The Finnish case is in many ways illustrative of the complexities of democratisation after World War I. Finland found itself at the nexus of a Swedish constitutional tradition, legalism and ideological controversies adopted from Imperial Germany, the radicalised Russian Revolution, and Western parliamentary democracy. After having been a model for reformers demanding women’s suffrage, for instance, the country found itself in autumn 1918 going in the opposite direction to almost all other European countries. This article focuses on the contribution of social workers to the Portuguese democratic transition in the 1970s. Their involvement in urban social mobilizations and in the cooperative movement will offer a perspective on the participation of social workers alongside the Revolutionary process and how they, through engaging with social mobilization, grass-roots initiatives and socio-political activism deployed practices consistent with radical social work frames. Tutkimukseni tarkastelee Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putinin demokratiaretoriikkaa ja -käsitystä. Tutkimuksen aineistona ovat presidentti Putinin demokratiasanan sisältävät pu-heet aikaväliltä 31.12.1999–31.12.2006. Puheet olen jaotellut yleisön mukaan kahteen ryhmään: puheet venäläisille ja puheet ulkomaiselle yleisölle. Tämä jaottelu tarjoaa mie-lenkiintoisen näkökulman Putinin demokratiaretoriikan tarkasteluun ja siihen, kuinka Putin on puhuessaan tietoinen yleisöstään. In the aftermath of the First World War, constitutions of European states were widely democratized and parliamentarized, and similar turns were expected in international relations as a consequence of the creation of the League of Nations. This comparative analysis of Swedish and Finnish parliamentary debates on the League membership focusing on conceptualizations of the national versus international demonstrates how democratization and internationalization merged discursively.
