The use of moss-bags technique for volcanic aerosols investigation on Mt. Etna (Italy)
2014
Explosive eruptions and volcanic passive degassing inject large quantities of gas and particles into the atmosphere that are ultimately deposited at the Earth’s surface through wet or dry deposition processes, affecting the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere. Mount Etna (Italy) is one of the most prodigious and persistent sources of gases and particles to the troposphere. Volcanic emissions were studied at Etna volcano by using moss-bags technique. Mosses (Sphagnum species) were exposed around the volcano at different distances from the active vents to evaluate the impact of its emissions into the atmosphere and in the local surrounding. The results confirmed the huge amount of s…
2008
The aim of this work is to study and analyse new thermochromic coatings for architectural glazing carried out using a novel hybrid technique called Aerosol Assisted and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (AA/AP CVD). This work was carried on at he University College London (UCL) – Chemistry Department – Christopher Ingold Laboratories – London (UK), under the supervision of the Prof. Ivan P. Parkin, with the collaboration of Dr. Clara Piccirillo and Dr. Russell Binions. The activities completed were the depositions of Gold-doped Vanadium (IV) Dioxide coatings and their chemical and physical analysis.
Recognizing the Emergent and Submerged Iceberg of the Celiac Disease: ITAMA Project-Global Strategy Protocol.
2022
Coeliac disease (CD) is frequently underdiagnosed with a consequent heavy burden in terms of morbidity and health care costs. Diagnosis of CD is based on the evaluation of symptoms and anti-transglutaminase antibodies IgA (TGA-IgA) levels, with values above a tenfold increase being the basis of the biopsy-free diagnostic approach suggested by present guidelines. This study showcased the largest screening project for CD carried out to date in school children (n=20,000) aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of minimally invasive finger prick point-of-care tests (POCT) which, combined with conventional celiac serology and the aid of an artificial intelligence-based system, may eliminate t…
Experimental data collection and modelling of dry deposition velocities for urban surfaces
2018
Dry deposition process is recognized as an important pathway among the removal processes of radioactive pollutants in atmosphere. There is not a unique and accepted theoretical description of involved dry deposition phenomena due to the complexity of the fluid-dynamic processes that influence the deposition flux, but also because there is a lack of experimental data covering all scenarios of interest. In this paper, that is the result of a National Research Program a research activity conducted by DEIM Department of the University of Palermo and ENEA and funded by the Italian Minister of Economic Development, a new schema for parameterization of particle dry deposition velocity on urban are…
Fabrication of nanostructured Ni-Co electrodes for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction in water-alkaline electrolyzer
2019
Template electrosynthesis is a facile and cheap approach for obtaining nanostructures with very high surface area. This fabrication method has been used to produce electrodes for different applications, among which the electrolysis. In previous works, Ni and IrO2 nanostructured electrodes were tested for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline solution, respectively, without and with addition of Pd nanoparticles. In this work, Ni-Co alloy electrodes were fabricated by the same method, starting from a bath containing a mixture of Ni and Co. After fabrication of the nanostructures and template dissolution, electrodes were characterized by EDS and SEM.…
