Assessment of regional ventilation distribution: comparison of vibration response imaging (VRI) with electrical impedance tomography (EIT)

2013

BACKGROUND: Vibration response imaging (VRI) is a bedside technology to monitor ventilation by detecting lung sound vibrations. It is currently unknown whether VRI is able to accurately monitor the local distribution of ventilation within the lungs. We therefore compared VRI to electrical impedance tomography (EIT), an established technique used for the assessment of regional ventilation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Simultaneous EIT and VRI measurements were performed in the healthy and injured lungs (ALI; induced by saline lavage) at different PEEP levels (0, 5, 10, 15 mbar) in nine piglets. Vibration energy amplitude (VEA) by VRI, and amplitudes of relative impedance changes (rel.ΔZ) …

Novel technologies to detect atelectotrauma in the injured lung

2010

ABSTRACTCyclical recruitment and derecruitment of lung parenchyma (R/D) remains a serious problem in ALI/ARDS patients, defined as atelectotrauma. Detection of cyclical R/D to titrate the optimal respiratory settings is of high clinical importance. Image-based technologies that are capable of detecting changes of lung ventilation within a respiratory cycle include dynamic computed tomography (dCT), synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SRCT), and electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Time-dependent intra-arterial oxygen tension monitoring represents an alternative approach to detect cyclical R/D, as cyclical R/D can result in oscillations of PaO2 within a respiratory cycle. Continuous…

Designing Dialogs Around Picture Book Apps

2019

In Norwegian kindergartens there is a strong emphasis on communication and language stimulation. In this educational context the reading of picture book apps offers an opportunity for extended dialogs, which have great didactic potential in that they integrate language knowledge with cultural knowledge. In this chapter we discuss what dimensions of the picture book text (words and pictures), medium (app on digital tablet) and situation (adult-child relations) that the teacher needs to take into consideration when designing dialogs to encourage early language and literacy development in kindergarten. This work represents the first phase of a major innovation project that will develop a resea…

Electrical Characterization of the Fe-Doped BT Ceramics by an Impedance Spectroscopy

2015

The electric properties of the Fe - doped BaTiO3 ceramics was investigated as a function of frequency and temperature. The structure and morphology of investigated sample were characterized by an X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The impedance measurements were carried out at the temperature ranging from 450 K to 600 K, and at the frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz. Based on these parameters the electrical properties of the grains and grains boundaries were described. The bulk and grains boundaries resistance of ceramics and the thermal activation energies were determined.

Il movimento disegnato: studi grafici sulle scenografie d’avanguardia

2018

Avoidant coping style and verbal-cardiovascular response dissociation

1996

Abstract This study explored the relationship between an avoidant coping style and three responses during three experimental periods (i.e., speech preparation, speech delivery, and recovery). One response was cardiovascular reactivity, the two other responses were subjective in nature: self-reports of anxiety and self-estimations of blood pressure. Subjects were 20 male and 20 female students who scored either in the upper third (i.e., high-avoiders) or lower third (i.e., low-avoiders) on cognitive avoidance (Krohne, 1989). When compared to subjects scoring low on avoidance, those high on avoidance showed greater systolic blood pressure (SBP) reactivity and evidenced verbal-autonomic respon…

Not everything is everywhere: the distance decay of similarity in a marine host-parasite system

2009

Aim  We test the similarity–distance decay hypothesis on a marine host–parasite system, inferring the relationships from abundance data gathered at the lowest scale of parasite community organization (i.e. that of the individual host). Location  Twenty-two seasonal samples of the bogue Boops boops (Teleostei: Sparidae) were collected at seven localities along a coastal positional gradient from the northern North-East Atlantic to the northern Mediterranean coast of Spain. Methods  We used our own, taxonomically consistent, data on parasite communities. The variations in parasite composition and structure with geographical and regional distance were examined at two spatial scales, namely loca…

Decoupled solution of radial and weakly meshed distribution networks through a backward method

2008

A methodology for the analysis of radial or weakly meshed distribution systems supplying voltage dependent loads is developed. The solution process is iterative and, at each step, the loads are simulated by means of impedances. The network is divided into two sub-networks which must be solved separately and sequentially; in the first, named RP-net, only the lines resistances and the loads shunt equivalent resistances are considered; in the second, named XQ-net, only the lines reactances and the shunt equivalent reactances are taken into account. After a brief presentation of the b/f method, which is currently the most commonly used technique to solve distribution networks, the proposed meth…

Community composition of soil microarthropods of acid forest soils as affected by wood ash application

2002

Summary The responses of soil microarthropod communities of acid forest soils to wood ash-application was studied both in a sixty years old pine forest stand (wood ash dose: 3000kg ha —1 ) and in laboratory microcosms (wood ash dose: 5000kg ha —1 ). We also tested whether microarthropod communities stressed with wood ash were more sensitive to an additional disturbance, drought, than the microarthropod communities in the ash-free soil. Microarthropods were sampled five times during the field experiment and four times during the laboratory experiment. At each sampling the abundance and community structure of microarthropods were analysed. In the field the number of collembolans, and in the l…
