake of a glacial origin, and >90% of its depression is filled with organic-rich se…
