Transport coefficients of self-propelled particles: Reverse perturbations and transverse current correlations

The reverse perturbation method [Phys. Rev. E 59, 4894 (1999)] for shearing simple liquids and measuring their viscosity is extended to the Vicsek model (VM) of active particles [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 1226 (1995)] and its metric-free version. The sheared systems exhibit a phenomenon that is similar to the skin effect of an alternating electric current: Momentum that is fed into the boundaries of a layer decays mostly exponentially toward the center of the layer. It is shown how two transport coefficients, i.e., the shear viscosity $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and the momentum amplification coefficient $\ensuremath{\lambda}$, can be obtained by fitting this decay with an analytical solution of the hydr…

Dissociation energies of silver clusters Agn+, n=14, 15, 16, 18

A recently developed method to determine dissociation energies has been applied to positively charged silver clusters of size n=14, 15, 16 and 18. The method uses a combination of sequential and single step decays. It requires an uncalibrated thermometer which here is provided by the evaporation rate constants of the product clusters. For this purpose, earlier measurements [J. Chem. Phys. 57 (1998) 2786] are reanalyzed with the new method. The resulting dissociation energies are compared with the liquid drop values and the measured decay rate constants with expected rate constants from detailed balance theory.

Abstract Following the interesting arguments raised in a recent letter to the editor, about a paper recently published in this journal, the authors are happy to take a cue from them to clarify some facts that have not been sufficiently treated for space. After a description of the methods used, arguments regarding a blunt trauma on the right shoulder with consequent dislocation, the position of the hands on the pubis with brachial plexus injury, and the wrist nailing that caused retracted thumbs are discussed in detail.

Dynamic daylight simulations are very useful instruments in daylighting design process. They allow an in depth analysis of indoor daylight availability levels and define if they are adequate to perform a particular visual task. Their results can be used to design shading devices or lighting control systems and compare different technical solutions. Abstract The IT revolution, now more than ever, offers a cheaper and faster way to collect, store, transmit and process data. Detailed microdata of dates of death, migration and birth are already becoming available for general populations. In this paper, we develop within the family of period-based estimators a new, assumption-free estimator for constructing life tables. Two-dimensional filters for structured text

The paper introduces a method for defining filters for structured text. In the method, the text structure is originally defined by a grammar consisting of a set of productions. To describe the information interests, a two-dimensional template is first created interactively from the grammar to show the structure of a set of textual elements, at a chosen level of detail. The template depicts the hierarchical structure of the elements and indicates also optionality, alternatives, and iteration in the structure. Shaping women's agency through temporality in "The life and activity of the holy and blessed teacher Syncletica"

The present article attempts to discuss the relationship between two female characters, Thecla and Syncletica, against the wider theoretical background of temporality as it was perceived and construed through literary texts. Syncletica is portrayed as a ‘disciple’ of Thecla. However, while the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla appear to be pervaded with an eschatological expectation, the Life of Saint Syncletica shows signs of a different temporality. The detailed description of the whole life of Syncletica, with an emphasis on the course of illness, reveals a temporality more focused on the stages of life.
