Aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible : case presentation and review of the literature

2007

The aneurysmatic osseus cyst is a very infrequent bone lesion which in some occasions can be found at the craneofacial skeleton. Among all the cystic lesions that can be found at the mandible or the maxilla it is very rare. On the other side it is at the same time very interesting in terms of its differential diagnose with other types of maxillary bone lesions We present the case of a Caucasian male with an aneurysmatic cyst located at the right angle of the mandible and a review of the literature concerning the case. We have focused on the differential diagnose, mainly with the malignancies that can be found at this location. We also comment the therapeutic options clasically described for…

Robust Automated Assessment of Human Blastocyst Quality using Deep Learning

2018

AbstractMorphology assessment has become the standard method for evaluation of embryo quality and selecting human blastocysts for transfer inin vitro fertilization(IVF). This process is highly subjective for some embryos and thus prone to human bias. As a result, morphological assessment results may vary extensively between embryologists and in some cases may fail to accurately predict embryo implantation and live birth potential. Here we postulated that an artificial intelligence (AI) approach trained on thousands of embryos can reliably predict embryo quality without human intervention. To test this hypothesis, we implemented an AI approach based on deep neural networks (DNNs). Our approac…

Osmotic and cryoprotective effects of a mixture of DMSO and ethylene glycol on rabbit morulae.

1993

Abstract Comparisons were made of the osmotic and cryoprotective effects on rabbit embryos preserved by vitrification with 2 solutions and by conventional freezing. Embryos obtained from rabbits killed 70 to 72 h after mating were used in the study (n = 948). Initially, toxicity of the 3 cryoprotectants was studied in fresh (unfrozen) embryos (n = 135). Subsequently, embryos placed in ethylene glycol (EG, 40% v/v; n = 88) and ethylene glycol with dimethyl sulfoxide (EG+DMSO, 20% v/v each, respectively; n = 344) were loaded into straws and plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. Embryos placed in 1.5 M DMSO and 20% heat inactivated rabbit serum were subjected to conventional freezing in a pro…

Beneficial Effect of Two Culture Systems with Small Groups of Embryos on the Development and Quality of In Vitro-Produced Bovine Embryos

2014

Summary Currently, in vitro-produced embryos derived by ovum pick up (OPU) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) technologies represent approximately one-third of the embryos worldwide in cattle. Nevertheless, the culture of small groups of embryos from an individual egg donor is an issue that OPU-IVF laboratories have to face. In this work, we tested whether the development and quality of the preimplantation embryos in vitro cultured in low numbers (five embryos) could be improved by the addition of epidermal growth factor, insulin, transferrin and selenium (EGF-ITS) or by the WOW system. With this aim, immature oocytes recovered from slaughtered heifers were in vitro matured and in vitro ferti…

Deep learning enables robust assessment and selection of human blastocysts after in vitro fertilization

2019

AbstractVisual morphology assessment is routinely used for evaluating of embryo quality and selecting human blastocysts for transfer after in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, the assessment produces different results between embryologists and as a result, the success rate of IVF remains low. To overcome uncertainties in embryo quality, multiple embryos are often implanted resulting in undesired multiple pregnancies and complications. Unlike in other imaging fields, human embryology and IVF have not yet leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) for unbiased, automated embryo assessment. We postulated that an AI approach trained on thousands of embryos can reliably predict embryo quality with…

Dipeptides of S-Substituted Dehydrocysteine as Artzyme Building Blocks: Synthesis, Complexing Abilities and Antiproliferative Properties †

2021

Background: Dehydropeptides are analogs of peptides containing at least one conjugate double bond between α,β-carbon atoms. Its presence provides unique structural properties and reaction centre for chemical modification. In this study, the series of new class of dipeptides containing S-substituted dehydrocysteine with variety of heterocyclic moieties was prepared. The compounds were designed as the building blocks for the construction of artificial metalloenzymes (artzymes). Therefore, the complexing properties of representative compounds were also evaluated. Furthermore, the acknowledged biological activity of natural dehydropeptides was the reason to extend the study for antiproliferativ…

Apoptosis and cell cycle aberrations in epithelial odontogenic lesions : an evidence by the expression of p53, Bcl-2 and Bax

2017

Background Ameloblastoma (AMB), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) are epithelial odontogenic lesions with diverse biologic profiles. Defects in regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle may be involved in the development and progression of those lesions, therefore we aimed to investigate the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and p53 to better understand the possible role of these proteins in AMBs, OKCs and AOTs. Material and Methods The studied sample consisted of 20 AMBs, 20 OKCs and 20 AOTs. Immunohistochemistry technique was performed for the antibodies p53, Bcl-2 and Bax. Immunoreactivity was observed in the epithelial component and positive cells were counted in …

Gnotobiotische untersuchungen an SPF-Mäusen im rahmen einer studie zur tumorentwicklung im kolon nach cholezystektomie

1985

Summary The relation between cholecystectomy and colon carcinogenesis has not been fully elucidated. As bacteria may be involved in the carcinogenic process, we investigated the effect of cholecystectomy and dimethylhydrazine (DMH) administration to SPF NMRI mice with regard to tumour genesis and bacterial colonisation of the intestine. It results from this study that cholecystectomy does not influence tumour genesis and that 6–7 months post operationem and DMH administration tumours and bacteria originally not found in the animals develop: Clostridia, eubacteria spec, which cannot be differentiated and E. lentum. Theses changes appear in group II of mice (laparotomy and DMH) and group III …

The community of Cystoseira brachycarpa J. Agardh emend. Giaccone (Fucales, Phaeophyceae) in a shallow hydrothermal vent area of the Aeolian Islands …

2014

A Cystoseira brachycarpa community from a vent area off Panarea Island (Italy) was investigated in two sites at different pH values. At low pH, species richness and coverage were low and the community displayed a reduced reproductive capacity. Conversely, at normal pH, dense canopies of fertile C. brachycarpa were found.

Fern-dominated Rock Plant Communities of Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2015

The results of phytosociological research conducted on the fern vegetation of rock crevices and clefts of the Pamir-Alai Mountains in Tajikistan are presented. During field surveys done in 2010–2013, 78 phytosociological relevés were sampled. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. A synopsis of the fern communities of the montane and high altitude zones in Tajikistan is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots, species of 9 ferns, 58 angiosperms and 13 mosses were recorded. The most frequent ferns were: Cystopteris fragilis, Cheilanthes persica, Asplenium ruta-muraria, Asplenium ceterach, Adiantum capillus-veneris and Cryptogramma stelleri. Six …
