Intelligent Energy Management System
2009
Energy management is nowadays a subject of great importance and complexity. It consists in choosing among a set of sources able to produce energy that will give energy to a set of loads by minimising losses and costs. The sources and loads are heterogeneous, distributed and the reaction of the system, the choice of sources, must be done in real-time to avoid power outage. The goal of this paper is to present a system able to self-regulate a heterogeneous set of power sources and loads organised as a coherent group of entities that is called micro-grid, in order to optimize several criteria such as: cost and efficiency. This system is based upon the Multi-Agent Systems paradigm. Each micro-g…
SOFIA: a decision support System for the Optimization of the biomass supply chain and Forest Integrated management in protected areas
2019
A decision support System for the Optimization of the biomass supply chain and Forest Integrated Management in protected areas (SOFIA) is presented. All functionalities have been developed in Python language embedded in the open-source QGIS 3.6 software. Two models were implemented with an approach and methodology based on free and open source software (QGIS, GRASS, SAGA, GDAL). The main aim of SOFIA is to support the Madonie Regional Natural Park authority and forest managers in decision-making processes to assess the costs and benefits in the energy production from residual agro-forestry biomass, as well as for determining the optimum plant size (and power) for energy and heat production …
A survey on energy performance of the non-residential public building stock in Southern Italy; toward a decision support tool for refurbishment actio…
2016
The public buildings sector represents one of the most intensive items of EU energy consumption; the application of retrofit solutions in existing buildings is a crucial way to reduce its impact. To facilitate the knowledge of the energy performance of the existing non-residential buildings and the choice of the more adequate actions, Public Administrations (PA) should have the availability of proper tools. Within the Italian project “POI 2007-13”, a database and a decision support tool, for easy use, even to a non-technical user, have been developed. A large set of data, obtained from the energy audits of 151 existing public buildings located in four regions of South of Italy have been ana…
Mobility, Data, and Behavior: The TrafficO2 Case Study
2015
This chapter presents the social innovation project “TrafficO2”, a support system for decision-making in the field of transportation that tries to push commuters towards more sustainable mobility by providing concrete incentives for each responsible choice. After focusing on Palermo, Italy, the context of this case study, this chapter provides a detailed description of the TrafficO2 model. Specifically, the chapter deals with the analysis of a selected sample of users among Palermo University students who commute daily to their respective University departments on campus. Starting from the modal split of the actual situation (Status Quo scenario), another behavior scenario (Do your right mi…
Exploiting the Human Factor in a WSN-Based System for Ambient Intelligence
2009
Practical applications of ambient intelligence cannot leave aside requirements about ubiquity, scalability, and transparency to the user. An enabling technology to comply with this goal is represented by wireless sensor networks (WSNs); however, although capable of limited in-network processing, they lack the computational power to act as a comprehensive intelligent system. By taking inspiration from the sensory processing model of complex biological organisms, we propose here a cognitive architecture able to perceive, decide upon, and control the environment of which the system is part. WSNs act as a transparent interface that allows the system to understand human requirements through impl…
An Adaptive Bayesian System for Context-Aware Data Fusion in Smart Environments
2017
The adoption of multi-sensor data fusion techniques is essential to effectively merge and analyze heterogeneous data collected by multiple sensors, pervasively deployed in a smart environment. Existing literature leverages contextual information in the fusion process, to increase the accuracy of inference and hence decision making in a dynamically changing environment. In this paper, we propose a context-aware, self-optimizing, adaptive system for sensor data fusion, based on a three-tier architecture. Heterogeneous data collected by sensors at the lowest tier are combined by a dynamic Bayesian network at the intermediate tier, which also integrates contextual information to refine the infe…
Assessing Coastal Sustainability: A Bayesian Approach for Modeling and Estimating a Global Index for Measuring Risk
2013
Integrated Coastal Zone Management is an emerg- ing research area. The aim is to provide a global view of dif- ferent and heterogeneous aspects interacting in a geographical area. Decision Support Systems, integrating Computational Intelligence methods, can be successfully used to estimate use- ful anthropic and environmental indexes. Bayesian Networks have been widely used in the environmental science domain. In this paper a Bayesian model for estimating the Sustainable Coastal Index is presented. The designed Bayesian Network consists of 17 nodes, hierarchically organized in 4 layers. The first layer is initialized with the season and the physiographic region information. In the second la…
A Knowledge Management System using Bayesian Network
2009
In today's world, decision support and knowledge management processes are strategic and interdependent activities in many organizations. The companies' interest on a correct knowledge management is grown, more than interest on the mere knowledge itself. This paper proposes a Knowledge Management System based on Bayesian networks. The system has been tested collecting and using data coming from projects and processes typical of ICT companies, and provides a Document Management System and a Decision Support system to share documents and to plan how to best use firms' knowledge.
The Shift toward a Sustainable Urban Mobility through Decision Support Systems
2017
This chapter examines Decision support systems (DSS) are instrumental in the sustainable development of urban mobility, as they are useful to each decision maker to better predict, evaluate, and measure the impact of alternative solutions and to take informed and evidence-based decisions. It presents a number of DSSs explaining how sustainable mobility targets could be reached through these systems. The chapter highlights the transition toward a more sustainable mobility model not only comprises innovation at vehicle or infrastructure level, but also requires interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial expertise together with effective decision making support. When a DSS for sustainable urban mob…
An Intelligent System for Building Bioinformatics Workflows
2012
In this paper a new intelligent system designed to support the researcher in the development of a workflow for bio informatics experiments is presented. The proposed system is capable to suggest one or more strategies in order to resolve the selected problem and to support the user in the assembly of a workflow for complex experiments, using a a Knowledge base, representing the expertise about the application domain, and a Rule-Based system for decision-making activity. Moreover, the system can represent this workflow at different abstraction layers, freeing the user from implementation details and assisting him in the correct configuration of the algorithms. A sample workflow for protein c…
