Consistency of Targeted Metatranscriptomics and Morphological Characterization of Phytoplankton Communities
2020
The composition of phytoplankton community is the basis for environmental monitoring and assessment of the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. Community composition studies of phytoplankton have been based on time-consuming and expertise-demanding light microscopy analyses. Molecular methods have the potential to replace microscopy, but the high copy number variation of ribosomal genes and the lack of universal primers for simultaneous amplification of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genes complicate data interpretation. In this study, we used our previously developed directional primer-independent high-throughput sequencing (HTS) approach to analyze 16S and 18S rRNA community structures. C…
Protocol: A literature review about the use of crowdsourcing in educational environments
2016
<p>The objective with the protocol described in this paper is to review the existing literature in relation to the implementation of crowdsourcing in educational environments. It seeks to give answer to 4 questions. First, it seeks to answer the question of which kind of crowdsourcing initiatives are more appropriate to be used for educational activities. In second place it’s important to find out whether there is any particular discipline in which crowdsourcing, by its nature, can be applied more naturally. Third, it seeks to identify which factors influence both positively and negatively in the teaching/learning experience using crowdsourcing. Finally, the last question to answer, t…
Mexican journals of educational research towards mainstream dissemination of science
2014
The purpose of this study is to analyze the Electronic Journal of Educational Research (REDIE) on its path towards the common manner of scientific dissemination. This research presents the evolution of Mexican policy with regards to the journals, the situation of the Educational Research Mexican journals, and its profundity relating to REDIE. In its evolution, there were three moments that stood out the most: the standardization of quality criteria, the digitalization and open access of the scientific journals, those that came together with REDIE like REDALYC and LATINDEX , and the individual initiatives of those journals that motivated the development of the scientific dissemination in Mex…

Transition-Selective Pulses in Zero-Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
2016
We use low-amplitude, ultralow frequency pulses to drive nuclear spin transitions in zero and ultralow magnetic fields. In analogy to high-field NMR, a range of sophisticated experiments becomes available as these allow narrow-band excitation. As a first demonstration, pulses with excitation bandwidths 0.5–5 Hz are used for population redistribution, selective excitation, and coherence filtration. These methods are helpful when interpreting zero- and ultralow-field NMR spectra that contain a large number of transitions.
Hospitalization for self-harm during the early months of the Covid-19 pandemic in France: a nationwide study
2020
ABSTRACTIntroductionLittle is known to date about the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on self-harm incidence.MethodsThe number of hospitalizations for self-harm in France (mainland and overseas) from January to August 2020 (which includes the first confinement from March 17th to May 11th) was compared to the same period in 2019-2017. Hospital data with the ICD-10 codes X60-84 were extracted from the national administrative database (PMSI).ResultsThere were 53,583 hospitalizations for self-harm in France between January and August 2020. Compared to the same period in 2019, this represents an overall 8.5% decrease. This decrease started the first week of the confinement and the number of hospital…
Development of Waste Collection Model Using Mobile Phone Data: A Case Study in Latvia
2020
In organizing household waste management and controlling waste collection and disposal, it is necessary to minimise risks to the environment and human health and, where possible, ensure that waste is recycled and returned to the economic cycle. Different models are being applied to increase waste collection management efficiency, but in recent years, the mobile phone data is widely used to solve various application problems. The research objective is to develop a waste collection model, which responds to the population’s current demands and allows planning waste container loading, based on mobile phone data statistics. The developed approach, techniques and data model can be used for waste …
Monitoring fungal biodiversity – towards an integrated approach
2012
Biodiversity information databases and platforms have seen considerable progress in recent years. They have a high potential in conservation science in general, but may be even more revolutionary in relation to poorly known species groups such as fungi, whose practical conservation work has been jeopardised by scattered and poorly controlled information. We review the tradition of collecting information on species occurrences in mycology and discuss the characteristics of the present fungal biodiversity information databases. With a special focus on population trend monitoring of fruit body producing macrofungi, we emphasise several unrealised opportunities of these databases and point out …
Genetic database development for the characterisation of Sicilian sheep population
2019
The most representative sheep in Sicily are Belicina, Comisana, Pinzirita, Barbarescaand the crossbred derived sheep from all this species. In this study, the allelic frequencies of the Sicilian sheep population were investigated. It currently represents the best way to determine the genetic identity and/or family even with limited amounts of sample or when the DNA is degraded. The aim of the study was to provide a reference data bank and to evaluate a microsatellite panel for pedigree analysis as suggested by the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG). There are various studies on European sheep, but few datasets were developed on the population of Sicilian sheep. The reference d…
Scatter search for an uncapacitated p-hub median problem
2015
Scatter search is a population-based method that has been shown to yield high-quality outcomes for combinatorial optimization problems. It uses strategies for combining solution vectors that have proved effective in a variety of problem settings. In this paper, we present a scatter search implementation for an NP -hard variant of the classic p-hub median problem. Specifically, we tackle the uncapacitated r-allocation p-hub median problem, which consists of minimizing the cost of transporting the traffics between nodes of a network through special facilities that act as transshipment points. This problem has a significant number of applications in practice, such as the design of transportati…
