A methodology for the rapid characterization of Mode II delamination fatigue threshold in FRP composites

2019

Abstract A new methodology to measure the Mode II interlaminar fracture in fatigue for FRP composites is developed. The proposed methodology uses a Modified Transvers Crack Tensile (MTCT) specimen and is able to characterize the near threshold behavior in a robust, easier and significantly faster way than standard procedures. Analytical formulae, able to link the crack growth rate to the load or strain amplitudes, were found and verified, and their importance was explained, in particular, for what concerns the characterisation of the near threshold behavior. Experiments were performed both in load and strain control, while the delamination growth was monitored using different techniques inc…

A perpendicular graphene/ferromagnet electrode for spintronics

2020

We report on the large-scale integration of graphene layers over a FePd perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) platform, targeting further downscaling of spin circuits. An L10 FePd ordered alloy showing both high magneto-crystalline anisotropy and a low magnetic damping constant, is deposited by magnetron sputtering. The graphene layer is then grown on top of it by large-scale chemical vapor deposition. A step-by-step study, including structural and magnetic analyses by x-ray diffraction and Kerr microscopy, shows that the measured FePd properties are preserved after the graphene deposition process. This scheme provides a graphene protected perpendicular spin electrode showing resistance t…

Investigation of the crack tip stress field in a stainless steel SENT specimen by means of Thermoelastic Stress Analysis

2019

Abstract In this work a Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) setup is implemented to investigates the Thermoelastic and Second Harmonic signals on a fatigue loaded Single Edge Notched Tension (SENT) specimen made of stainless steel AISI 304L. Three load ratios are in particular applied, R=-1, 0, 0.1. The thermoelastic signal is used to evaluate the Stress Intensity Factor via two approaches, the Stanley-Chan linear interpolation method and the over-deterministic least-square fitting (LSF) method using the Williams’ series expansion. Regarding least-square fitting, an iterative procedure is proposed to identify the optimal crack tip position in the thermoelastic maps. The SIF and T-Stress are…

Narrowing the Plasmonic Sensitivity Distribution by Considering the Individual Size of Gold Nanorods

2018

The plasmonic nanoparticle sensitivity, sensing volume, and the signal-to-noise ratio are strongly dependent on the nanoparticle dimensions. It is difficult to chemically produce or purify nanoparticles with a size variation of less than 10%. This size variation induces a systematic error in sensing experiments that can be reduced when the exact size of each individual nanoparticle is known. In this work, we show how the size of gold nanorods can be estimated directly from the optical spectra of single nanoparticles by using the increase of radiation damping with the nanoparticle size. We verify our approach by comparing these spectrally estimated sizes with the precise sizes of exactly the…

A non-local model of fractional heat conduction in rigid bodies

2011

In recent years several applications of fractional differential calculus have been proposed in physics, chemistry as well as in engineering fields. Fractional order integrals and derivatives extend the well-known definitions of integer-order primitives and derivatives of the ordinary differential calculus to real-order operators. Engineering applications of fractional operators spread from viscoelastic models, stochastic dynamics as well as with thermoelasticity. In this latter field one of the main actractives of fractional operators is their capability to interpolate between the heat flux and its time-rate of change, that is related to the well-known second sound effect. In other recent s…

ON SOLVABILITY OF THE DAMPED FUČÍK TYPE PROBLEM WITH INTEGRAL CONDITION

2014

The solvability results are established for the boundary value problem with a damping term , x(0) = 0, where x + = max{x, 0}, x - = max{-x, 0}, h is a bounded nonlinearity, µ, λ real parameters. The existence results are based of the knowledge of the Fučík type spectrum for the problem with h ≡ 0

Dynamic response of beams excited by moving oscillators: Approximate analytical solutions for general boundary conditions

2023

In this paper, the dynamic response of an Euler-Bernoulli beam with general boundary conditions (BCs) and subject to a moving oscillator is examined. Notably, novel approximate closed-form expressions are determined for the vertical responses of both the beam and the moving oscillator, specifically considering the effect of damping in these systems, commonly omitted in standard approaches in the literature. In this regard, a modal superposition procedure is adopted and combined with an appropriate expansion-based approach of the dynamic response of the system, which naturally arises considering the oscillator-beam mass ratio to be reasonably small. Further, general boundary conditions are t…

Damping performance of finite microperforated plates using multi-sized and spacial distributions of perforations

2023

In the context of structural dynamics, recent works by the authors showed that microperforations can be used to mitigate vibration. Microperforated plates (MPPs) have been shown to exhibit substantial added damping stemming from fluid-structure interactions and visco-thermal effect mechanisms in the boundary layers of the perforations during relative motion between the solid and the fluid contained in the perforations. The added damping reaches a maximum for a characteristic frequency, depending only on the perforation diameter. Choosing the perforation diameter so that the characteristic frequency coincides with the natural frequency of the plate reduces the mode contribution of the plate.…

On the Stochastic Response of a Fractionally-damped Duffing Oscillator

2012

A numerical method is presented to compute the response of a viscoelastic Duffing oscillator with fractional derivative damping, subjected to a stochastic input. The key idea involves an appropriate discretization of the fractional derivative, based on a preliminary change of variable, that allows to approximate the original system by an equivalent system with additional degrees of freedom, the number of which depends on the discretization of the fractional derivative. Unlike the original system that, due to the presence of the fractional derivative, is governed by non-ordinary differential equations, the equivalent system is governed by ordinary differential equations that can be readily h…
