Measurement of the $^{229}$Th isomer energy with a magnetic micro-calorimeter

We present a measurement of the low-energy (0--60$\,$keV) $\gamma$ ray spectrum produced in the $\alpha$-decay of $^{233}$U using a dedicated cryogenic magnetic micro-calorimeter. The energy resolution of $\sim$$10\,$eV, together with exceptional gain linearity, allow us to measure the energy of the low-lying isomeric state in $^{229}$Th using four complementary evaluation schemes. The most accurate scheme determines the $^{229}$Th isomer energy to be $8.10(17)\,$eV, corresponding to 153.1(37)$\,$nm, superseding in precision previous values based on $\gamma$ spectroscopy, and agreeing with a recent measurement based on internal conversion electrons. Spin dependence of {\eta} meson production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold

Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} pp{\eta} has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. First Results on the Scalar WIMP-Pion Coupling, Using the XENON1T Experiment

We present first results on the scalar coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to pions from 1 t yr of exposure with the XENON1T experiment. This interaction is generated when the WIMP couples to a virtual pion exchanged between the nucleons in a nucleus. In contrast to most nonrelativistic operators, these pion-exchange currents can be coherently enhanced by the total number of nucleons and therefore may dominate in scenarios where spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions are suppressed. Moreover, for natural values of the couplings, they dominate over the spin-dependent channel due to their coherence in the nucleus. Using the signal model of this new WIMP-pion channel, …
Position sensitive plastic scintillator for beta particle detection

A new segmented plastic scintillator detector Tuike has been developed for recoil-beta tagging experiments at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The detector consists of individual plastic scintillator bars arranged in two orthogonal layers, and the scintillation light is detected using silicon photomultipliers. Performance of the new detector was tested using fusion-evaporation reaction 40Ca(36Ar, pn)74Rb, and the results are discussed here. It was found that for beta particles seen in the main silicon detector, Tuike can tag high-energy beta particles with a 48(10)% efficiency. Radiation Tolerance Tests of Small-Sized CsI(Tl) Scintillators Coupled to Photodiodes

Radiation tolerance of small-sized CsI (Tl) crystals coupled to silicon photodiodes was studied by using protons. Irradiations up to the fluence of 1012 protons/cm2 were used. Degradation of light output by less than 5% was achieved.
Electric field manipulation in Al/CdTe/Pt detectors under optical perturbations

Abstract Al/CdTe/Pt detectors are very attractive devices for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, even though they suffer from polarization phenomena, which cause a progressive time degradation of the spectroscopic performance. In this work we investigated on the time dependence of the electric field of an Al/CdTe/Pt detector under optical perturbation by means of Pockels effect measurements. A tunable laser with wavelengths ranging within 700−1000 nm and a 940 nm light emitting diode (LED) were used. Large-angle production of charged pions with incident pion beams on nuclear targets

Measurements of the double-differential pi(+/-) production cross section in the range of momentum 100 <= p <= 800 MeV/c and angle 0.35 <=theta <= 2.15 rad using pi(+/-) beams incident on beryllium, aluminum, carbon, copper, tin, tantalum, and lead targets are presented. The data were taken with the large-acceptance hadron production (HARP) detector in the T9 beam line of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. The secondary pions were produced by beams in a momentum range from 3 to 12.9GeV/c hitting a solid target with a thickness of 5% of a nuclear interaction length. First Muon-Neutrino Disappearance Study with an Off-Axis Beam

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 × 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14(syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ → ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ(23)) = 0.98 and |Δm(2)(32)| = 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2. The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points (sin2 (2θ(23)), |Δm(2)(32)|) = (1.0, 3.1 × 10(−3) eV2), (0.84, …

The Leuven Isotope Separator On-Line (LISOL) facility at the Cyclotron Research Center (CRC) Louvain-la-Neuve; The laser ionization efficiency of the Leuven gas cell-based laser ion source was investigated under on- and off-line conditions using two distinctly different laser setups: a low-repetition rate dye laser system and a high-repetition rate Ti:sapphire laser system. The FURIOS laser ion source at IGISOL-4

Abstract The FURIOS laser ion source at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyvaskyla has been moved to a new location as a part of the IGISOL-4 facility. The laser ion source project had a high priority which allowed the transport of laser light to be optimized during the design phase. The laser resonators have been upgraded with a dual etalon configuration leading to greatly reduced laser linewidth. The transport efficiency of the dual-chamber gas cell has been determined using an alpha recoil source, with efficiencies ranging from a few percent in the beam interaction chamber to nearly 20% in the ionization chamber.
