University Students’ Approaches to Making the Most of Their Study Time

This article explores university students’ approaches to and positions with regard to making the most of their study time. The article discusses how various normative societal expectations around students’ use and management of time feature in their talk about how they organise their everyday lives. The research is based on thematic interviews (n = 28) that focused in detail on students’ day-to-day activities that were generated with students from two sets of generalist study fields in three regional Finnish universities. Distance learning introduced in almost all educational establishments in spring 2020 has raised interest among researchers how to deal with it in a more productive way. Thus, the goal of the research was to find out undergraduates’ views on distance learning of English grammar and the use of online revision materials in developing students’ independent study skills at a tertiary institution in Latvia. the research tool was a questionnaire consisting of open-ended and closed questions. Tā kā rakstu valodas pilnveide ir aktuāla tēma augstskolā, bija svarīgi uzzināt par vienaudžu atgriezeniskās saites īstenošanas efektivitāti darījumu vēstuļu apguvē. Uzmanība tika pievērsta lietišķai sarakstei angļu valodā, jo šim žanram ir svarīga loma cilvēku profesionālajā un ikdienas dzīvē. Lai sasniegtu izvirzīto mērķi, gadījuma izpēte tika izmantota kā galvenā pētniecības metode. The paper focuses on the ?unexpected pathways? of successful students with an immigrant background: these biographical routes, that seems socially impossible, raise theoretical issues around the individual-society, actor-structure relationship. In the last decades, the Italian University System has encountered several structural reforms aimed at making it more internationally competitive. Among them, the introduction of the University financial autonomy has triggered an “internal” competition among Universities to attract students from the entire country. Students’ enrollment at the first level has decreased significantly especially after the economic crisis of 2008, while the students’ migration from the South to the Central and Northern regions of the country has increased.
