CT Angiography at 24 Months Demonstrates Durability of EVAR With the Use of Chimney Grafts for Pararenal Aortic Pathologies

2013

PURPOSE: To present the 24-month radiological follow-up data for patients with pararenal aortic pathologies treated with chimney and periscope grafts during endovascular repair. METHODS: Between January 2008 and December 2011, 124 high-risk patients with complex pararenal aortic pathologies were treated using the chimney technique at 2 European vascular and cardiovascular centers with advanced experience of the described technique. In particular, 50 patients were treated at Site 1 and 74 at Site 2. Forty (32.2%) patients (32 men; mean age 79.2±4.9 years) completed computed tomographic angiography follow-up at 24 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The overall technical success was 100%, and th…

Oral dabigatran versus enoxaparin for thromboprophylaxis after primary total hip arthroplasty (RE-NOVATE II)

2010

SummaryThis trial compared the efficacy and safety of oral dabigatran, a direct thrombin inhibitor, versus subcutaneous enoxaparin for extended thromboprophylaxis in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. A total of 2,055 patients were randomised to 28–35 days treatment with oral dabigatran, 220 mg once-daily, starting with a half-dose 1–4 hours after surgery, or subcutaneous enoxaparin 40 mg once-daily, starting the evening before surgery. The primary efficacy outcome was a composite of total venous thromboembolism [VTE] (venographic or symptomatic) and death from all-causes. The main secondary composite outcome was major VTE (proximal deep-vein thrombosis or non-fatal pulmonary embol…

Antagonizing dabigatran by idarucizumab in cases of ischemic stroke or intracranial hemorrhage in Germany - A national case collection.

2017

BackgroundIdarucizumab is a monoclonal antibody fragment with high affinity for dabigatran that reverses its anticoagulant effects within minutes. It may exhibit the potential for patients under dabigatran therapy suffering ischemic stroke to regain eligibility for thrombolysis with rt-PA and may inhibit lesion growth in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage on dabigatran.AimsTo provide insights into the clinical use of idarucizumab in patients under effective dabigatran anticoagulation presenting with signs of ischemic stroke or intracranial hemorrhage.MethodsRetrospective data collected from German neurological/neurosurgical departments administering idarucizumab following product launch…

Global age-sex-specific fertility, mortality, healthy life expectancy (HALE), and population estimates in 204 countries and territories, 1950–2019: a…

2020

Background Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Methods 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Marine data collection and transmission system for ECO-boat

2014

Masteroppgave i Informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi IKT590 Universitetet i Agder 2014 Marine data collection is of great importance because the analytical results based onthe collected data can be utilized for many purposes during the design phase beforesale as well as the maintenance phase of the boat after sale. In this thesis, I havedesigned and implemented a marine data collection and transmission system foryachts. The system can collect data from an NMEA network, a wireless sensornetwork, a custom-made CAN-bus network, and other sensors such as a 9degree-of-freedom inertial measurement units. The collected data is stored both atthe boat and at a remote server. In this design, I us…

CLINICAL OUTCOMES OF SELF-EXPAMDABLE METALLIC STENTS IN PALLIATION OF MALIGNANT ANASTOMOTIC STRICTURES: A SINGLE CENTER EXPERIENCE

2015

Background: self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS) are employed as the preferred non surgical palliative treatment for gastric outlet obstruction due to malignancies. Metallic stents are often employed to treat malignant anastomotic obstructions after surgicsl interventions as esophagojejunostomy, gastrojejunostomy and esophagogastrojejunostomy. Methods: this case series reports prospectively the clinical outcomes of SEMS in the palliative care of malignant anastomotic strictures caused by the recurrence gastric cancer follwing gastric surgery as oncological curative treatment, in a series of nine consecutive patients, treated between January 2009 and december 2012 in our center. Results: N…

Physical properties of green composites based on poly-lactic acid or Mater-Bi® filled with Posidonia Oceanica leaves

2018

Abstract This work focuses on the evaluation of Posidonia Oceanica leaves as effective reinforcing agent for ecofriendly, fully biodegradable polymer composites. Posidonia leaves were washed, ground and sieved in order to achieve two different size distributions and aspect ratios. They were then added to either a stiff or a ductile biodegradable polymer matrix, respectively poly-lactic acid (PLA) and MaterBi® (MB), at two different filler contents (10 wt% and 20 wt%). The materials were fully characterized from a spectroscopic, morphological, rheological, and mechanical point of view. In particular, the outcomes of tensile tests were statistically analyzed by using a Full Factorial Design i…

Degradable poly(amidoamine) hydrogels as scaffolds for in vitro culturing of peripheral nervous system cells.

2012

This paper reports on the synthesis and physico-chemical, mechanical, and biological characterization of two sets of poly(amidoamine) (PAA) hydrogels with potential as scaffolds for in vivo peripheral nerve regeneration. They are obtained by polyaddition of piperazine with N,N′-methylenebis(acrylamide) or 1,4-bis(acryloyl)piperazine with 1,2-diaminoethane as cross-linking agent and exhibit a combination of relevant properties, such as mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability, ability to induce adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells (SCs) preserving their viability. Moreover, the most promising hydrogels, that is those deriving from 1,4-bis(acryloyl)piperazine, allow the …

Influence of polymer content in Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite–polycaprolactone nanocomposites on the formation of microvessel-like structures

2009

Calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics are widely used in bone tissue engineering due to their good osteoconductivity. The mechanical properties of CaP can be modified by the addition of small volume fractions of biodegradable polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL). Nevertheless, it is also important to evaluate how the polymer content influences cell-material or cell-cell interactions because of potential consequences for bone regeneration and vascularization. In this study we assessed the general biocompatibilty of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA)-PCL disks containing nominally 11 and 24% polycaprolactone using human umbilical vein endothelial cells and human primary osteoblasts. Confocal mi…
