Macroamylasaemia after treatment with hydroxyethyl starch

1977

After infusion of 500 ml of 6% hydroxyethyl starch into fifty-four patients an increase of serum amylase was observed which in fifty-one cases exceeded the upper limit of normal (190 U/l). In most cases serum amylase reached twice the basal value. Renal function influenced the duration of the increase in serum amylase, but not the maximum increase (201+/-15 U/l; mean+/-SEM). In patients with advanced renal failure (glomerular filtration rate (GFR) = 2-10 ml/min) serum amylase was still markedly elevated after 72 h (298+/-24 U/l; mean+/-SEM). In patients with normal renal function (GFR greater than 90 ml/min) serum amylase decreased to 183+/-40 U/l (mean+/-SEM) within 72 h without reaching b…

The Mainz Pouch II

1994

The Mainz pouch II procedure has proved to be a substantial modification of the classical technique of ureterosigmoidostomy at many institutions. To date we have used this procedure in 72 patients, including 15 children. Detubularization causes a low pressure and eliminates high-pressure contractions. Without the risk of compromising the blood supply the pouch is fixed at the promontory which reduces the risk of ureteral kinking and upper urinary tract dilatation as it is sometimes observed after ureterosigmoidostomy. The technique is not only indicated in cases of failed ureterosigmoidostomy but also for primary urinary diversion. Of the 72 patients operated, all are evaluable with a follo…

[Treatment of sensorineural hearing loss in acute viral otitis media with intratympanic dexamethasone and hyaluronic acid in comparison with intraven…

2006

Background: Intratympanic dexamethasone with hyaluronic acid has shown to be an effective treatment of the inner ear damage in sudden hearing loss and Meniere's disease. It is not known yet if the same applies to the toxic inner ear damage in acute viral otitis media. Patients: Retrospectively, 26 patients who suffered from acute viral otitis media with sensorineural hearing loss were examined with regard to the improvement of their inner ear hearing loss. Twelve patients were treated with intravenous therapy only, consisting of hydroxyethylstarch, pentoxifylline and prednisolone. Fourteen patients additionally received intratympanic injections, consisting of dexamethasone and hyaluronic ac…

Flapless application of enamel matrix derivative in periodontal retreatment: A multicentre randomized feasibility trial

2021

AIM To investigate the potential benefit of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) as adjunct to re-instrumentation of residual pockets persisting after steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS 44 adult patients participated in a multicentre feasibility randomized clinical trial with split-mouth design. They had presented at re-evaluation after initial non-surgical periodontal therapy (steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy) for generalized periodontitis with at least 2 teeth with residual probing pocket depths (PPD) ≥5 and ≤8 mm, with bleeding on probing (BOP). Two teeth with similar PPD were randomized to receive re-instrumentation either with (test) or without (control) adjunctiv…

Subepithelial connective tissue graft with or without enamel matrix derivative for the treatment of Miller class I and II gingival recessions: a cont…

2012

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the combination of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) with subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) plus coronally advanced flap (CAF) would improve the treatment outcomes of Miller class I and II gingival recessions when compared with the same technique (SCTG plus CAF) alone. Methods The study was designed as a randomized, parallel, controlled, double-blinded clinical trial. Forty-two patients were randomly assigned in the test group (SCTG plus EMD) and in the control group (SCTG). Patients had at least one gingival recession ≥ 2 mm. The clinical parameters were evaluated at baseline and at 14 d, 1, 3, 6 and 12 mo follow-up time poin…

Long-Term Results of Ileocecal Continent Urinary Diversion in Patients Treated With and Without Previous Pelvic Irradiation

2002

Patients who receive pelvic irradiation may require urinary diversion to manage complications resulting from progressive malignancy or radiotherapy. The choice of urinary diversion is an important issue and remains controversial. We characterized the long-term outcome of urinary diversion with a continent ileocecal reservoir in patients who received pelvic irradiation versus those who underwent urinary diversion without previous irradiation.Continent urinary diversion with an ileocecal reservoir (Mainz pouch 1) was performed in 36 irradiated patients in a 9-year period. Morbidity, mortality, the reoperative rate and parameters associated with the surgical procedure were determined at a medi…

Presence of aflatoxin M1 in pasteurized milk from Morocco

2007

Fifty four samples of pasteurized milk produced by five different dairies from Morocco were surveyed for the presence of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) using immunoaffinity columns and liquid chromatography coupled to fluorescence detection. Confirmation of AFM1 identity in positive samples was based on the formation of AFM1 hemi-acetal derivative (AFM2a) after derivatization with trifluoracetic acid. Analytical results showed that 88.8% of the samples were contaminated with AFM1; 7.4% being above the maximum level of 0.05 microg/L set by the Moroccan and European regulations for AFM1 in liquid milk. The incidence of AFM1 in milk from these dairies was 100, 92.3, 90, 83.3 and 77.7% respectively, with …

Synthesis and Characterization of a Novel Series of Agonist Compounds as Potential Radiopharmaceuticals for Imaging Dopamine D-2/3 Receptors in Their…

2014

Imaging of dopamine D2/3 receptors (D2/3R) can shed light on the nature of several neuropsychiatric disorders in which dysregulation of D2/3R signaling is involved. Agonist D2/3 tracers for PET/SPECT imaging are considered to be superior to antagonists because they are more sensitive to dopamine concentrations and may selectively label the high-affinity receptor state. Carbon-11-labeled D2/3R agonists have been developed, but these short-lived tracers can be used only in centers with a cyclotron. Here, we report the development of a series of novel D2R agonist compounds based on the 2-aminomethylchromane (AMC) scaffold that provides ample opportunities for the introduction of longer-lived […

Synthesis of 2-Prenylated Alkoxylated Benzopyrans by Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons Olefination with PPARα/γ Agonist Activity

2021

[Image: see text] We have synthesized series of 2-prenylated benzopyrans as analogues of the natural polycerasoidol, a dual PPARα/γ agonist with anti-inflammatory effects. The prenylated side chain consists of five or nine carbons with an α-alkoxy-α,β-unsaturated ester moiety. Prenylation was introduced via the Grignard reaction, followed by Johnson–Claisen rearrangement, and the α-alkoxy-α,β-unsaturated ester moiety was introduced by the Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons reaction. Synthetic derivatives showed high efficacy to activate both hPPARα and hPPARγ as dual PPARα/γ agonists. These prenylated benzopyrans emerge as lead compounds potentially useful for preventing cardiometabolic diseases.

AN EXTENDED KALMAN FILTER BASED TECHNIQUE FOR ON-LINE IDENTIFICATION OF UAS PARAMETERS.

2015

The present article deals with the identification,at the same time, of aircraft stability and control parameters taking into account dynamic damping derivatives. Such derivatives, due to the rate of change of the angle of attack, are usually neglected. So the damping characteristics of aircraft dynamics are attributed only on pitch rate derivatives. To cope with the dynamic effects of these derivatives, authors developed devoted procedures to estimate them. In the present paper, a complete model of aerodynamic coefficients has been tuned-up to identify simultaneously the whole set of derivatives. Besides, in spite of the employed reduced order model and/or decoupled dynamics, a six degrees o…
