Czytanie Süskinda
2016
Plots created by Patrick Süskind are transparent and uncomplicated; they follow a conventional path, seemingly aloof from formal modernist experiments, and close with distinctive endings; in popular reception, they give a sense of confidence that even the most fantastic worlds, derived from the corners of imagination, may be set into a familiar and closed whole. Perhaps this simplicity makes it easy to be satisfied by their seductive plot and steer clear off tracks leading to the content encrypted within the deep structure. The author of the present paper attempts to interpret the short stories: {Maître Mussard's Bequest} and {The Story of Mr Sommer} as a metaphorical and grotesque vision o…
Bóg i „śmierć Boga” w pisarstwie Tomasza Mertona
2018
Thomas Merton, the American Trappist monk and religious writer, is the author of The Seven Storey Mountain, Seeds of Contemplation, The Ascent to Truth, the New Man and many other works in the field of spirituality. He is also an analytical thinker comparing scholastic philosophy with modern existentialism. In Conjectures of a guilty bystander he takes up a polemic with the Heideggerian concept of death. Merton examines this issue from the point of view of Christian axiology. The dogma of existentialism is something illogical to him: the idea of “the death of God”. His entire work is linked to a polemic with Thomas Altizer, an Anglican theologian inspired by the philosophy of Fryderyk Nietz…

Should inflammatory pathways be targeted for the prevention and treatment of hypertension?
2019
Hypertension is the most common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD)1 and is a leading cause of death globally.2 Hypertension and CVD share common antecedent risk factors which include physical inactivity, obesity and excess alcohol intake.3 Though these established risk factors explain a large proportion of hypertension risk, its pathogenesis is still not fully established as it appears that other additional lifestyle and genetic factors may be involved. There is therefore a need to identify and evaluate putative risk factors that may increase our knowledge of hypertension development, may have causal or predictive relevance, and which will help develop preventive and ma…

[Is ICD-programming for double intraoperative defibrillation threshold energy safe and effective during long-time follow-up? Results of a prospective…
1999
The aim of this prospective and randomized study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a reduced shock strength in transvenous implantable defibrillator therapy. So far clinical data concerning the safety margin of the shock energy in ICD therapy do not exist. The shock energy tested during long-term follow-up in this study was twice the intraoperatively measured defibrillation threshold (DFT). A total number of 176 consecutive patients representing a typical cohort of ICD patients were evaluated. All patients received a non-thoracotomy lead system (CPI, Endotak 0070, 0090) and a biphasic cardioverter-defibrillator with the ability to store episodes (Cardiac Pacemakers Inc., Ventac TM …
Stromal Interaction Molecule 1 (STIM1) Is Involved in the Regulation of Mitochondrial Shape and Bioenergetics and Plays a Role in Oxidative Stress
2012
Calcium ions are involved in a plethora of cellular functions including cell death and mitochondrial energy metabolism. Store-operated Ca(2+) entry over the plasma membrane is activated by depletion of intracellular Ca(2+) stores and is mediated by the sensor STIM1 and the channel ORAI1. We compared cell death susceptibility to oxidative stress in STIM1 knock-out and ORAI1 knockdown mouse embryonic fibroblasts and in knock-out cells with reconstituted wild type and dominant active STIM1. We show that STIM1 and ORAI1 deficiency renders cells more susceptible to oxidative stress, which can be rescued by STIM1 and ORAI1 overexpression. STIM1 knock-out mitochondria are tubular, have a higher Ca…
Czas zgonu w kontekście nauk penalnych
2016
Celem pracy jest przybliżenie prawnikom trudu prac, jakie musi wykonać medyk sądowy szacujący czas zgonu. Ma to pomóc w minimalizacji niezrozumienia owej czynności w relacjach przedstawicieli tych dwóch grup zawodowych w procesie karnym. Opis czynności, jakie kolejno następują podczas próby ustalenia interwału pośmiertnego, ma pomóc w zrozumie-niu poziomu komplikacji w stosunku do istniejących regulacji prawnych i możliwości technicz-nych.
