Simulations on the mechanism of CNT bundle growth upon smooth and nanostructured Ni as well as θ-Al2O3 catalysts

2011

Abstract In the current study, we have performed ab initio DFT calculations on the gradually growing 2D periodic models of capped single-wall carbon nanotubes (SW CNTs) upon their perpendicular junctions with the Ni(111) substrate, in order to understand the peculiarities of the initial stage of their growth on either smooth or nanostructured catalytic particles. Appearance of the adsorbed carbon atoms upon the substrate follows from the dissociation of CVD hydrocarbon molecules, e.g., CH4: (CH4)ads → (CH)ads+3Hads and (CH)ads → Cads+Hads. (Since the effective growth of CNTs upon Ni nanoparticles occur inside the nanopores of amorphous alumina, we have also simulated analogous surface react…

Insight into the Mechanism of Action of Marine Cytotoxic Thiazinoquinones

2017

The electrochemical response of four natural cytotoxic thiazinoquinones isolated from the Aplidium species was studied using conventional solution-phase and solid-state techniques, based on the voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology. The interaction with O-2 and electrochemically generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) was electrochemically monitored. At the same time, a molecular modeling study including density functional theory (DFT) calculations was performed in order to analyze the conformational and electronic properties of the natural thiazinoquinones, as well as those of their reduced intermediates. The obtained electrochemical and computational results were analyzed and c…

Molecular and crystal structure of Ac-(Z)-ΔAbu-NMe2 and Ac-DL-Abu-NMe2 as compared to those of related molecules

2004

Abstract The molecular and crystal structures of two homologous amino acid derivatives: N-acetyl-α,β-dehydro-butyrine N´,N´-dimethylamide (1) and N-acetyl-DL-butyrine N´,N´-dimethylamide (2), have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Similar solid-state association of both compounds is observed; despite different molecular conformation, they form centrosymmetric dimers linked by the intermolecular N–H…O hydrogen bonds. The conformation of two crystallographically independent molecules of 1 [with torsion angles ϕ, ψ, χ 1 ≈ (–47°, 130°, 3°), respectively] is also characteristic of other related diamides – ΔAla, ΔPhe and ΔLeu – previously studied in the solid state. To analyse whether thi…

Structural and spectroscopic characterisation of 2-(2'-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrrole and its O-methyl derivative

2004

Abstract Density functional theory calculations on the tautomeric and conformational equilibria of 2-(2′-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrrole (HBP) and 2-(2′-methoxybenzoyl)pyrrole (MBP) were performed. Moreover, the experimental IR and UV spectra of the same compounds were recorded and compared with the theoretical data. The presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond in HBP can be related to the biological activities of some of its derivatives.

Structure ofD-ribonic acid-dimethyltin(IV) in coordinating solvents: an experimental and DFT119Sn NMR study

2006

We have investigated a newly synthesized complex of D-ribonic acid with dimethyltin(IV). The structure of the complex in solution has been characterized by means of 1 H, 13 C, and 119 Sn NMR and by DFT calculations. The comparison of experimental and computational results allowed the determination of the stable conformation in solution as well as the detection of a dimerization process. Moreover, evidence is given of active coordination of the metal by the solvent.

Molecular Features Behind Formation of α or β Co-Crystalline and Nanoporous-Crystalline Phases of PPO

2022

Guest molecular features determining the formation of α and β phases of poly(2-6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene) oxide (PPO) are explored by collecting literature data and adding many new film preparations, both by solution casting and by guest sorption in amorphous films. Independently of the considered preparation method, the α-form is favored by the hydrophobic and bulky guest molecules, while the hydrophilic and small guest molecules favor the β-form. Furthermore, molecular modeling studies indicate that the β-form inducer guests establish stronger dispersive interactions with the PPO units than the α-form inducer guests. Thus, the achievement of co-crystalline (and derived nanoporous crystalli…

Integrated experimental and theoretical study on the phase transition and photoluminescent properties of ZrO2:xTb3+ (x=1, 2, 4 and 8 mol %)

2021

Abstract Zirconia (ZrO2) has been intensively studied as an important ceramic material, and numerous technological applications have been found. The present work deals with synthesizing and characterizing the phase transition (cubic vs tetragonal) and photoluminescence emissions of ZrO2:xTb3+ (x = 1,2,4 and 8 mol%). The samples formed by the complex polymerization were thoroughly characterized for physicochemical properties such powder by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies. First-principle calculations at the density functional theory level were performed to complement and rationalize the experimental results. An energy transfer mechanism which promote…

Substituent effects in nitro derivatives of carbazoles investigated by comparison of low-temperature crystallographic studies with density functional…

2014

The crystal structure of 9H-carbazole, C12H9N, (I), has been redetermined at low temperature for use as a reference structure in a comparative study with the structures of 1-nitro-9H-carbazole, C12H8N2O2, (II), and 9-nitrocarbazole, C12H8N2O2, (III). The molecule of (I) has crystallographically imposed mirror symmetry (Z′ = 0.5). All three solid-state structures are slightly nonplanar, the dihedral angles between the planes of the arene and pyrrole rings ranging from 0.40 (7)° in (III) to 1.82 (18)° in (II). Nevertheless, a density functional theory (DFT) study predicts completely planar conformations for the isolated molecules. To estimate the influence of nitro-group substitution on aroma…

The substituent effect of π-electron delocalization in N-methylamino-nitropyridine derivatives: crystal structure and DFT calculations

2020

AbstractThe crystal and molecular structures of 3-(N-methylamino)-2-nitropyridine, 5-(N-methylamino)-2-nitropyridine and 2-(N-methylamino)-5-nitropyridine have been characterized by X-ray diffraction. To perform conformational analysis, the geometries of the compounds as well as their conformers and rotamers were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. The resulting data were used to analyze the π-electron delocalization effect in relation to the methylamino group rotation in ortho-, meta- and para-substitution positions. Quantitative aromaticity indices were calculated based on which we estimated the electronic structures of the analyzed compounds. The substituent effect of the met…

Magneto-structural correlations and DFT calculations in two rare tetranuclear copper(II)-clusters with doubly phenoxo and end-on azido bridges: Synth…

2010

International audience; By slightly changing the synthetic conditions, we have prepared two closely related linear tetranuclear CuII complexes with the symmetrical ONNO donor tetradentate Schiff-base ligand [H2L = (OH)C6H4(CH3)Cdouble bond; length as m-dashN(CH2)3Ndouble bond; length as m-dashC(CH3)C6H4(OH)] and with azide ions. These two distinctly coloured crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, CV, EPR spectra and variable temperature magnetic measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the green [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and the red [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2(H2O)2] (2) crystals show that the coordination environment o…
