Dialogicality in teaching process drama : three narratives, three frameworks
2018
This case study explores dialogicality in teaching process drama through the narratives and practices of three experienced drama teachers of the Open University. Dialogue is understood here in the context of ‘I-Thou’ attitude and as the phenomenon of heteroglossia. The analyses of the videotaped reflective interviews with the teachers and process dramas revealed a polyphonic picture of dialogicality in the teaching process, in which juxtapositions of communion and alterity are favoured. These findings may help drama teachers to become more conscious about the challenges and possibilities of generating a fluid and energised dialogicality in process drama. peerReviewed
Mitä ihmiset osaavat, kun he osaavat kieltä? : henkilökohtainen repertoaari ja sen multimodaalisuus
2020
The paper introduces a fresh perspective on individual language skills, or, language proficiency. Based on dialogical thinking, theory of distributed language and cognition and sociolinguistics, it will be argued that ’mental grammar’ is an inappropriate metaphor for describing an individuals’ language skills. To present an alternative view, language is here understood as ’resources’ that will be appropriated by individuals for developing a ’personal repertoire’. Focusing here on the role of embodiment and materiality, the personal repertoire is seen an assemblage of embodied skilled action that helps the learners to act upon different types of affordances in different material environments…
Language learning as dialogue and participation
2013
[Introduction] Today, we see how globalization with its cultural flows and technology with its new developments constantly creates new types of contexts and new kinds of language practices. Thus it would not be unreasonable to say that language itself is changing. Also, these large-scale changes create new environments for learning languages, and, these environments, potentially, will influence how we conceptualize learning itself. Thus, as the contexts and usages change, it is possible that the theoretical basis of language learning needs to be rethought. Further, this gives us a reason for rethinking the pedagogical practices of language education. This paper discusses the two central con…
Kielen oppijasta kielen osaajaksi
2013
The present article discusses the concepts of language learning and language use. When are learners engaged in learning and what is it that they should learn? At what point do they become legitimate users of language and stop thinking of themselves as learners? In layman's terms learning usually precedes language use: one first learns a language and can then use it. In linguistic research, particularly within the sociocultural approaches, it has recently been questioned whether a distinction between learning and using should be made at all. In the article, the definitions and boundaries pertaining to language learning and use are reflected on both from the point of view of the public and fr…
Dialogue in and as European heritage
2022
In this article, we scrutinize the use and institutionalization of the concept of ‘dialogue’ in the cultural politics of the European Union. Our focus is on how dialogue is understood in the context of the European Union’s flagship heritage action, the European Heritage Label, that aims to strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging to the Union. Since heritage has gained increasing prominence in the European Union international relations, we also discuss how ‘dialogue’ is institutionalized in the European Heritage Label as part of the European Union’s heritage diplomacy. We approach dialogue in the context of the European Heritage Label as a floating signifier; an ideal seldom explicitly defi…
Demokratia, relativismi ja totuuden jälkeinen aika
2020
Transformative Authorship Through Critical Dialogue : Concepts, Theory, and Practice
2021
This conceptual article deals with components and concepts of transformative learning, emphasizing the organization-level perspective on critical reflection. The discussion leans on the concept of transformative authorship and it is argued that it enables authoring processes through which professionals can recognize and recreate their routinized work practices. The aim of the research is to explore how professional experiences are integrated with reflexive, theoretical knowledge through critical dialogue. The authoring process of transformative authorship is illustrated with two complementary case studies from postgraduate health care education. In both cases, the learning tasks were desig…
Argumentation in the Context of High School Mathematics : Examining Dialogic Aspects of Argumentation
2022
In this chapter, I examine argumentation from the perspective of dialogic argumentation that highlights students’ engagement with each other’s ideas in the process of making mathematical claims and providing evidence to support them. I analyzed the provided data for students’ dialogic and justifying moves and investigated how the teacher supported argumentation. I found that the students’ dialogic moves included elaborating and commenting on peers’ ideas. Students’ justifying moves included one case of articulating reasoning and several instances of describing support. The teacher structured argumentation by sequencing it into steps so that each step established a new piece of information. …

Utilizing Informal Formative Assessment and Dialogicity During Reflections on Educational Dialogue in Mathematics
2022
In this study, educational dialogue is explored through informal formative assessment and dialogicity. We enhance the understanding of informal formative assessment and dialogicity by considering their relationship. Even though the interconnection of informal formative assessment and dialogicity is acknowledged, it has not been explicitly examined in research on educational dialogue. The data consists of video-stimulated joint reflections between mathematics student teachers and a teacher educator. The reflections were part of a teacher education program integrated in a mathematics pedagogic course. Conversational analysis was conducted to detect interactional patterns and indicators that e…
