The impact of structural and functional characteristics of social relations as determinants of functional decline.

2004

Objectives This study examines whether aspects of social relations at baseline are related to functional decline at 5-year follow-up among nondisabled old men and women. Methods The investigation is based on baseline and follow-up data on 651 nondisabled 75-year-old persons in Jyvaskyla (Finland) and Glostrup (Denmark). The analyses are performed separately for men and women. Possible selection problems were considered by using three outcome measures: first, functional decline among the survivors (n = 425); second, functional decline, including death, assuming that death is part of a general decline pattern (n = 565); and third, mortality (n = 651). Social relations were measured at baselin…

Physical Activity and Related Factors Among Nursing Home Residents

1994

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine physical activity and the predictors of physical activity and exercise among nursing home residents. DESIGN: Population study. PARTICIPANTS: The sample (n = 190) was obtained by selecting every man and every second women from the entire nursing home population (n = 346) in the city of Jyvaskyla, central Finland, in autumn 1989. Information was eventually collected by interview from 158 persons (49 men and 109 women). SETTING: An in-home interview carried out among nursing home populations. MEASUREMENTS: Independent variables were the questions describing physical activity among nursing home populations. Dependent variables were the predict…

Factors related to carrying out everyday activities among elderly people aged 80

1994

The study was based on an epidemiological model in which performing activities of daily living (ADL) was the dependent variable. Variation in performing was explained by physical and mental health, and by physical performance. The population consisted of all 80-year-old residents (N = 291) of the city of Jyväskylä in central Finland; 90% of them agreed to take part in the interviews at home, while 72% took part in the laboratory examinations to determine health status and functional capacity. Difficulties in at least some PADL (Physical Activities of Daily Living) tasks were reported by 86.5% of the men, and 87.2% of the women; none said they could perform all IADL (Instrumental Activities …

Correlates of physical activity among depressed older people in six low-income and middle-income countries: A community-based cross-sectional study

2018

Objective Despite the benefits of physical activity (PA) in older people with depression, many do not comply with the International PA guidelines. Thus, we investigated what factors influence PA participation among 915 community-dwelling older adults (aged ≥65 years) with depression in 6 low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods Cross-sectional data were analyzed from the World Health Organization's Study on Global Ageing and Adult Health. The sample was restricted to those with DSM-IV depression or receiving depression treatment in the last 12 months. PA was assessed by the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Participants were dichotomized into low (ie, not meeting 150 mi…

Leisure-time physical activity and metabolic syndrome plus depressive symptoms in the FIN-D2D survey

2010

To examine the association between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and simultaneous presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and depressive symptoms (DS) based on a population-based FIN-D2D cross-sectional survey conducted in 2007.4500 randomly selected Finnish men and women aged 45-74 years were initially enrolled; 2868 (64%) attended a health examination. Participants with complete information (n=2778) were grouped into three LTPA categories: low, moderate and high. MetS was based on the National Cholesterol Education Program criteria and DS on the Beck Depression Inventory (≥10 points). The prevalence of MetS and DS were 53% and 15%, respectively; the prevalence of simultaneous MetS an…

Risk of falling and associated factors in older adults with a previous history of falls

2020

Falls in the elderly are one of the main geriatric syndromes and a clear indicator of fragility in the older adult population. This has serious consequences, leading to an increase in disability, institutionalization and death. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the prevalence of risk of falling and associated factors in a population of 213 non-institutionalised, able older adults with a history of falling in the previous year. We used the following assessment tools: Questionnaire of the WHO for the study of falls in the elderly, Geriatric Depression Scale and Tinetti’s Gait and Balance Assessment Tool. Age, using ambulatory assistive devices, polymedication, hospital …

A comparative study of factors related to carrying out physical activities of daily living (PADL) among 75-year-old men and women in two nordic local…

1997

The aim of this cross-sectional and cross-national study was to describe and compare the ability to carry out physical activities of daily living (PADL) and examine factors that might explain variation in this ability in two Nordic populations. Seven hundred and six men and women aged 75 from two populations (Glostrup, Denmark, and Jyväskylä, Finland) were interviewed and given a laboratory examination in 1989-90. The ability to carry out the PADL activities was studied by interview. Tests were given to determine depressive symptoms, cognitive capacity, and selected physical and sensory performance domains. Four different regression models (men and women in Jyväskylä and Glostrup) were used…

The Burden of Mental Disorders in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 1990-2013.

2017

The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) is witnessing an increase in chronic disorders, including mental illness. With ongoing unrest, this is expected to rise. This is the first study to quantify the burden of mental disorders in the EMR. We used data from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) 2013. DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) allow assessment of both premature mortality (years of life lost-YLLs) and nonfatal outcomes (years lived with disability-YLDs). DALYs are computed by adding YLLs and YLDs for each age-sex-country group. In 2013, mental disorders contributed to 5.6% of the total disease burden in the EMR (1894 DALYS/100,000 population): 2519 DALYS/100,000 (2590/100,000 m…

Lifetime leisure-time physical activity and the risk of depressive symptoms at the ages of 65–74years: The FIN-D2D survey

2011

To investigate the association between lifetime leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and depressive symptoms (DS) based on the population-based FIN-D2D cross-sectional survey conducted in 2007.Nine hundred twenty seven randomly selected Finnish men and women aged 65-74 years were included in this study. DS were determined with the Beck Depression Inventory (≥10 points), and lifetime historical LTPA frequency from age 15 years onwards was recalled retrospectively. The frequency of LTPA was highest at the ages of 15-24 years in both the DS present and not present groups (14.6 times per month). LTPA frequency was significantly lower among those with DS compared with those without DS at the age…

Association of tenacious goal pursuit and flexible goal adjustment with out-of-home mobility among community-dwelling older people

2018

Background As people age, functional losses may limit the potential to get outside the home and participate in desired activities and community life. Coping with age-related losses has been reported to be important for psychological well-being. Hitherto is not known whether active use of coping strategies also helps maintain out-of-home mobility. Aims We investigated how two coping strategies, tenacious goal pursuit (TGP; persistency in reaching one’s goals) and flexible goal adjustment (FGA; adjusting one’s goals to changed circumstances), are associated with life-space mobility and perceived autonomy in participation outdoors among community-dwelling older people. Methods Participants (n …
