On relation between J-integral and heat energy dissipation at the crack tip in stainless steel specimens

2019

In this paper, an experimental procedure to evaluate the elastic-plastic J-integral at the tip of a fatigue crack is presented. According to this new approach, the elastic component of the J-integral is derived from Thermoelastic Stress Analysis, while the plastic component of the J-integral is derived from the heat energy loss. An analytical link is proposed to apply this new experimental technique. Therefore, the elastic-plastic J-integral range was evaluated starting from infrared temperature maps measured in situ during crack propagation tests of AISI 304L stainless steel specimens. It was found that the range of the infrared thermography-based J-integral correlated well the crack growt…

Response spectrum analysis of frame structures: reliability-based comparison between complete quadratic combination and damping-adjusted combination

2019

In the framework of seismic design of structures, response spectrum analysis (RSA) is the most commonly used approach in practice. The most popular combination rule is the complete quadratic combination (CQC) which is also prescribed by the most of seismic design codes and is based on the assumptions that the seismic acceleration is a white noise process and the peak factor ratios associated to the total and modal responses are unitary. Recently, the damping adjusted combination (DAC) rule has been developed for base-isolated structures to overcome the aforementioned simplified assumptions. Although it has been proved that the simplifications about peak factors lead to noticeable errors in …

This paper deals with stability of solution for a one-dimensional model of Rao?Nakra sandwich beam with Kelvin?Voigt damping and time delay given by ??1?1?????? ? ??1?1?????? ? ??(??? + ?? + ??????) ? ?????????? ? ??????????( ? , ?? ? ??) = 0, ??3?3?????? ? ??3?3?????? + ??(??? + ?? + ??????) ? ?????????? = 0, ????????? + ?????????????? ? ????(??? + ?? + ??????)?? ? ?????????? = 0. A sandwich beam is an engineering model that consists of three layers: two stiff outer layers, bottom and top faces, and a more compliant inner layer called ?core layer?. Rao?Nakra system consists of three layers and the assumption is that there is no slip at the interface between contacts. The top and bottom lay…

Simultaneous laser generation and laser ultrasonic detection of the mechanical breakdown of a coating–substrate interface

2001

Abstract The present study deals with information that could be obtained by real-time contactless monitoring of the normal displacement, due to the propagation of the longitudinal waves generated by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation, through a transparent and porous ceramic coating deposited on a metallic substrate. These displacements were recorded in real-time at the rear surface of the specimens using a laser heterodyne interferometer and were correlated with the different steps of laser/material interaction (thermoelastic interactions, fracture of the coating–substrate interface and coating expulsion). An analytical model was developed to establish a relation between the longitudinal …

Infrared Thermography assisted evaluation of static and fatigue Mode II fracture toughness in FRP composites

2019

Abstract The work proposes the combined use of a Modified Transverse Crack Tension (MTCT) test coupon and Infrared Thermography, to evaluate the static and fatigue behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Polymer composites under Mode II delamination. Artificial delaminations starters are added to the TCT coupon, whose effects on the Strain Energy Release Rate are discussed. Infrared Thermography and Thermoelastic Stress Analysis are implemented to investigate stresses and delaminations growths on two FRP materials: a pre-preg IM7/8552 carbon fibre-epoxy and a glass-fibre reinforced epoxy laminates. The thermographic, thermoelastic and second harmonic signals have been obtained and used to monitor the…

Thermoelastic Stress Analysis of modified Transverse Cut Tensile composite specimens under pure Mode II fatigue delamination

2018

The present work investigates the behaviour of a Transvers Crack Tensile (TCT) specimen undergoing fatigue loading, by means of a Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) experimental setup. The TCT is a tensile composite specimen where a number of internal layers are cut through the beam width. The presence of such transverse notch favours the formation of interlaminar Mode II delaminations, starting from the notch tips and propagating between the cut and continuous plies. In this work, a modification is adopted to the classic TCT specimen, where insert films, mimicking artificial delaminations, are laid across the notch tips. This is done with the purpose to favour a pure Mode II and a symmetr…

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and chiral magnetic textures in a ferrimagnetic insulator

2019

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in multilayers of heavy metal and ferromagnetic metals enables the stabilization of novel chiral spin structures such as skyrmions. Magnetic insulators, on the other hand can exhibit enhanced dynamics and properties such as lower magnetic damping and therefore it is of interest to combine the properties enabled by interfacial DMI with insulating systems. Here, we demonstrate the presence of interfacial DMI in heterostructures that include insulating magnetic layers. We use a bilayer of perpendicularly magnetized insulating thulium iron garnet (TmIG) and the heavy metal platinum, and find a surprisingly strong interfacial DMI that, comb…

Experimental analysis of acoustical properties of irregular cavities using laser refracto-vibrometry

2018

International audience; In this paper, the Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV) is used to measure acoustic pressure in small regions of cavities for the study of acoustical localization. It is shown that this optical method leads to interesting information on localized acoustical modes inside irregular cavities, which are very difficult to observe using conventional microphone measurements. Indeed, localization regions are often of comparable size or even smaller than a typical microphone which can make this type of sensor intrusive. The SLDV is used to measure sound pressure after deriving the refracto-vibrometry method from its standard use. Data are obtained in a large area with a h…

Quantification of Plasma Sprayed Coating Adhesion Using Pulsed Laser Induced Decohesion Technique

2001

Abstract The aim of the present study is to compare a laser ultrasonic technique with a conventional indentation test for the determination of intrinsic properties and the adhesion of alumina coatings, of different thicknesses (30–350 µm), deposited on stainless steel substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). For this purpose, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to irradiate the coated specimens, and the ultrasonic waves generated by the laser are recorded at the epicenter using a laser interferometer. In the thermoelastic regime, the good agreement between the experiment and computation allows determination of the longitudinal wave velocity as well as the Young's modulus of the oxide coat…

Infrared thermography-based evaluation of the elastic-plastic J-integral to correlate fatigue crack growth data of a stainless steel

2019

Abstract The elastic-plastic J-integral is adopted to correlate fatigue crack growth data of ductile metals. An analytical link is known to exist between the J-integral and the strain energy density averaged in a control volume embracing the crack tip. On the other hand, the strain energy fluctuation is the source of temperature variations close to a fatigue crack tip of a metal material; hence the possibility to measure the J-integral from infrared thermographic scanning at the crack tip is envisaged and it is the focus of this paper. It is proposed that the elastic component of the J-integral is derived from a thermoelastic stress analysis, while the plastic component of the J-integral is…
