Spectroscopy of the Heaviest Elements

The addition of modern arrays of silicon and germanium detectors at the target and focal plane positions of recoil separators has led to a wealth of new spectroscopic data concerning the structure of heavy elements. A particular region of interest has been that of the deformed nuclei close to the N=152 subshell gap. Both detailed decay and in-beam spectroscopic studies have provided complementary data on the location and ordering of single-particle states for proton number in the region of Z=100 and neutron number N=152. Geo-neutrino results with Borexino

International audience; Borexino is a liquid scintillator detector primary designed to observe solar neutrinos. Due to its low background level as well as its position in a nuclear free country, Italy, Borexino is also sensitive to geo-neutrinos. Borexino is leading this interdisciplinary field of neutrino geoscience by studying electron antineutrinos which are emitted from the decay of radioactive isotopes present in the crust and the mantle of the Earth. With 2056 days of data taken between December 2007 and March 2015, Borexino observed 77 antineutrino candidates. If we assume a chondritic Th/U mass ratio of 3.9, the number of geo-neutrino events is found to be 23.7(+6.5) (-5.7)(stat) (+…
Event reconstruction algorithms for the ATLAS trigger

The ATLAS experiment under construction at CERN is due to begin operation at the end of 2007. The detector will record the results of proton-proton collisions at a centerof- mass energy of 14 TeV. The trigger is a three-tier system designed to identify in real-time potentially interesting events that are then saved for detailed offline analysis. The trigger system will select approximately 200 Hz of potentially interesting events out of the 40 MHz bunch-crossing rate (with 109 interactions per second at the nominal luminosity). Here we present a few significant results obtained in gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of gamma-ray emission from point-like sources (Crab Nebula, MRK 421), on the preliminary limit on the antiproton\\\/proton flux ratio, on the large-scale cosmic-ray anisotropy and on the proton-air cross-section. Omnibus experiment: CPT and CP violation with sterile neutrinos

The verification of the sterile neutrino hypothesis and, if confirmed, the determination of the relevant oscillation parameters is one of the goals of the neutrino physics in near future. We propose to search for the sterile neutrinos with a high statistics measurement utilizing the radioactive sources and oscillometric approach with large liquid scintillator detector like LENA, JUNO, or RENO-50. Our calculations indicate that such an experiment is realistic and could be performed in parallel to the main research plan for JUNO, LENA, or RENO-50. TileCal is the barrel hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment presently in an advanced state of installation and commissioning at the LHC accelerator. The complexity of the experiment, the number of electronics channels and the high rate of acquired events requires a detailed commissioning of the detector, during the installation phase of the experiment and in the early life of ATLAS, to verify the correct behaviour of the hardware and software systems. The ATLAS experiment is one of the multi-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, constructed to study elementary particle interactions in collisions of high-energy proton beams. Twelve different sub detectors as well as the common experimental infrastructure are controlled and monitored by the Detector Control System (DCS) using a highly distributed system of 140 server machines running the industrial SCADA product PVSS. The Farcos project: Femtoscope Array for Correlations and Femtoscopy

The Farcos project (Femtoscope Array for Correlations and Spectroscopy) is discussed in this contribution. It consists of a new detector array designed and constructed by Exochim-Chimera group at INFN of Catania and Laboratori Nazionali del Sud. The array is described in its design and scientific goals to address. Some of the first preliminary tests with radioactive sources and beams are also discussed, together with some highlights of future perspectives.
Challenges of the ATLAS Monte Carlo production during run 1 and beyond

In this paper we will review the ATLAS Monte Carlo production setup including the different production steps involved in full and fast detector simulation. A report on the Monte Carlo production campaigns during run 1 and long shutdown 1 will be presented, including details on various performance aspects. Important improvements in the work flow and software will be highlighted. Besides standard Monte Carlo production for data analyses at 7 and 8 TeV, the production accommodates for various specialised activities.
