Head Pose Estimation for Sign Language Video

2013

We address the problem of estimating three head pose angles in sign language video using the Pointing04 data set as training data. The proposed model employs facial landmark points and Support Vector Regression learned from the training set to identify yaw and pitch angles independently. A simple geometric approach is used for the roll angle. As a novel development, we propose to use the detected skin tone areas within the face bounding box as additional features for head pose estimation. The accuracy level of the estimators we obtain compares favorably with published results on the same data, but the smaller number of pose angles in our setup may explain some of the observed advantage.

A Hybrid Algorithm Based on WiFi for Robust and Effective Indoor Positioning

2019

Indoor positioning based on the Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) protocol and the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) approach is widely exploited because of the existing WiFi infrastructure in buildings and the advancement of built-in smartphone sensors. In this work, a hybrid algorithm that combines WiFi fingerprinting and PDR to both exploit their advantages as well as limiting the impact of their disadvantages is proposed. Specifically, to build a probability map from noisy Received Signal Strength (RSS), a Gaussian Process (GP) regression is deployed to estimate and construct the RSS fingerprints with incomplete data. Mean and variance of generated points are used to estimate WiFi fingerprinting p…

Validation of a Reinforcement Learning Policy for Dosage Optimization of Erythropoietin

2007

This paper deals with the validation of a Reinforcement Learning (RL) policy for dosage optimization of Erythropoietin (EPO). This policy was obtained using data from patients in a haemodialysis program during the year 2005. The goal of this policy was to maintain patients' Haemoglobin (Hb) level between 11.5 g/dl and 12.5 g/dl. An individual management was needed, as each patient usually presents a different response to the treatment. RL provides an attractive and satisfactory solution, showing that a policy based on RL would be much more successful in achieving the goal of maintaining patients within the desired target of Hb than the policy followed by the hospital so far. In this work, t…

Can Dasymetric Mapping Significantly Improve Population Data Reallocation in a Dense Urban Area?

2016

The issue of reallocating population figures from a set of geographical units onto another set of units has received a great deal of attention in the literature. Every other day, a new algorithm is proposed, claiming that it outperforms competitor procedures. Unfortunately, when the new (usually more complex) methods are applied to a new data set, the improvements attained are sometimes just marginal. The relationship cost-effectiveness of the solutions is case-dependent. The majority of studies have focused on large areas with heterogeneous population density distributions. The general conclusion is that as a rule more sophisticated methods are worth the effort. It could be argued, however…

Pattern Classification from Multi-beam Acoustic Data Acquired in Kongsfjorden

2021

Climate change is causing a structural change in Arctic ecosystems, decreasing the effectiveness that the polar regions have in cooling water masses, with inevitable repercussions on the climate and with an impact on marine biodiversity. The Svalbard islands under study are an area greatly influenced by Atlantic waters. This area is undergoing changes that are modifying the composition and distribution of the species present. The aim of this work is to provide a method for the classification of acoustic patterns acquired in the Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Arctic Circle using multibeam technology. Therefore the general objective is the implementation of a methodology useful for identifying the a…

CLUSTERING INCOMPLETE SPECTRAL DATA WITH ROBUST METHODS

2018

Abstract. Missing value imputation is a common approach for preprocessing incomplete data sets. In case of data clustering, imputation methods may cause unexpected bias because they may change the underlying structure of the data. In order to avoid prior imputation of missing values the computational operations must be projected on the available data values. In this paper, we apply a robust nan-K-spatmed algorithm to the clustering problem on hyperspectral image data. Robust statistics, such as multivariate medians, are more insensitive to outliers than classical statistics relying on the Gaussian assumptions. They are, however, computationally more intractable due to the lack of closed-for…

INTEGRATED SFM TECHNIQUES USING DATA SET FROM GOOGLE EARTH 3D MODEL AND FROM STREET LEVEL

2017

Abstract. Structure from motion (SfM) represents a widespread photogrammetric method that uses the photogrammetric rules to carry out a 3D model from a photo data set collection. Some complex ancient buildings, such as Cathedrals, or Theatres, or Castles, etc. need to implement the data set (realized from street level) with the UAV one in order to have the 3D roof reconstruction. Nevertheless, the use of UAV is strong limited from the government rules. In these last years, Google Earth (GE) has been enriched with the 3D models of the earth sites. For this reason, it seemed convenient to start to test the potentiality offered by GE in order to extract from it a data set that replace the UAV …

Comparison between statistical and fuzzy approaches for improving diagnostic decision making in patients with chronic nasal symptoms

2014

This paper compares a fuzzy model, expressed in rule-form, with a well known statistical approach (i.e. logistic regression model) for diagnostic decision making in patients with chronic nasal symptoms. The analyses were carried out using a database obtained from a questionnaire administered to 1359 patients with nasal symptoms containing personal data, clinical data and skin prick test (SPT) results. Both the fuzzy model and the logistic regression model developed were validated using a data set obtained from another medical institution. The accuracy of the two models in identifying patients with positive or negative SPT was similar. This study is a preliminary step to the creation of a so…

Quantification and Characterization of Pulmonary Emphysema in Multislice-CT

2003

The new technology of the Multislice-CT provides volume data sets with approximately isotropic resolution, which permits a non invasive measurement of diffuse lung diseases like emphysema in the 3D space. The aim of our project is the development of a full automatic 3D CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) software tool for detection, quantification and characterization of emphysema in a thoracic CT data set. It should supply independently an analysis of an image data set to support the physician in clinical daily routine. In this paper we describe the developed 3D algorithms for the segmentation of the tracheo-bronchial tree, the lungs and the emphysema regions. We present different emphysema des…

The construction of a subset of ICNP® for patients with dementia: a Delphi consensus and a group interview study

2015

Background The International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) 2013 includes over 4000 concepts for global nursing diagnoses, outcomes and interventions and is a large and complex set of standardised nursing concepts and expressions. Nurses may use subsets from the ICNP as concepts and expressions for research, education and clinical practice. The objective of this study was to identify and validate concepts for an ICNP subset to guide observations and documentation of nursing care for patients with dementia. Method The process model for developing ICNP subsets was followed, according to the guidelines adopted by the International Council of Nursing (ICN). To identify relevant and…
