Maintenance of genetic diversity in cyclic populations—a longitudinal analysis in Myodes glareolus
2012
Conspicuous cyclic changes in population density characterize many populations of small northern rodents. The extreme crashes in individual number are expected to reduce the amount of genetic variation within a population during the crash phases of the population cycle. By long-term monitoring of a bank vole (Myodes glareolus) population, we show that despite the substantial and repetitive crashes in the population size, high heterozygosity is maintained throughout the population cycle. The striking population density fluctuation in fact only slightly reduced the allelic richness of the population during the crash phases. Effective population sizes of vole populations remained also relative…
The New Nino Capability Index for Dynamic Process Capability Analysis
2015
The process capability analysis is a crucial activity to evaluate if the process outcome meets the design specifications. Classically, such analysis is performed by verifying the in-control condition of the process and evaluating suitable capability indices, by assuming the process in-control steady-state condition. However, the in-control period of the process characterizes only a part of the system functioning cycle, the one with the lower defective rate. In particular, the system functioning cycle is also characterized by the out-of-control period, during which a greater defective rate is produced, and such increasing is not considered by the widely adopted capability indices. As consequ…
Evaluation of Clutch Plate Integrity with Non-Destructive Methods
2009
Abstract Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) represents an important phase in the life cycle of a product to detect defects both in service and in production. NDE techniques most commonly used to detect surface defects are visual inspection and methods based on eddy current and ultrasound. Laser and non-contact sensors have been recently used to inspect ultrasonically without contact. Components with complex geometry are usually inspected combining several NDE techniques, or simply visually where analysis and evaluation of results are performed by an operator based on specific parameters of acceptance. This last method is currently used to inspect the clutch plates since their complex geometry,…
Firm Lifecycles and External Restructuring
2011
This paper studies how firms contribute to the productivity growth of an industry over their lifecycle. We present a decomposition method that allows us to condition the components of productivity growth on the age of production units. We find evidence for a prolonged positive exit effect that mirrors market selection during the early stages of firms lifecycle. This effect is tightly related to the negative initial productivity effect of entry. We also find some evidence that productivity-enhancing reallocation of resources between firms is concentrated on the middle aged firms.
Theoretical and Empirical Description of Phases in the Proving Processes of Undergraduates
2018
International audience; In the presented study we adopt a process-oriented perspective on proving in order to gain further insights into relevant actions and typical obstacles in undergraduates' approaches to proving. The primary aim is to theoretically and empirically describe different phases, understood as bunches of intentionally closely related actions of proving. Therefore, we suggest a theoretical model of the proving process and confirm empirically that it can be used as an analytical tool for proving approaches. Based on this model, several proving processes have been analysed. In this paper we present first findings regarding the contribution of each phase to proof construction as…
Targeted synthesis of pyrrolo tricycles for selective biomolecules overexpressed in cancer cells

Aplidin® induces JNK-dependent apoptosis in human breast cancer cells via alteration of glutathione homeostasis, Rac1 GTPase activation, and MKP-1 ph…
2006
Aplidin® is an antitumor agent in phase II clinical trials that induces apoptosis through the sustained activation of Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). We report that Aplidin® alters glutathione homeostasis increasing the ratio of oxidized to reduced forms (GSSG/GSH). Aplidin® generates reactive oxygen species and disrupts the mitochondrial membrane potential. Exogenous GSH inhibits these effects and also JNK activation and cell death. We found two mechanisms by which Aplidin® activates JNK: rapid activation of Rac1 small GTPase and downregulation of MKP-1 phosphatase. Rac1 activation was diminished by GSH and enhanced by L-buthionine (SR)-sulfoximine, which inhibits GSH synthesis. Downregulatio…
Economic policy uncertainty effects for forecasting future real economic activity
2018
Recently introduced measures for Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) included in the data from 1997 - 2016 have a role in forecasting out-of-sample values for the future real economic activity for both the euro area and the UK economies. The inclusion of EPU measures, either for the US, the UK or for overall European economies, improves the forecasting ability of models based on standard financial market information, especially for the period before the 2008 global crisis. However, during and after the crisis period, the slope of the yield curve and excess stock market returns improves the out-of-sample forecast performance the most compared to an AR-benchmark model. Hence, the EPU informatio…
