Kramers–Kronig transformation, dc behaviour and steady state response of the Warburg impedance for a disk electrode inlaid in an insulating surface

2002

Abstract As the frequency approaches zero, the impedance described by the Warburg function tends to infinity. This means that the resistance of the equivalent circuit representing the electrochemical process has an infinite resistor and then the current cannot flow through it. This asymptotic behaviour also prevents the application of the Kramers–Kronig transformations, a set of integrals which should be fulfilled by any linear system. Using a more general expression of the impedance for a disk electrode inlaid in an insulating surface developed by Fleischmann and Pons (J. Electroanal. Chem. 250 (1988) 277), the Warburg impedance can be deduced and the Kramers–Kronig transformation is possi…

Unpredictability of fish recruitment: interannual variation in young-of-the-year abundance

2000

In 1989-1998, vendace larvae Coregonus albula were sampled in Finnish lakes following a stratified random sampling design. The abundance of young-of-the-year vendace after the first growing season was estimated using catch-per-unit-effort statistics. The number or total area of nursery places hardly limited the recruitment of vendace in the study lakes. The major proportion of prerecruit mortality of vendace occurred in the larval phase and larval sampling produced significant information on young-of-the-year survival. Although larval abundances and recruitment were clearly associated only in Lake Onkamo, generally high larval abundance was needed to produce high number of recruits.

Corporate tax cuts and business-friendly policies in the UK - A review of electoral arguments during the 2015 legislative campaign

2016

The stance toward big business was a heated topic during Britain’s 2015 legislative campaign that led to the triumphal, albeit slightly unexpected, reelection of David Cameron, as Prime Minister. More profoundly, it raises the issue of the economic impact of corporate tax cuts and the nature of business-friendly policies in the UK. Firstly, we investigate the electoral arguments on both sides of the political spectrum. These discussions are framed within the overarching approach known as supply-side economics, which has been prevalent in English-speaking countries since the neoliberal revolution in the late 1970s. Secondly, we put forward the idea that widening inequalities, as suggested re…

Graphic representation of data resulting from measurement comparison trials in cataract and refractive surgery.

2003

* BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of new diagnostic measurement devices allows intraindividual comparison with an established standard method. However, reports in journal articles often omit the adequate incorporation of the intraindividual design into the graphic representation. * PATIENTS AND METHODS: This article illustrates the drawbacks and the possible erroneous conclusions caused by this misleading practice in terms of recent method comparison data resulting from axial length measurement in 220 consecutive patients by both applanation ultrasound and partial coherence interferometry. * RESULTS: Graphic representation of such method comparison data should be based on boxplots…

Connected and Autonomous Vehicles cooperate with the pedestrian in industrial sites based on trajectory optimization and vehicle signalization system

2020

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) is the development trend in the field of transportation systems. Recent studies show that the resources sharing between pedestrians and CAV is a big challenge. Considering traffic safety and efficiency at that sharing point not only requires a collision avoidance system but also more communicative behaviors of the CAV. More precisely, pedestrian needs to understand the intention of the incoming CAV whether it will cross first or not according to its speed profile. This paper uses the optimal trajectory control to provide CAV with a communicative behavior. A scenario where CAV and pedestrian cooperate together to cross a conflict zone is studied. A com…

Organizational Media Affordances: Operationalization and Associations with Media Use

2017

The concept of affordances has been increasingly applied to the study of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in organizational contexts. However, almost no research operationalizes affordances, limiting comparisons and programmatic research. This article briefly reviews conceptualizations and possibilities of affordances in general and for media, then introduces the concept of organizational media affordances as organizational resources. Analysis of survey data from a large Nordic media organization identified six reliable and valid organizational media affordances: pervasiveness, editability, self-presentation, searchability, visibility, and awareness. Eight media scales base…

Epistemic Search Sequences in Peer Interaction in a Content-based Language Classroom

2013

Epistemics in interaction refers to how participants display, manage, and orient to their own and others’ states of knowledge. This article applies recent conversation analytical work on epistemics to classrooms where language and content instruction are combined. It focuses on Epistemic Search Sequences (ESSs) through which students in peer interaction collectively resolve emerging knowledge gaps while working on pedagogic tasks. ESSs are initiated when a speaker displays an ‘unknowing’ epistemic stance by making an information request about some aspect of language or the content being worked on. We examine three different types of ESS: those in which a ‘knowing’ response is accepted by th…

Languaging in Ultima Thule: Multilingualism in the Life of a Sami Boy

2008

Abstract In this paper we investigate multilingualism as a phenomenon which pervades different social and cultural levels but is manifested in the everyday life of multilingual individuals. As an illustration, we examine multilingualism from the perspective of a young Sami boy, Ante, and explore how different languages function as a complex – but at times problematic – set of resources for him. To capture the complexity and fluidity in the relationships between various languages in his life, we base our theorising on such concepts as ‘linguistic resources’, ‘heteroglossia’ and ‘languaging’. With the help of multimodal data we examine how the linguistic resources present in Ante's daily life…

Openings in technology-mediated business meetings

2015

The prerequisites for opening a meeting, or beginning any kind of interaction for that matter, are participants’ presence and shared orientation towards the situation at hand. This paper analyses how the initial moments of technology-mediated business meetings involving distributed work groups are organized sequentially and multimodally. Drawing on video-recorded meetings in an international company, it documents the multimodal practices used in the process of establishing co-orientation to the shared meeting space and achieving entry into the meeting. The analysis shows that the stepwise unfolding of the opening phase requires the coordination of verbal and bodily conducts as well as the a…
