Partial Recovery of Aliphatic Carboxylic Acids and Sodium Hydroxide from Hardwood Black Liquor by Electrodialysis

2014

The partial recovery of sodium as NaOH and sodium-free aliphatic carboxylic acids (formic and acetic acids together with various hydroxy carboxylic acids) from alkaline hardwood black liquor (BL, pH about 14) was studied by using electrodialysis (ED). In the first phase, the lignin was partly (about 59% of the initial lignin) precipitated from BL by carbonation (pH to 8.5). Furthermore, the carbonated liquor, mainly containing NaHCO3/Na2CO3 and Na salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids and lignin, was subjected to ED for recovering NaOH and sodium-free aliphatic acids. In the second phase, the carbonated BL was further acidified with H2SO4 (pH to about 2.5) for precipitating more lignin (about…

Molecular epidemiology and forensic genetics: application to a hepatitis C virus transmission event at a hemodialysis unit.

2002

Molecular phylogenetic analyses are frequently used in epidemiologic testing, although only occasionally in forensics. Their acceptability is hampered by a lack of statistical confidence in the conclusions. However, maximum likelihood testing provides a sound statistical framework for the testing of phylogenetic hypotheses relevant for forensic analysis. We present the results of applying this method to a small hepatitis C outbreak produced in a hospital hemodialysis unit that involved 6 patients. Polymerase chain reaction products from a 472-nt fragment of the E1-E2 region, including the hypervariable region, HVR-1, of the hepatitis C virus genome were cloned, and an average of 10 clones/p…

Central cholinergic functions in human amyloid precursor protein knock-in/presenilin-1 transgenic mice.

2004

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by amyloid peptide formation and deposition, neurofibrillary tangles, central cholinergic dysfunction, and dementia; however, the relationship between these parameters is not well understood. We studied the effect of amyloid peptide formation and deposition on central cholinergic function in knock-in mice carrying the human amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene with the Swedish/London double mutation (APP-SL mice) which were crossbred with transgenic mice overexpressing normal (PS1wt) or mutated (M146L; PS1mut) human presenilin-1. APP-SLxPS1mut mice had increased levels of Abeta peptides at 10 months of age and amyloid plaques at 14 months of age while AP…

Perceived stress in relation to quality of life and resilience in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis

2021

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease undergo various stages of therapeutic adaptation which involve lifestyle modifications, physical changes, and adjustment to renal replacement therapy. This process produces adaptive stress. Objective: To identify how resilience, health- related quality of life, and sociodemographic, clinical, and hemodialysis routine-related variables are related to perceived stress in patients with chronic kidney disease receiving hemodialysis for more than six months. Methods: This was a multicenter and cross-sectional study involving 144 patients from the Valencian Community (Spain). The assessment scales used for the study were the Perceived Stress Scale …

Validation of brain extracellular glycerol as an indicator of cellular membrane damage due to free radical activity after traumatic brain injury.

2008

Following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), increasing oxygen delivery to the brain has been advocated as a useful strategy to reverse mitochondrial dysfunction and improve neurological outcome. However, this might also promote overproduction of free radicals, responsible for lipid peroxidation and hence brain cell damage. Therefore, a method for monitoring this potential adverse effect in humans is desirable. Glycerol, an end product of phospholipid breakdown, easily detectable in the human brain by means of microdialysis, might represent a reliable indicator of free radical-induced cell membrane damage. Brain microdialysates were collected from 24 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats over a …

Comparison of results of combined liver-kidney transplantation vs. isolated liver transplantation

2013

Introduction. Combined liver-kidney transplantation (LKT) is the best therapeutic option for patients with end-stage liver and kidney disease. Objectives. To analyze baseline characteristics and clinical outcome of LKT compared to isolated liver transplantation (LT). Material and methods. The study included 16 LKT performed between 1998 and 2006 and 32 LT matched by age, sex, date and indication for transplantation. Demographic, pretransplant, post-transplant and survival variables were analyzed. Results. As planned by the study design, mean age, distribution by sex and indication for LT were similar between groups. The most common indication for LT was HCV- and/or alcohol-induced cirrhosis…

High-urgency kidney transplantation in the Eurotransplant Kidney Allocation System : success or waste of organs? The Eurotransplant 15-year all-centr…

2016

Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: In the Eurotransplant Kidney Allocation System (ETKAS), transplant candidates can be considered for high-urgency (HU) status in case of life-threatening inability to undergo renal replacement therapy. Data on the outcomes of HU transplantation are sparse and the benefit is controversial. METHODS: We systematically analysed data from 898 ET HU kidney transplant recipients from 61 transplant centres between 1996 and 2010 and investigated the 5-year patient and graft outcomes and differences between relevant subgroups. RESULTS: Kidney recipients with an HU status were younger (median 43 versus 55 years) and spent less time on the waiting list compared…
