Implementation of a two stage fully-blind self-adapted spectrum sensing algorithm
2017
In this paper, an experimental validation of a combined two-stage detector called 2EMC is carried out. The detector is proposed in [1]. The 2EMC is composed of energy detector as a primary stage and maximum-minimum eigenvalue detector as a secondary stage. The 2EMC outperforms the two individual detectors in terms of the probability of detection for the same probability of false alarm. Regarding the complexity measured in the sensing time, the 2EMC sensing time is bounded by the sensing times of the two individual detectors. 2EMC incorporates noise estimation that is used by the energy detector, which makes it fully-blind and self-adapted detector. The noise estimator performance is express…
Synchronization of the distributed readout frontend electronics of the Baby MIND detector
2017
Baby MIND is a new downstream muon range detector for the WGASCI experiment. This article discusses the distributed readout system and its timing requirements. The paper presents the design of the synchronization subsystem and the results of its test.
Neutrino probes of the nature of light dark matter
2011
Dark matter particles gravitationally trapped inside the Sun may annihilate into Standard Model particles, producing a flux of neutrinos. The prospects of detecting these neutrinos in future multi-\kton{} neutrino detectors designed for other physics searches are explored here. We study the capabilities of a 34/100 \kton{} liquid argon detector and a 100 \kton{} magnetized iron calorimeter detector. These detectors are expected to determine the energy and the direction of the incoming neutrino with unprecedented precision allowing for tests of the dark matter nature at very low dark matter masses, in the range of 5-50 GeV. By suppressing the atmospheric background with angular cuts, these t…

Fabry-Pérot Interferometer : construction, calibration and developement
2015
The work presented in this thesis concentrates on the construction and development of a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI). Resonance ionization spectroscopy (RIS) is a powerful technique for the extraction of nuclear structure, namely nuclear spins, moments and changes in mean-square charge radii. However, due to the pulsed nature of the laser, the technique may be limited by the laser linewidth to low resolution spectroscopy. This thesis presents the construction and characterization of a Fabry-Perot Interferometer in order to measure the laser linewidth and to calibrate the wavelength of a pulsed Ti:Sapphire laser in "Narrowband" mode (<1 GHz). The FPI has been directly utilized in the mea…
The LHCf experiment: modelling cosmic rays at LHC
2008
The LHCf experiment will be installed in 2007 on the LHC collider in the forward direction at 140 m. from the ATLAS interaction point. The purpose of LHCf is to precisely measure the pion production cross section near zero degrees through the measurement of the photons produced in neutral pion decay. This measurement is crucial for the simulation of the showers induced in the atmosphere by very high energy cosmic rays; the 14 TeV energy available in the center of mass frame corresponds in fact to an equivalent energy of 10(17) eV in the laboratory system. The paper focus on the proposed experiment and on the physics results that we expect from it
Measurement of the B0 - anti-B0 mixing using the average electric charge of hadron jets in Z0 decays
1994
From the data recorded with the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991-1992, 46 497 events were selected having a high-momentum muon in hadron jets. A fit to the average electric charge sum of the jets recoiling against a b-quark jet tagged by a high-PT muon results in an average mixing parameter of chiBAR = 0.144 +/- 0.014(stat.)+0.017/-0.011(syst.).
The DIRC detectors at the PANDA experiment
2015
PANDA is an experiment at the new FAIR facility at GSI and will, among other physics goals,\ud perform charmonium spectroscopy and search for gluonic excitations using high luminosity antiproton beams up to 15 GeV/c. A high performance particle identification system applying DIRC\ud detectors will allow pion/kaon separation up to 4 GeV/c. A Barrel DIRC with fused silica radiator bars or plates will surround the target at a radial distance of 48 cm and will cover a polar\ud angle range of 22 to 140 degrees; a novel Endcap Disk DIRC built of a segmented fused silica\ud disk of 210 cm diameter will be installed in the forward region to cover the polar angles from\ud 5 to 22 degrees. The design…
Determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and CP-violation in NO nu A with a second off-axis detector
2006
We consider a Super-NO nu A-like experimental configuration based on the use of two detectors in a long-baseline experiment as NO nu A. We take the far detector as in the present NO nu A proposal and add a second detector at a shorter baseline. The location of the second off-axis detector is chosen such that the ratio L/E is the same for both detectors, being L the baseline and E the neutrino energy. We consider liquid argon and water-Cerenkov techniques for the second off-axis detector and study, for different experimental setups, the detector mass required for the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy, for different values of theta(13). We also study the capabilities of such an exp…
