Diversity of Fish Scales in Late Triassic deposits of Krasiejów (SW Poland)

2018

Abstract. Taxonomy of extinct fishes is mostly based on the shapes of their bodies, teeth and skeletons and sometimes the coverage of the body. Analysis of modern fishes shows that sometimes even single-scale morphology can also be used as a taxonomic tool. In spite of the fact that variation in scales character in one species can be broad, some specific features distinguish species of the same genus. Analysis of the fossilized scales of fishes found in the Late Triassic deposits of Krasiejow (SW Poland) shows that the microstructure of the external surface of scales can also be considered as a taxonomic tool in the fossil record. Description of the ornamentation pattern of several scales o…

Determining efficiency of cycloid reducers using different calculation methods

2019

Cycloid reducers are gear trains which can be classified as planetary transmissions. These transmissions have a very wide range of uses in industry in transporters, robots, satellites, etc. This research presents a comparative analysis of three analytical methods for determining cycloid drive efficiency. The paper explores every mathematically formulated method and compares them to experimental results from literature. The presented methods for determining efficiency have a common property, in that they all determine losses due to friction on the bearing cam surface of the shaft, the rollers of the central gear and the output rollers. The calculation of efficiency values is done for standar…

The influence of the cycloid disc bearing type on the cycloidal speed reducer efficiency

2021

The robotics industry has experienced a rapid expansion in the last decade. As a result, the market of speed reducers with high gear ratios, high precision and a compact design is growing rapidly. In addition to these characteristics, it is very important for gear trains to have high efficiency. Because of their compact design, cycloidal speed reducers are not exposed to axial forces, which is their important characteristic. This means that radial bearings can be used in their supports. The bearing type has significant effects not only on the design and dimensions of the cycloid speed reducer but also on its efficiency. In this paper, an analysis of power losses for different types of rolli…

The unique pseudanthium of Actinodium (Myrtaceae) - morphological reinvestigation and possible regulation by CYCLOIDEA-like genes

2013

Background Genes encoding TCP transcription factors, such as CYCLOIDEA-like (CYC-like) genes, are well known actors in the control of plant morphological development, particularly regarding the control of floral symmetry. Despite recent understanding that these genes play a role in establishing the architecture of inflorescences in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), where hundreds of finely organized flowers are arranged to mimic an individual flower, little is known about their function in the development of flower-like inflorescences across diverse phylogenetic groups. Here, we studied the head-like pseudanthium of the Australian swamp daisy Actinodium cunninghamii Schau. (Myrtaceae, the …

A continuing debate in elementary geometry: the Simson–Wallace line and its many generalisations

2016

For some years now the importance has been appraised of demonstrating elementary geometry to pupils and future teachers through interactive geometry software. This fits within a view of the teaching of geometry that stresses a hands-on approach, thanks to which it is possible to teach the subject via historical syllabi, touching on ideas from different origins and of a transversal nature. The debate about the role of elementary geometry in the last 30 years is connected to this, with contributions by scholars such as Yaglom, Scimemi and Betti. In the perspective of following a sequence of elementary geometry constructions historically connected with each other, we suggest a path that analys…

From art to geometry: Aesthetic and beauty in the learning process

2015

Starting from the concept that knowledge comes as element of mediation between the convergent thinking, founded on experience, and the divergent thinking, placed in the perceptive, intuitive, creative dimension, in this paper we want to present an idea for developing an educational path combining the concept of “beauty” and some historical notes. It is possible to use this dissertation as a starting point to conceive a geometric laboratory that drawing inspiration from artistic works, get to create geometric shapes provided with fascinating symmetries
