Behavioural adaptations of argulid parasites (Crustacea: Branchiura) to major challenges in their life cycle.

2015

Fish lice (Argulus spp.) are obligate ectoparasites, which contrary to most aquatic parasites, retain the ability to swim freely throughout the whole of their life. In fish farms, they can quickly increase in numbers and without effective control cause argulosis, which results in the reduced growth and survival of their fish hosts. The morphology of Argulus spp, including their sensory organs, is suitable for both parasitism and free-swimming. By spending a considerable amount of time away from their host, these parasites risk being excessively dispersed, which could endanger mating success. Here we present a review of recent studies on the behaviour of Argulus spp, especially the aggregati…

Urea Cycle Metabolites and Atrial Fibrillation or Heart Failure Risk: Two Case-Control Studies in the PREDIMED Trial

2021

OBJECTIVES: To prospectively analyze the associations between urea cycle metabolites and incident atrial fibrillation (AF) or heart failure (HF), and to evaluate the effect of a Mediterranean diet (MD) intervention on such associations. METHODS: We designed two nested case-control studies within the PREDIMED trial, a randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the effect of two MD interventions, supplemented with either extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) or nuts, on cardiovascular disease (CVD). Fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and urea cycle metabolites (arginine, citrulline, and ornithine) and methylarginines (asymmetric dimethylarginine/symmetric dimethylarginine ratio (ADMA…

Age-related muscle activation profiles and joint stiffness regulation in repetitive hopping

2011

It is well documented that increasing effort during exercise is characterized by an increase in electromyographic activity of the relevant muscles. How aging influences this relationship is a matter of great interest. In the present study, nine young and 24 elderly subjects did repetitive hopping with maximal effort as well as with 50%, 65%, 75% and 90% intensities. During hopping joint kinematics were measured together with electromyographic activity (EMG) from the soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis and tibialis anterior muscles. The results showed that agonist activation increased in both age groups with increasing intensity. The highest jumping efficiency (EMG ratio …

Concomitant gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist and menotropin treatment for the synchronized induction of multiple follicles.

1988

In an effort to overcome possible interference by endogenous gonadotropin-ovarian hormone dynamics, desensitization of the pituitary gonadotropins by a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) was achieved in 12 women with repeatedly failed attempts at multiple follicular stimulation. Eight women were scheduled for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer (ET), and 4 for gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT). Stimulation failure was characterized by premature luteinization, poor estradiol (E2) response, or inadequate follicular growth. The agonist was administered by nasal spray 500 to 600 micrograms/day beginning on days 21 to 23 of the menstrual cycle. A rapid desensitizatio…

5-HT3 receptor-channels coupled with Na+ influx in human T cells: role in T cell activation.

1999

The study was conducted on a human (Jurkat) T cell line, loaded with a Na+ fluorescent probe, SBFI/AM. Serotonin and an agonist of 5-HT3 receptor-channels, 2-methyl-5HT, evoked Na+ influx, whereas the agonists of other serotonergic receptor subtypes, i.e., 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors, failed to induce Na+ influx in these cells. By using 3H-BRL43694, an agonist of 5-HT3 receptor-channels, we characterized 5-HT3 lymphocyte receptors which exhibited a density (Bmax) of 300 +/- 20 fmol/10(6) cells and a Kd of 30 nM in Jurkat T cells. The T-cell 5-HT3 receptor-channel is not regulated either by the protein kinase C or by the free intracellular calcium concentrations as the agents known to activa…

Sectoral Business Cycle Synchronization in the European Union

2007

This paper analyses sectoral business cycle synchronization in an enlarged European Union using annual data for the period 1980-2005. In particular, we try to identify which sector for each country is driving the aggregate output business cycle synchronization. Overall, the sectors that provide the most relevant contribution are Industry, Building and Construction, and Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry. In contrast, the Services sector, the largest one in terms of valued added share, shows a relative low business cycle synchronization and volatility, implying that it contributes only marginally to the aggregate output business cycle synchronization.

On many-sorted algebraic closure operators

2004

A theorem of Birkhoff-Frink asserts that every algebraic closure operator on an ordinary set arises, from some algebraic structure on the set, as the corresponding generated subalgebra operator. However, for many-sorted sets, i.e., indexed families of sets, such a theorem is not longer true without qualification. We characterize the corresponding many-sorted closure operators as precisely the uniform algebraic operators. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

ON AUTOMORPHISMS OF GENERALIZED ALGEBRAIC-GEOMETRY CODES.

2007

Abstract We consider a class of generalized algebraic-geometry codes based on places of the same degree of a fixed algebraic function field over a finite field F / F q . We study automorphisms of such codes which are associated with automorphisms of F / F q .
