Multioctave midinfrared supercontinuum generation in suspended-core chalcogenide fibers

An As2S3 fiber-based supercontinuum source that covers 3500 nm, extending from near visible to the midinfrared, is successfully reported by using a 200-fs-pulsed pump with nJ-level energy at 2.5 μm. The main features of our fiber-based source are two-fold. On the one hand, a low-loss As2S3 microstructured optical fiber has been fabricated, with typical attenuation below 2 dB/m in the 1-4 μm wavelength range. On the other hand, a 20-mm-long microstructured fiber sample is sufficient to enable a spectral broadening, spreading from 0.6 to 4.1 μm in a 40 dB dynamic range.

Synthesis and biological activities of a new class of heat shock protein 90 inhibitors, designed by energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening

The design through energy-based pharmacophore virtual screening has led to aminocyanopyridine derivatives as efficacious new inhibitors of Hsp90. The synthesized compounds showed a good affinity for the Hsp90 ATP binding site in the competitive binding assay. Moreover, they showed an excellent antiproliferative activity against a large number of human tumor cell lines. Further biological studies on the derivative with the higher EC50 confirmed its specific influence on the cellular pathways involving Hsp90.

A procedure to calculate the I–V characteristics of thin-film photovoltaic modules using an explicit rational form

Abstract Accurate models of the electrical behaviour of photovoltaic modules are effective tools for system design. One or two diode equivalent circuits have been widely used even though some mathematical difficulties were found dealing with implicit equations. In this paper, a new model based on a simple rational function, which does not contain any implicit exponential form, is presented. How self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules can generate complexity in the nanoscale

Abstract Given the importance of nanomaterials and nanostructures in modern technology, in the past decades much effort has been directed to set up efficient bottom up protocols for the piloted self-assembly of molecules. Optical gain, spontaneous and stimulated emission of surface plasmon polaritons in confined plasmonic waveguide

International audience; We develop a theoretical model to compute the local density of states in a confined plasmonic waveguide. Based on this model, we derive a simple formula with a clear physical interpretation for the lifetime modification of emitters embedded in the waveguide. The gain distribution within the active medium is then computed following the formalism developed in a recent work [Phys. Rev. B 78, 161401 (2008)], by taking rigorously into account the pump irradiance and emitters lifetime modifications in the system. We finally apply this formalism to describe gain–assisted propagation in a dielectric–loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide.

Oval fiber posts do not improve adaptation to oval-shaped canal walls.

Abstract Introduction Oval fiber posts attempt to provide better adaptation to root canals. The hypothesis of this study was that there are no differences in adaptation of oval and circular fiber posts to canal walls. Methods Posts were inserted in 20 canals; 10 were oval, and 10 were circular. The posts were cemented with composite cement. Coronal, middle, and apical sections were observed through a microscope.
