La démocratie alimentaire comme enjeu de capacitation territoriale : Étude de cas dans le Tournugeois
2023
This article, through a case study from the Plateforme d'Observation des projets et stratégies urbaines (POPSU) program in Tournus, questions the notion of food democracy and its link with territorial capability. The observation and analysis of the dynamics of this participatory research allow us to enrich the concept of food democracy by crossing it with other theoretical perspectives (in particular the capability approach). They also highlight certain conditions for its effectiveness and raise the question of the relationship between food democracy and public policy. Finally, they invite researchers working on these issues to adopt an involved posture.
The Decline of the Spanish Fury
2015
Before the Spanish national team won the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, it had been said that the economic take-off and growing international relevance acquired by Spanish society since the restoration of democracy after the death of General Franco had not been reflected in Spanish football. Its main representative, the Spanish national football team did not manage to obtain significant victories in the most important international championships or develop a playing style that satisfied its followers. This fact strongly contrasted with the protagonist role and huge success achieved by the main Spanish football clubs at the European level. However, the victory of the Spanish national team in Eur…
Germany: Where Are We Going?
2012
Germany’s health policy, in the past, has tried to limit health expenditures by defining an overall health budget, by installing a DRG-system and by forcing patients to participate directly at health costs by demanding copayments. These measurements were somehow effective in keeping premiums stable but have led to resource allocation at the bedside and therefore on an implicit level. Yet, implicit-level decisions create ethical dilemmas for physicians as they not only have to deliver best medical care but shall also have cost in mind, are unjust because rationing criteria differ from one case to another, and create a general fear of legal uncertainty, in turn leading to defensive medicine w…

SOVIET PERIOD FILMS IN TODAY’S COPYRIGHT LAW: GERMAN AND BALTIC EXPERIENCE
2014
1. Introduction Within society, films (1) have several functions. They serve as mass media, still most essential today, apart from the internet. They are a form of artistic expression, and an economical factor. While its function as mass media has always been dominant since the creation of the first 'motion pictures' around 1900--and therefore served as an ideal propaganda tool for various regimes--the importance of the artistic and the economic aspect changed over time. In the Soviet Union, the value of films and movies as means of information, education and propaganda was realized from its earliest days. Mosfilm, founded in 1920, as the oldest European film studio and long being the large…
Ruch pokojowy w RFN (Friedensbewegung) w pierwszej połowie lat osiemdziesiątych XX wieku
2018
In the 1980s, the peace movement, which was mobilizing hundreds of thousands of people in protests against the double act passed by NATO in December 1979, was an integral element of the West-German political stage. It influenced the system of power and internal conflicts within the German Social Democracy (SPD), being the strongest opponent of the policy run by the government of Chancellor Schmidt. It also contributed to the formation of the Green Party and was the object of polemics within trade unions. Apart from that it provided a stimulus for debates of the ethical and religious character within the Catholic and Protestant Churches in the FRG. Lastly, it was the object of controversy an…
Globalization and Political Legitimacy in Western Europe
2018
Is there a legitimacy crisis in contemporary democracies? This question, asked since the beginning of the 1970s, has been currently undergoing a revival (Kriesi in Politische Vierteljahresschrift 54:609–638, 2013; Fuchs and Escher in The Legitimacy of Regional Integration in Europe and the Americas. Palgrave Macmillan: Houndsmill/Basingstoke, pp. 75–97, 2015; Merkel in Krise der Demokratie. Zum schwierigen Verhaltnis von Theorie und Empirie. Local Government Reforms in Latvia, 1990-2003: Transition to a Democratic Society
2004
This case study of Latvian local governments focuses on the qualitative aspects of reform legislation passed and implemented between 1990 and 2003 as the best available measures of changes made. Special attention is given to historical influences and inherited Soviet practices, the uncertain and conflicting value systems of reformers, and a gradual shift to concerns about the services provided. Power relationships are examined, together with the funding of local governments and minority relations. It is anticipated that in 2005 Latvia will adopt new elected regional development boards to work with the EU and other external institutions, leading to more democratic and cooperative modes of go…
