High-frequency vibrational density of states of a disordered solid.

2013

We investigate the high-frequency behavior of the density of vibrational states in three-dimensional elasticity theory with spatially fluctuating elastic moduli. At frequencies well above the mobility edge, instanton solutions yield an exponentially decaying density of states. The instanton solutions describe excitations, which become localized due to the disorder-induced fluctuations, which lower the sound velocity in a finite region compared to its average value. The exponentially decaying density of states (known in electronic systems as the Lifshitz tail) is governed by the statistics of a fluctuating-elasticity landscape, capable of trapping the vibrational excitations.

Star orbits in metal clusters

1993

A possibility that classical five-point star orbits play a dominant role for shell structures of large metal clusters is investigated quantum mechanically. With a soft Woods-Saxon spherical potential a signature of the five-point star orbit is found in the level densities. Quantum numbers of degenerate levels in the soft Woods-Saxon potential differ by 2 and 5 in radial nodes and angular momenta, respectively. Unlike the experimental observation the peaks in the mass spectrum are not equally spaced as a function of N 1/3 . The self-consistent jellium model does not reproduce the degeneracy associated with the five-point star orbits. It is demonstrated that by covering high-density metal clu…

Generalized bloch equations for optical interactions in confined geometries

2005

By combining the field-susceptibility technique with the optical Bloch equations, a general formalism is developed for the investigation of molecular photophysical phenomena triggered by nanometer scale optical fields in the presence of complex environments. This formalism illustrate the influence of the illumination regime on the fluorescence signal emitted by a single molecule in a complex environment. In the saturated case, this signal is proportional to the optical local density of states, while it is proportional to the near-field intensity in the non-saturated case. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Localization-delocalization transition for disordered cubic harmonic lattices.

2012

We study numerically the disorder-induced localization-delocalization phase transitions that occur for mass and spring constant disorder in a three-dimensional cubic lattice with harmonic couplings. We show that, while the phase diagrams exhibit regions of stable and unstable waves, the universality of the transitions is the same for mass and spring constant disorder throughout all the phase boundaries. The combined value for the critical exponent of the localization lengths of $\nu = 1.550^{+0.020}_{-0.017}$ confirms the agreement with the universality class of the standard electronic Anderson model of localization. We further support our investigation with studies of the density of states…

Aluminum cluster anions: Photoelectron spectroscopy andab initiosimulations

2000

Atomic structures and geometries, electronic structure, and temperature-dependent photoelectron spectra of ${\mathrm{Al}}_{N}^{\ensuremath{-}} (N=19\ensuremath{-}102)$ clusters are studied both theoretically via ab initio local-density-functional simulations, and experimentally with high-resolution measurements. The use of a theoretically well-defined energy shift in conjunction with a generalized Koopmans' theorem enables direct comparisons between the calculated density of states and the experimental photoelectron spectrum. Such comparisons, using photoelectron spectra calculated for various relaxed cluster geometries, enables a determination of the optimal structures of the clusters. The…

Simultaneous observation of light localization and confinement in near-field optics

2001

We report on the observation, in direct space, of both light localization and confinement effects near lithographically designed structures. The sample is observed in the optical near-field zone with a Photon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (PSTM). Several patterns composed of a few periods of TiO2 dots, arranged as a hexagonal lattice, have been investigated. When the central dot of the pattern is removed, a phenomenon of light localization above the vacancy can be observed in the PSTM image. The occurrence of this phenomenon can be related to the variation of the electromagnetic local density of state.

Control of spontaneous emission of a single quantum emitter through a time-modulated photonic-band-gap environment

2017

We consider the spontaneous emission of a two-level quantum emitter, such as an atom or a quantum dot, in a modulated time-dependent environment with a photonic band gap. An example of such an environment is a dynamical photonic crystal or any other environment with a bandgap whose properties are modulated in time, in the effective mass approximation. After introducing our model of dynamical photonic crystal, we show that it allows new possibilities to control and tailor the physical features of the emitted radiation, specifically its frequency spectrum. In the weak coupling limit and in an adiabatic case, we obtain the emitted spectrum and we show the appearance of two lateral peaks due to…

Excited atomic energy levels in protactinium by resonance ionization spectroscopy

2018

We present high-resolution data of the single-excitation spectrum of protactinium, reaching slightly beyond the first-ionization threshold. Within this work, more than 1500 energy levels are recorded in different excitation energy ranges below $50\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}000\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Our experimental results show that the tabulated data in the literature severely underestimate the density of states particularly regarding the highly excited spectral range.

The boson peak

2013

The vibrational properties of glasses in the THz range differ very much from what is expected from Debye's elasticity theory: the density of states (DOS) deviates from Debye's ω2 law [the “boson peak” (BP)], the sound velocity shows a negative dispersion in the BP frequency regime and there is a strong increase in the sound attenuation near the BP frequency. These anomalies are related to an anomalous temperature dependence of the specific heat and thermal conductivity in the 10 K regime. An overview of the heterogeneous-elasticity theory is given, by means of which all these anomalies can be explained and shown to arise from the structural disorder, leading to spatial fluctuations of the s…

Dynamical Density-Matrix Renormalization Group for the Mott--Hubbard insulator in high dimensions

2004

We study the Hubbard model at half band-filling on a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number in the paramagnetic insulating phase at zero temperature. We use the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) mapping to a single-impurity Anderson model with a bath whose properties have to be determined self-consistently. For a controlled and systematic implementation of the self-consistency scheme we use the fixed-energy (FE) approach to the DMFT. In FE-DMFT the onset and the width of the Hubbard bands are adjusted self-consistently but the energies of the bath levels are kept fixed relatively to both band edges during the calculation of self-consistent hybridization strengths between impurity …
