Management of demolition phases and related waste, in a building renovation project near Salerno, Italy
2020
Compliance with recent environmental regulations, the demolition phase, within the building replacement process, plays a decisive role, in terms of execution and management methods. The contribution addresses the problems related to the management of the site, in compliance with regulatory requirements for selective demolition and disposal of waste materials. Possible organisational and procedural solutions were investigated with particular reference to the phases of selective demolition (in compliance with Minimum Environmental Criteria), excavation, handling, treatment, recycling, and disposal of waste materials.
L'ANTICO CAMPANILE DELLA CATTEDRALE DI LECCE IN UN CONSULTO DEL 1574
2016
STATE OF PRACTICE IN THE C&DW SECTOR WHILE PURSUING CIRCULAR ECONOMY: THE ITALIAN RECYCLED MATERIALS MARKET IN ROAD ENGINEERING
2022
Construction and demolition waste (C&DW) is mainly produced during the construction, demolition, or renovation activities of engineering structures and it accounts for a remarkable amount of the total C&DW generated, as it is estimated to be around 30%. This proportion differs across countries belonging to different types of economies and tends to be greater in countries with developing economies reaching 74% of total annual production. There is a plethora of applications that C&DW can be used for under a circular economic model and in this research study a focus is being given in the utilization of C&DW within the pavement engineering sector, and more specifically, in the u…

Generation of Non-Classical States through QND-like Processes
2007
In the spirit of quantum nondemolition measurement we show that repeatedly measuring the atomic state of a trapped ion subjected to suitable vibronic couplings it is possible to extract interesting nonclassical states. The possibility of generating angular momentum Schrödinger cat is demonstrated.
The Reconstruction of Production and Storage Sites for Chemical Warfare Agents and Weapons from Both World Wars in the Context of Assessing Former Mu…
2017
This chapter begins by listing the quantities and sites of chemical agent production during both world wars and outlining the relative importance of these new weapons. Using the example of the production sites of World War II, the setting in which the construction and operation of these factories took place will be described, as well as the structure of the facilities. It will be shown that it was not only Fritz Haber’s former colleagues who made important contributions to the research of chemical warfare agents and their production, but that an important role was also played by students of his successor at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry. In order t…
Generation of Schrödinger Cats in Trapped Ions
2004
A quantum system in interaction with a repeatedly measured one is subjected to a non-unitary time evolution provoking the decay of some states in favor of the remaining ones. Under appropriate hypotheses the system may be addressed exactly toward a quantum state or pushed into a pre-selected finite-dimensional subspace. On the basis of such a general strategy, we propose to exploit suitable vibronic couplings in order to ‘extract’ trapped ion center of mass states of motion characterized by well defined absolute value of an angular momentum projection. In particular, since it implies the simultaneous presence of opposite angular momentum projections, we show the realizability of Schrödinger…
A Prioritisation Model Aiding for the Solution of Illegal Buildings Problem
2016
Can a quantum nondemolition measurement improve the sensitivity of an atomic magnetometer?
2004
Noise properties of an idealized atomic magnetometer that utilizes spin squeezing induced by a continuous quantum nondemolition measurement are considered. Such a magnetometer measures spin precession of $N$ atomic spins by detecting optical rotation of far-detuned light. Fundamental noise sources include the quantum projection noise and the photon shot-noise. For measurement times much shorter than the spin-relaxation time observed in the absence of light ($\tau_{\rm rel}$) divided by $\sqrt{N}$, the optimal sensitivity of the magnetometer scales as $N^{-3/4}$, so an advantage over the usual sensitivity scaling as $N^{-1/2}$ can be achieved. However, at longer measurement times, the optimi…
Quantum-state manipulation via quantum nondemolition measurements in a two-dimensional trapped ion
2001
The quantum nondemolition measurement is applied to a two-dimensional (2D) trapped-ion model in which two laser beams drive the corresponding vibrational motions and are carrier resonant with the two-level system of the ion. The information about the ionic vibrational energy can be detected by the occupation probability of the internal electronic level. The substantial difference of the 2D model from the one-dimensional one is that two orthogonal beams have a fixed phase shift instead of statistical independence. As a result, the atomic Rabi oscillation is involved in the coherent superposition of two sub-Rabi oscillations induced by the corresponding driving beams. This means that, in the …
