Pinus sylvestris L. is the predominant tree species used for wooden constructions in the Baltic area. Accordingly, the timber of Pinus is the most important object for investigation and dating carried out by dendrochronologists of the Baltic countries. However, the dating of historical Pinus is often challenging when the outer sapwood rings are missing in the wood samples. In Pinus, sapwood rings increase in number as the tree ages, and therefore calculating the approximate number of missing outer rings from a set range, a technique used for oak, is not possible. Late Quaternary tree-ring chronologies have been constructed using data collected from subfossil trees preserved under favourable conditions in lake sediments and peat deposits. Abstract Stable hydrogen isotope ratios of lignin methoxyl groups (δ2HLM) of wood have been shown to reflect climate-sensitive δ2H values of precipitation (δ2Hprecip). Abstract Three small stalagmites from Zoolithencave (southern Germany) show visible laminae, which consist of a clear and a brownish, pigmented layer pair. This potentially provides the opportunity to construct precise chronologies by counting annual laminae. The growth period of the three stalagmites was constrained by the 14C bomb peak in the youngest part of all three stalagmites and 14C-dating of a piece of charcoal in the consolidated base part of stalagmite Zoo-rez-2. These data suggest an age of AD 1970 for the top laminae and a lower age limit of AD 1973–1682 or AD 1735–1778. We here evaluated such potential changes by analyzing six tree-ring width (TRW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) chronologies from northern, central and southern boreal forests in Finland (60°N–69°N). Climatically controlled allocation to reproduction is a key mechanism by which climate influences tree growth and may explain lagged correlations between climate and growth. We used continent-wide datasets of tree-ring chronologies and annual reproductive effort in Fagus sylvatica from 1901 to 2015 to characterise relationships between climate, reproduction and growth. Results highlight that variable allocation to reproduction is a key factor for growth in this species, and that high reproductive effort ('mast years') is associated with stem growth reduction.
