Dundaga parish oronyms (hill names) of Livonian origin in Juris Plāķis’ Latvian toponym publication
2014
Each less known addition to the collection of authentic Livonian language materials is very valuable, and a small contribution can also be made by Juris Plāķis’ publication about Latvian, i.e., Courland toponyms, among which Livonian ones can be found as well. This collection includes toponyms collected by J. Plāķis himself, toponyms from Augusts Bīlenšteins’ onomastic materials, as well as toponyms which have been sent in to the Folklore depository by pupils from different parishes. This article goes through oronyms (hill names).Kokkuvõte. Ojārs Bušs: Dundaga kihelkonna liivi päritoluga oronüümid (mäenimed) Juris Plāķise läti toponüümide väljaandes. Towards a tanslatological study of multilinguism : translating the insertion of dialect within contemporary Italian narrative into French
2015
This PhD thesis examines Italian contemporary literary works (novels and short stories) in which dialect is used as a linguistic variety in combination with the national Italian idiom. The analysis is conducted through the works of four Italian writers, in which multilingualism is particularly significant: Andrea Camilleri, Salvatore Niffoi, Laura Pariani and Andrej Longo. Taking into account the complex linguistic situation of Italy, the thesis focuses on the translation of these works characterized by the co-existence of two different linguistic systems. Through an examination of the colourful mixture of linguistic varieties and the function of dialect in these contemporary texts, the the…
Roy Bhaskar’s Critical Realism and the Social Science of Marxian Economics
2018
This article supports claims that critical realism philosophy of science, as refounded in the hands of Roy Bhaskar, offers valuable knowledge enhancing insight into the advancement of Marx’s research program. However, it maintains that key principles set out by Bhaskar have not been adequately assimilated by those working with critical realism in the field of Marxist studies. When they are properly considered, they point to the necessity of reconstructing Marx’s corpus on a divergent basis from the conventional form it has assumed since the codification of “Marxism” by Karl Kautsky in the late nineteenth century as an overarching theory of history or historical materialism, wherein Marx’s e…
Dialektmerkmale des Deutschen in den sprachbiographischen Interviews der bilingualen Oberschlesier
2022
The article is based on language biographies which come from the interviews conducted as part of the German-Polish project LangGener with native inhabitants of the former German territories of today’s Poland. Out of 124 recordings, 20 linguistic biographical interviews with respondents from Upper Silesia were subjected to analysis where special attention was paid to the features of Silesian German dialects occurring in them. Even though the Silesian linguistic landscape is now considered by researchers to be a historical object of studies due to the shifting of borders after World War II and the accompanying population exchange, the article shows that the linguistic material currently obtai…
The public procurement of information systems: dialectics in requirements specification
2017
When acquiring information systems, public entities face a dilemma. On the one hand, they want to procure the system that best suits their needs, which often requires lengthy dialogues with vendors. At the same time, they are restricted by government regulations that mandate limited dialogue in the interests of transparency and equal opportunities for all vendors. To examine how public entities deal with this, we followed three procurement projects in Norway. We show that this dilemma manifests itself as a dialectic between the thesis of getting the system requirements right and the antithesis of strictly adhering to regulations. Public entities search for a resolution of this dialectic thr…
Amerikāņu angļu valodas lietvārdu lietojums citu angļu valodas variantu tekstos
2019
Karl-Otto Apel’s discourse ethics in dialogue with Charles Taylor’s hermeneutical ethics
2019
The aim of this paper is to highlight the relevance of the philosophical legacy of Karl-Otto Apel in light of the dialogue with th…

Il clitico soggetto di terza persona al in friulano centrale. Proposta per una nuova analisi
2018
This chapter discusses the syntactic properties of the subject clitici pronoun 'al' ('he.CL') in Central Friulian. The description is based on a comparison with Western Friulian, in which the clitic cluster 'a l' occurs. We show that the Central Friulian 'al' is syntactically different and should be analysed as a single clitic. In the cases in which 'al' does not occur (this happens when another clitic pronoun is present), or when it occurs in the form -l (only after negation: 'nol' 'not=he.CL) is due to phonology. Our proposal is also strengthened by considering data from aphasia: aphasic speakers of Central Friulian seem to conceive the 'al' as a single clitic.
Wenker, Georg (1852–1911)
2006
Georg Wenker (1852–1911) was the founder of a) dialect cartography and b) of the ‘indirect method’ in dialectology. From the very beginning (1877), his maps were empirically based on some 40 Standard German sentences, the so-called 40 ‘Wenker sentences,’ composed under prestructural aspects with regard to the historical grammar and, consequently, to the structural approach to dialects in the Kleiner Deutscher Sprachatlas (see Veith et al., 1984–1999). Their translation into local dialects was done by public school children assisted; their teachers assisted them and wrote the translations down (‘indirect method’). This method of exploring was different from the direct method used, e.g., for …
