A case study of the coconut crab Birgus latro on Zanzibar highlights global threats and conservation solutions

Abstract The coconut crab Birgus latro, the largest terrestrial decapod, is under threat in most parts of its geographical range. Its life cycle involves two biomes (restricted terrestrial habitats near the coast, and salt water currents of the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans). Its dependence on coastal habitat means it is highly vulnerable to the habitat destruction that typically accompanies human population expansion along coastlines. Loss of habitats, naturalness and species diversity in Eurasian forest landscapes

Abstract Man has exploited land and forests in Western and Central Europe longer and more intensively than in Northern Europe and further east in Eurasia. We estimated forest naturalness and modelled expected biodiversity loss in seven different landscapes (2500 km2 each) in the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Poland, St. Petersburg (Western European Russia), Perm (Eastern European Russia), and Irkutsk (Central Siberia) across the distribution of Pinus sylvestris L. in Eurasia. Pressing challenges of recent decades, associated with agents that are aggressive towards humans – substances and radiation of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents – require scientific and technological responses. These responses lie in the areas of agent detection and protection from them. The mentioned bio destructive agents can be divided into 2 groups: (1) chemical and biochemical, and (2) radiative (leading to chemical destruction of biomass). In this study, we consider models of universal track nanosensors that are capable of producing a correlated electrical response to the flow of active agents.

Optimal timing of power line rights-of-ways management for the conservation of butterflies

Habitat loss, fragmentation, and degradation are the main threats to biodiversity. Human activities also create new habitat types that might fulfil ecological requirements for a variety of species. Do Overoptimistic Men Drive Creative Destruction? Evidence of Gendered Inventive Activity in Finland

This study extends the analysis of the "patenting gender gap" into design rights and utility model (UMs), which are alternative methods for protecting intellectual property (IP). The analysis is descriptive and uses registry data from the Finnish patent and registration office (PRH) covering the years 1982–2013. A persistent gender gap is found for all intellectual property rights (IPRs): women are inventors and designers only in a small share of filings. The gap has narrowed over time for national patent and design right filings but not for UM filings. Catastrophic Population Declines and Extinctions in Neotropical Harlequin Frogs (Bufonidae: Atelopus)1

We surveyed the population status of the Neotropical toad genus Atelopus, and document recent catastrophic declines that are more severe than previously reported for any amphibian genus. Of 113 species that have been described or are candidates for description, data indicate that in 42 species, population sizes have been reduced by at least half and only ten species have stable populations. The status of the remaining taxa is unknown. At least 30 species have been missing from all known localities for at least 8 yr and are feared extinct. In the tropics, rising sea surface temperatures are restructuring coral reef communities with sensitive species being lost.
