Towards a novel energy density functional for beyond-mean-field calculations with pairing and deformation
2018
We take an additional step towards the optimization of the novel finite-range pseudopotential at constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov level and implement an optimization procedure within an axial code using harmonic oscillator basis. We perform the optimization using three different numbers of the harmonic oscillator shells. We apply the new parameterizations in the O-Kr part of the nuclear chart and isotopic chain of Sn, and we compare the results with experimental values and those given by a parameterization obtained using a spherical code.
From supersymmetric to non-supersymmetric black holes
2012
Methods similar to those used for obtaining supersymmetric black hole solutions can be employed to find also non-supersymmetric solutions. We briefly review some of them, with the emphasis on the non-extremal deformation ansatz of [1].
Nucleon Pairing and Seniority
2007
Until now we have been dealing with particle and hole aspects of nuclear structure. In this second part of the book we go farther away from a closed major shell. Still near the beginning or end of a major shell we encounter vibrational, spherical open-shell nuclei that cannot be described in terms of a few particles or holes. Farther towards the middle of the shell the spherical shape will give way to permanent deformation signalled by rotational bands analogous to those of diatomic molecules. Microscopic description of such nuclei requires a deformed mean field as the starting point. Deformed nuclei will not be considered in any detail in this book.
Ellipsoidal deformation of vertical quantum dots
1999
Addition energy spectra at 0 T of circular and ellipsoidally deformed few-electron vertical quantum dots are measured and compared to results of model calculations within spin-density functional theory. Because of the rotational symmetry of the lateral harmonic confining potential, circular dots show a pronounced shell structure. With the lifting of the single- particle level degeneracies, even a small deformation is found to radically alter the shell structure leading to significant modifications in the addition energy spectra. Breaking the circular symmetry with deformation also induces changes in the total spin. This "piezo-magnetic" behavior of quantum dots is discussed, and the additio…
Positron Annihilation in Steel Samples Deformed by Uniaxial Tension
2008
Angular distributions of the positron annihilation quanta were measured for steel ST2 SAL samples deformed by uniaxial tension up to difierent deformation degrees. The dependences of the S parameter on the relative elongation of the samples are presented. The positron annihilation data for steel are compared with the results obtained previously for polycrystalline iron samples deformed by uniaxial tension up to difierent deformation degrees in the proportionality and limited proportionality regions.
Travelling Panels Made of Viscoelastic Material
2013
In this chapter, our focus is to analyse the behaviour of moving panels using viscoelastic materials. As the reader will have noticed, all the models discussed in previous chapters have concerned the case of a purely elastic material. The deformation of an elastic material depends only on the applied forces; it has no explicit time dependence. Paper, however, is a more complicated material: it is viscoelastic. In addition to elastic properties, it has also time-dependent viscous properties, which cause the phenomena of creep and relaxation (see, e.g., Alava and Niskanen 2006). One of the simplest models for a viscoelastic solid is the Kelvin–Voigt model, which consists of a linear spring an…
Mechanically Based Nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli Beam Model
2014
AbstractThis paper presents a nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beam model. It is assumed that the equilibrium of a beam segment is attained because of the classical local stress resultants, along with long-range volume forces and moments exchanged by the beam segment with all the nonadjacent beam segments. Elastic long-range volume forces/moments are considered, built as linearly depending on the product of the volumes of the interacting beam segments and on generalized measures of their relative motion, based on the pure deformation modes of the beam. Attenuation functions governing the space decay of the nonlocal effects are introduced. The motion equations are derived in an integro-differential …
The Reasonable Effectiveness of Mathematical Deformation Theory in Physics
2019
This is a brief reminder, with extensions, from a different angle and for a less specialized audience, of my presentation at WGMP32 in July 2013, to which I refer for more details on the topics hinted at in the title, mainly deformation theory applied to quantization and symmetries (of elementary particles).
Clustering effects in 48Cr composite nucleus produced via the reaction 24Mg + 24Mg at the excitation energy of 60 MeV
2013
The reaction 24Mg + 24Mg was used to produce the composite nucleus 48Cr at 60 MeV of excitation energy where a narrow resonance (170 KeV) has been found by measuring the elastic and inelastic channels. To determine the occurrence of deformation of this compound nucleus and its possible connection with the resonances and the hypothetical cluster structure, evaporative Light Charged Particles (LCP) were measured and compared to Statistical Model (SM) predictions. The experiment was performed at LNL using the 8πLP apparatus. The comparison of the evaporation residue-LCP coincidence angular distributions and LCP energy spectra with SM calculations supports the presence of a very large deformati…
Description of giant resonances with Skyrme forces
2011
Some representative cases of the description and analysis of giant resonances within the self-consistent separable random-phase-approximation model (SRPA) based on the Skyrme functional are discussed. It is shown that SRPA with SLy6 force well describes the dipole giant resonance in rare-earth and actinide regions. The sensitivity of the E1 strength near the particle thresholds to nuclear deformation is scrutinized. Finally, the open problems of description of spin-flip M1 resonance are discussed.
