Distributed intelligent management,of active networks

2003

This paper focuses on improving computer network management by the adoption of artificial intelligence techniques. A logical inference system has being devised to enable automated isolation, diagnosis, and even repair of network problems, thus enhancing the reliability, performance, and security of networks. We propose a distributed multi-agent architecture for network management, where a logical reasoner acts as an external managing entity capable of directing, coordinating, and stimulating actions in an active management architecture. The active networks technology represents the lower level layer which makes possible the deployment of code which implement teleo-reactive agents, distribut…

Deployment of the ATLAS High-Level Trigger

2006

The ATLAS combined test beam in the second half of 2004 saw the first deployment of the ATLAS High-Level Trigger (HLT). The next steps are deployment on the pre-series farms in the experimental area during 2005, commissioning and cosmics tests with the full detector in 2006 and collisions in 2007. This paper reviews the experience gained in the test beam, describes the current status and discusses the further enhancements to be made. We address issues related to the dataflow, integration of selection algorithms, testing, software distribution, installation and improvements.

Toward Unified Control of Networks of Switches and Sensors Through a Network Operating System

2018

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are an integral part of an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. In fact, a typical IoT service deployment considers an integrated network of switches and sensors (as well as actuators). In order to manage this heterogeneous network infrastructure, the use of software defined networking (SDN) technologies is anticipated. However, existing SDN-enabling technologies consider only isolated networks and there has been no concrete solution that treats the whole network in a unified way. In this paper, a network operating system is proposed as a way to address the above issue. Starting from the open network operating system, which currently supports only OpenFlow net…

A hybrid algorithm for planning public charging stations

2014

International audience; Green mobility solutions are receiving currently an enormous attention. Indeed, during last years, electric vehicles, being part of the field of the smart-grid, entered the automobile market of the whole world. This technology requires an effective deployment of charging stations of electric refill since the main problem in this system remains over the duration of refill of the batteries. In this work, we propose an optimized algorithm to locate electric charging stations. The main task of the algorithm is to find the best site of charging stations locations so as to minimize loss on the way to the charging station, as well as minimize investment cost, we take into a…

An outcome-based dynamic performance management approach to collaborative governance in crime control: insights from Malaysia

2019

The paper analyzes Malaysia’s experience in crime control. It offers insights on how a whole-of-government perspective, underpinned by a dynamic outcome-based performance management system, or DPM, supports governments in bringing about progress in crime reduction. Although not exhaustive of all factors contributing to crime control, the paper argues that DPM can make collaboration in designing and implementing policies for crime control more effective, by enabling policy-makers frame causal links between strategic resources, performance drivers and outcomes. The feedback-loops underlying the crime-control system’s behavior should be governed in a way that enables policy-makers to build up …

COOL, LCG Conditions Database for the LHC Experiments: Development and Deployment Status

2008

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, designed to collide opposing beams of protons or lead ions, started its operations in September 2008 at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. To process and analyze the huge amounts of data generated by the four experiments installed at different collision points along the LHC ring, a large distributed computing infrastructure has been set up, the LHC Computing Grid (LCG). The bulk of this data, referred to as ‘event data’, will record the signals left in the sub-detectors of the four LHC experiments by the passage of the particles generated in the collision …

How to support energy policy coordination? Findings from the Brazilian wind industry

2019

Abstract Despite a growing sense of urgency, the deployment of clean technologies has been affected by fragmentation of energy policy design and implementation. In some case, wicked policy issues around renewable energy infrastructure have delayed or even halted the uptake of renewables. To find possible answer to consistent policy design that involves public/private institutions of the electricity sector, the authors propose the adoption of a dynamic performance management approach to support the energy policy coordination.

Bluetooth Base Station Minimal Deployment for High Definition Positioning

2005

This paper discusses our approach to the problem of arranging a Bluetooth based positioning system capable of providing people coordinates in a given area with an accuracy as high as possible. Our strategy focuses on optimizing the disposition of a minimal number of available Bluetooth base stations in a subset of locations which are the only ones permitted by site characteristics and constraints. We used a genetic algorithm to this purpose and a layout chromosome whose best evolution suggested us how to deploy a minimal set of Bluetooth base stations. As a case study, we discuss our experiments and results which deal with a late middle age castle in Sicily where we carried out many trials.

An organisational approach to engineer emergence within holarchies

2010

An open issue in self-organisation is how to engineer emergent behaviours. This issue is also of interest for engineering holonic multi-agent systems as any level of a holarchy is dependant of the emergent behaviours of its sub-levels. In order to tackle this specific feature of holonic multi-agent systems, the capacity concept which abstracts a know-how from its concrete realisation is introduced. The use of this concept is illustrated in this paper through a case study using the ASPECS development process which enables the analysis, design, implementation and deployment of holonic multi-agent systems and integrates the capacity as a core concept of it is underlying metamodel, called capac…

IMPLEMENTING A VALUE ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR SERVICE INNOVATION IDEAS

2010

There has not been much discussion of how firms may assess the value of service innovation projects ex-ante in the extant research literature. This paper theoretically derives a value assessment tool for service innovation ideas called QSI (tool for pre-Qualification of Service Innovation projects). Thereafter QSI is implemented in three firms and it is explored to what degree the implementation improved managerial decision making on service innovation projects and investments. The findings indicated that the implementation of QSI had effects both in a portfolio management and a project management perspective. From a portfolio management point of view deployment of QSI improved the particip…
