Physiological engineering of Pseudomonas aurantiaca antimicrobial activity: effects of sodium chloride treatment
2012
The influence of sodium chloride (NaCl) treatment on the antifungal activity of the bacterium Pseudomonas aurantiaca, a producer of biopesticide for vegetable plants, was investigated. It was shown that an increase in the NaCl concentration in incubation solutions from 1 M to 3 M led to a significant increase in the antifungal activity of this bacterium. Antifungal activity continued to increase with prolonged treatment of bacteria in fresh nutrient medium from 72 h to 96 h. These findings could be very important for the further development of biotechnological processes directed not only to the production of new active biopesticides but also of other valuable resources.
Industrial production of dried yeast: plasma membrane as a survival indicator of air drying process
2011
International audience; Preservation of microorganisms by desiccationis a major industrial interest. However, study of cell survival mechanismsthat occur during desiccation is complex. In this work, the impact of the magnitude and the kinetics of dehydration on yeastsurvival wereevaluatedin either hyperosmotic liquid medium or a gaseous environment. Asame lethal magnitude of dehydration and a same lethal kinetic effect were found. As previously shown for osmotic stress, this work demonstrate that yeast survival after drying was also related to plasma membrane disorganization, suggesting a similar passive rearrangement of the membrane components.Hyperosmotic treatment in liquid medium represe…
Mitochondria inheritance is a key factor for tolerance to dehydration in wine yeast production
2015
UNLABELLED Mitochondria are the cell's powerhouse when organisms are grown in the presence of oxygen. They are also the source of reactive oxygen species that cause damage to the biochemical components of the cell and lead to cellular ageing and death. Under winemaking conditions, Saccharomyces yeasts exclusively have a fermentative metabolism due to the high sugar content of grape must. However, their production as an active dry yeast (ADY) form required aerobic propagation and a dehydration process. In these industrial steps, oxidative stress is particularly harmful for the cell. In this work, we analysed the impact of the mitochondrial genome on oxidative stress response, longevity and d…
Investigation of the phase transitions occurring during and after the dehydration of xylazine hydrochloride monohydrate.
2014
This paper reports an investigation of a complex solid state phase transition where two inter-converting polymorphs (X and A) of the pharmaceutical molecule xylazine hydrochloride formed and transformed during and after the dehydration of its monohydrate (H). The crystal structures of all three forms were compared. During the investigation of this solid state phase transition it was determined that the dehydration of H produced either a pure X form, or a mixture of the X and A forms. The phase composition depended on the sample preparation procedure and the experimental conditions. It was found that grinding of the hydrate enhanced the formation of polymorph X as a product of dehydration, w…
Experimental study on the free transplantation of mucosa and lyophilised dura to the oral cavity
1978
Summary The covering of epithelial defects in the oral cavity presents special problems in preprosthetic surgery, since special requisites for function and quality of mucosal grafts must be satisfied. In animal experiments mucosal defects in the oral cavity of 30 rabbits were repaired with free transplants of autologous mucosa and heterologous lyophilised dura. A comparative clinical and histological assessment of the healing processes showed that there was no essential difference between both methods. Considering the necessary second intervention, the infliction of a second wound, as well as the limited source of mucosa, our results show that the use of lyophilised dura in preprosthetic su…
Ergosterol biosynthesis: a fungal pathway for life on land?
2012
International audience; Sterols, essential lipids of most eukaryotic cells, ensure important structural and signaling functions. The selection pressure that has led to different dominant sterols in the three eukaryotic kingdoms remains unknown. Here, we investigated the influence of the progression in the different steps of the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway (EBP) on the yeast resistance to transitions from aqueous to aerial media, typical perturbations of the higher fungi habitats. Five mutants of the EBP (ergΔ), accumulating different sterol intermediates in the EBP, and the wild-type (WT) strain were exposed to drying under atmospheric air or nitrogen and wetting. Results show that the …
Mild dehydration: a risk factor of urinary tract infection?
2003
Bacterial growth in the urinary tract is usually prevented by host factors including bacterial eradication by urinary and mucus flow, urothelial bactericidal activity, urinary secretory IgA, and blood group antigens in secretions which interfere with bacterial adherence. Bacterial eradication from the urinary tract is partially dependent on urine flow and voiding frequency. Therefore, it seems logical to postulate a connection between fluid intake and the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, experimental and clinical data on this subject are conflicting. Experimental studies concerning the effect of water intake on susceptibility and course of UTIs were predominantly performed …
Prediction of mass fluxes in the pervaporation process of the ethanol dehydration, based on the free volume theory
2014
Breathing effect in a cobalt phosphonate upon dehydration/rehydration: a single-crystal-to-single-crystal study.
2013
Two cobalt phosphonates, [Co2(2,2′-bpy)2(H2O)(pbtcH)] (1) and [Co2(H2O)(pbtcH)(phen)2] (2; pbtcH5=5-phosphonatophenyl-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid, 2,2′-bpy=2,2′-bipyridine, phen=1,10-phenanthroline), with layer structures are reported. Compound 1 contains O-C-O and O-P-O bridged tetramers of Co4, which are further connected by pbtcH(4-) units to form a layer. In compound 2, the cobalt tetramers made up of water-bridged Co2 dimers and O-P-O linkages are connected into a layer by pbtcH(4-) units. Upon dehydration, compounds 1 and 2 experience single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) structural transformations to form [Co2(2,2′-bpy)2(pbtcH)] (1 a) and [Co2(pbtcH)(phen)2] (2 a), respectively. The …
Vesicle formation in the membrane of onion cells (Allium cepa) during rapid osmotic dehydration
2009
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Optimization of osmotic dehydration in different plant cells has been investigated through the variation of parameters such as the nature of the sugar used, the concentration of osmotic solutions and the processing time. In micro-organisms such as the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the exposure of a cell to a slow increase in osmotic pressure preserves cell viability after rehydration, while sudden dehydration involves a lower rate of cell viability, which could be due to membrane vesiculation. The aim of this work is to study cytoplasmic vesicle formation in onion epidermal cells (Allium cepa) as a function of the kinetics of osmotic pressure variation in the external…
