Entropy-Based Classifier Enhancement to Handle Imbalanced Class Problem

2017

The paper presents a possible enhancement of entropy-based classifiers to handle problems, caused by the class imbalance in the original dataset. The proposed method was tested on synthetic data in order to analyse its robustness in the controlled environment with different class proportions. As also the proposed method was tested on the real medical data with imbalanced classes and compared to the original classification algorithm results. The medical field was chosen for testing due to frequent situations with uneven class ratios.

Efficient Multi-scale Patch-Based Segmentation

2015

The objective of this paper is to devise an efficient and accurate patch-based method for image segmentation. The method presented in this paper builds on the work of Wu et al. [14] with the introduction of a compact multi-scale feature representation and heuristics to speed up the process. A smaller patch representation along with hierarchical pruning allowed the inclusion of more prior knowledge, resulting in a more accurate segmentation. We also propose an intuitive way of optimizing the search strategy to find similar voxel, making the method computationally efficient. An additional approach at improving the speed was explored with the integration of our method with Optimised PatchMatch…

From the nearest neighbour rule to decision trees

1998

This paper proposes an algorithm to design a tree-like classifier whose result is equivalent to that achieved by the classical Nearest Neighbour rule. The procedure consists of a particular decomposition of a d-dimensional feature space into a set of convex regions with prototypes from just one class. Some experimental results over synthetic and real databases are provided in order to illustrate the applicability of the method.

Overview of the three multicriteria approaches applied to a global assessment of analytical methods

2020

Abstract Critical and global evaluation of analytical methods should be one of the primary goals in analytical chemistry. A holistic approach, however, requires a look at the varied features: commonly discussed validation criteria, often underrated practical and economic aspects, and typically overlooked compliance with the principles of green analytical chemistry. Carrying out such an assessment in a critical and transparent way is extremely difficult without special tools. The purpose of this work is to discuss and compare the three different approaches that seem to be potential candidates: multi-criteria decision analysis methods (MCDA), HEXAGON, and RGB model. The basic principles of ea…

The Implications of Fuzzy Logic in Qualitative Mathematical Modeling of Some Key Aspects Related to the Sustainability Issues around “Roşia Montană P…

2013

Abstract This paper aims to address in terms of fuzzy logic the qualitative mathematical modeling of some key aspects that implies ensuring of sustainability within “Rosia Montana mining Project”, both from the business itself perspective, as well as from the community and ecological ones. The proposed fuzzy methodology is also very useful and can be successfully applied for any company that evolves in uncertainty and ambiguity conditions and within which the decisional factor reasoning is subjective, due to itself abstract thinking of human being in this kind of situations, which often manifests itself through qualitative linguistic values. In this context, the development of a fuzzy metho…

The Holonic Production System: a Multi Agent Simulation Approach

2010

Today’s turbulent markets are facing unpredictable and sudden variations in demand. In this context, the Holonic Production System (HPS) seems to be able to overcome the operational and economic problems of traditional production systems. The HPS’ ability to adapt and react to business environment changes, whilst maintaining systemic synergies and coordination, leverage on its network organizational structure, assuring both flexibility and profitability. In this paper we study HPS experimentally, modeling holon-firms as agents. In our simulation, holon-firms interact both with each other and with the external environment without predetermined hierarchies and following their own aims and int…

Ethics in designing intelligent systems

2019

The idea of Hume’s guillotine contains the argument that one cannot derive values from facts. As intelligent systems operate with facts, Hume’s famous dilemma seems to contradict the very idea of being able to create ethical intelligent systems. In a closer look, ethics is a system of rules guiding actions. Actions always have factual or cognitive aspects, as well as evaluative or emotional aspects. Therefore, Hume’s juxtaposition of facts and norms is not well-founded. Instead of separating the facts and norms it should rather ask what kinds of facts are associated to what kinds of norms. Consequently, Hume’s guillotine sets no limits in processing ethical information, as one can combine f…

A risk evaluation framework for the best maintenance strategy: the case of a marine salt manufacture firm

2020

Highlights • This paper proposes a MCDM framework to support risk evaluation for maintenance activities. • The ANP is proposed to select the best maintenance strategy on the basis of real systems’ features. • The ELECTRE III is used to prioritise the main risks related to the interventions of the selected maintenance policy. • The proposed framework is applied to a core subsystem of a real-world marine salt manufacture firm.

Introducing Continuous Time Meta-Analysis (CoTiMA)

2019

Meta-analysis of panel data is uniquely suited to uncovering phenomena that develop over time, but extant approaches are limited. There is no straightforward means of aggregating findings of primary panel studies that use different time lags and different numbers of waves. We introduce continuous time meta-analysis (CoTiMA) as a parameter-based approach to meta-analysis of cross-lagged panel correlation matrices. CoTiMA enables aggregation of studies using two or more waves even if there are varying time lags within and between studies. CoTiMA thus provides meta-analytic estimates of cross-lagged effects for a given time lag regardless of the frequency with which that time lag is used in p…
