The anti-oxidant capacity of tumour glycolysis.
2009
In this mini-review data are summarised which provide evidence for the biological and clinical significance of tumour glycolysis and of its relationship to the redox state of cancer cells.Malignant transformation is associated with an overexpression of numerous glycolysis-related genes in the vast majority of human cancers. At the same time, glycolytic activity and glycolysis-linked metabolic milieu are often variable between individual tumours which induces large variations in treatment response and aggressiveness. Currently, there is no genetic or proteomic marker for the prediction of the therapeutic response for individual tumours, but the prognostic value of tumour lactate accumulation…
Nanoprobing the acidification process during intracellular uptake and trafficking
2015
Abstract Many nanoparticular drug delivery approaches rely on a detailed knowledge of the acidification process during intracellular trafficking of endocytosed nanoparticles (NPs). Therefore we produced a nanoparticular pH sensor composed of the fluorescent pH-sensitive dual wavelength dye carboxy seminaphthorhodafluor-1 (carboxy SNARF-1) coupled to the surface of amino-functionalized polystyrene NPs (SNARF-1-NP). By applying a calibration fit function to confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images, local pH values were determined. The acidification and ripening process of endo/lysosomal compartments containing nanoparticles was followed over time and was found to progress up to 6h to …
Radiation-engineered functionalized nanogels as platform for biomedical nanocarriers and bio-hybrid, hierarchically assembled nanostructures
2011
Radiation technologies can be considered as choice methodologies for the creation of new functional materials at the nanoscale, the challenge being now the integration of these and other novel nanomaterials into new materials and products. The possibility of generating nanoscalar PVP-based hydrogels particles, with reactive functional groups for subsequent bioconjugation, using industrial type accelerators has been demonstrated. These functional nanoparticles are under evaluation as nanocarriers for targeted release of drugs, but can also be considered as useful building blocks for the assembly of nanostructured materials with controlled architecture. In particular, molecular recognition st…
Retrograde transport of sodium selenite and intracellular injection of micro-ruby: a combined method to describe the morphology of zinc-rich neurones.
2003
Abstract Zinc is found in synaptic vesicles in a large number of glutamatergic systems. Its involvement in neurotransmission and neurological disorders has been suggested. There are methods for tracing these circuits, but they do not fill the dendritic tree. In this study, extracellular selenite injections in vivo were combined with intracellular injection of fluorochromes in fixed tissue to reveal the morphology of these zinc-rich neurones. Intraperitoneal and intracerebral injections of sodium selenite alone or intracerebral injections of selenite combined with bisbenzimide were made in the visual cortex of the rat in order to locate the somata of zinc-rich neurones. After 24 h of retrogr…

Study of the Curing Process of DGEBA Epoxy Resin Through Structural Investigation
2015
In this work, a multi-scale approach with different analytical methods is applied to study the curing process and the structural properties of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resin. This monomer, thermally cured using 4,4′-diaminodiphenilsulfone (DDS) as hardener, is analyzed after 10, 45, 90, and 120 min of reaction time at 180 °C to obtain information on samples with different cross-linking densities. Samples are also characterized after extraction in acetone in order to obtain structural information on the insoluble parts. For this purpose, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR),…

On the representations in GF(3)^4 of the Hadamard design H_11
2020
In this paper we study the representations of the 2-(11,5,2) Hadamard design H_11 = (P,B) as a set of eleven points in the 4-dimensional vector space GF(3)^4, under the conditions that the five points in each block sum up to zero, and dim ‹P› = 4. We show that, up to linear automorphism, there exist precisely two distinct, linearly nonisomorphic representations, and, in either case, we characterize the family S of all the 5-subsets of P whose elements sum up to zero. In both cases, S properly contains the family of blocks B, thereby showing that a previous result on the representations of H_11 in GF(3)^5 cannot be improved.
Acute activation of cannabinoid receptors by anandamide reduces gastrointestinal motility and improves postprandial glycemia in mice.
2015
International audience; The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is associated with an alteration of glucose homeostasis dependent on cannabinoid receptor-1 (CB1R) activation. However, very little information is available concerning the consequences of ECS activation on intestinal glucose absorption. Mice were injected intraperitoneally with anandamide, an endocannabinoid binding both CB1R and CB2R. We measured plasma glucose and xylose appearance after oral loading, gastrointestinal motility, and glucose transepithelial transport using the everted sac method. Anandamide improved hyperglycemia after oral glucose charge whereas glucose clearance and insulin sensitivity were impaired, pointing out so…
Protective action of 1,3-butanediol in cerebral ischemia. A neurologic, histologic, and metabolic study.
1987
1,3-Butanediol (BD) is converted in the body to β-hydroxybutyrate, and previous studies have shown that hyperketonemia had beneficial effects in experimental models of generalized hypoxia. The aim of this study was to determine if BD would reduce brain damage following cerebral ischemia. A transient forebrain ischemia of 30-min duration was induced by the four-vessel occlusion technique in control and BD-treated rats (25 mmol/kg, i.p.; 30 min prior to ischemia). BD treatment led to significant improvement of neurologic deficit during the 72-h recovery period and reduced neuronal damage in the striatum and cortex but not in the CA1 sector of the hippocampus. Evaluation of cerebral energy me…
