Selective Excitation of Guided Waves into Bone Phantoms by a Time-Delayed Laser Diode Array

2012

We excite selectively the Ao and So plate mode into an acrylic bone phantom using a laser diode array. This is done by controlling the time delay between the signals driving the array elements. Selective mode generation is important because it can potentially increase the sensitivity of in vivo osteoporosis screening.

Photo-acoustic phase-delayed excitation of guided waves in coated bone phantoms

2013

Photo-acoustic skeletal quantitative ultrasound enables assessment of the fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW) propagating in bone. This mode, consistent with the F(1,1) tube mode can now be measured through a coating of soft tissue. Interference due to ultrasound propagation in the soft tissue surrounding the bone is reduced by using phase-delayed ultrasound excitation. Photo-acoustic phase-delayed excitation was done on five axisymmetric bone phantoms (1-5 mm wall thickness), coated by a 5 mm thick soft-tissue mimicking layer. A fiber head comprising a linear array of four optical fibers (400 μm diameter), illuminated by pulsed laser diodes (905 nm wavelength) generated ultrasound. Thi…

Dynamic Pattern Recognition in Sport by Means of Artificial Neural Networks

2008

Behavioural processes like those in sports, motor activities or rehabilitation are often the object of optimization methods. Such processes are often characterized by a complex structure. Measurements considering them may produce a huge amount of data. It is an interesting challenge not only to store these data, but also to transform them into useful information. Artificial Neural Networks turn out to be an appropriate tool to transform abstract numbers into informative patterns that help to understand complex behavioural phenomena. The contribution presents some basic ideas of neural network approaches and several examples of application. The aim is to give an impression of how neural meth…

Neural Networks in ECG Classification

2011

In this chapter, we review the vast field of application of artificial neural networks in cardiac pathology discrimination based on electrocardiographic signals. We discuss advantages and drawbacks of neural and adaptive systems in cardiovascular medicine and catch a glimpse of forthcoming developments in machine learning models for the real clinical environment. Some problems are identified in the learning tasks of beat detection, feature selection/extraction, and classification, and some proposals and suggestions are given to alleviate the problems of interpretability, overfitting, and adaptation. These have become important problems in recent years and will surely constitute the basis of…

Design environment for hardware generation of SLFF neural network topologies with ELM training capability

2015

Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is a noniterative training method suited for Single Layer Feed Forward Neural Networks (SLFF-NN). Typically, a hardware neural network is trained before implementation in order to avoid additional on-chip occupation, delay and performance degradation. However, ELM provides fixed-time learning capability and simplifies the process of re-training a neural network once implemented in hardware. This is an important issue in many applications where input data are continuously changing and a new training process must be launched very often, providing self-adaptation. This work describes a general SLFF-NN design environment to assist in the definition of neural netwo…

A new reference database for beta-delayed neutrons

2019

International audience; A new database containing all available experimental and evaluated β-delayed neutron data is presented in this paper. The database is the product of an international effort coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It comprises a microscopic section including all available experimental data on beta-decay half-lives, β-delayed neutron emission probabilities and spectra, as well as new systematics and global theoretical calculations for comparison. The beta-delayed neutron data for individual precursors have been benchmarked against available data on macroscopic properties such as total delayed-neutron yields and spectra, delayed-neutron decay curves and t…

New Beta-delayed Neutron Measurements in the Light-mass Fission Group

2014

A new accurate determination of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities from nuclei in the low mass region of the light fission group has been performed. The measurements were carried out using the BELEN 4π neutron counter at the IGISOL-JYFL mass separator in combination with a Penning trap. The new results significantly improve the uncertainties of neutron emission probabilities for {sup 91}Br, {sup 86}As, {sup 85}As, and {sup 85}Ge nuclei.

The Generalized Model for the Description of Prompt Neutrons in the Low-energy Fission

2013

Abstract The generalized model for the description of neutron emission from the spontaneous and neutron-induced fission in the energy interval up to 20 MeV is developed. For accurate calculations of nucleon composition and excitation energy of the fissioning nucleus at the scission point, the time-dependent statistical model including the pre-equilibrium neutron emission and nuclear friction effects is used. For each member of the compound nucleus ensemble at the scission point, the primary fission-fragment characteristics such as kinetic and excitation energies and yields are calculated using the scission-point fission model with nuclear shell and pairing effects, and based on the multimod…

Position-sensitive ion detection in precision Penning trap mass spectrometry

2009

A commercial, position-sensitive ion detector was used for the first time for the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron resonance detection technique in Penning trap mass spectrometry. In this work, the characteristics of the detector and its implementation in a Penning trap mass spectrometer will be presented. In addition, simulations and experimental studies concerning the observation of ions ejected from a Penning trap are described. This will allow for a precise monitoring of the state of ion motion in the trap.

Total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy of the β -delayed neutron emitters Br87 , Br88 , and Rb94

2017

We investigate the decay of 87,88Br and 94Rb using total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are β-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable βγ intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the β intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the β spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discrepancy between calculations and integral measurements of the photon component for 235U fission at cooling times in the r…
