Quality of Life in Patients on Peritoneal Dialysis: Clinical and Psychological Changes with Age and Duration of Treatment

2011

For nephrologists, the theme of the quality of life (QoL) of patients on dialysis, in relation to physical and psychological parameters, is of great interest. We examine the importance of psychological variable-related factors of age and duration of treatment. We studied the quality of life of 56 subjects on peritoneal dialysis prospectively at time 0 and time 1 (after six months). Patients were divided into four age groups and some clinical parameters were registered. We used three specific tests for psychological assessment. Our study suggests that peritoneal dialysis patients have a significantly worse quality of life, especially according to physical parameters, and this also considera…

Effects of exercise programs on physical function and activity levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis: a randomized controlled trial

2021

Background There are still many barriers when implementing exercise routines within daily dialysis care, even though benefits are well-known. Developing cost-effective strategies is necessary to overcome these barriers and include exercise as a complementary therapy in dialysis. Aim To compare several exercise programs on hemodialysis patient's functional capacity and health-related quality of life. Design This study was a 16-week follow-up, two-parallel group trial with balanced randomization. Setting Participants in this study belonged to a private hospitalized care center. Population Referred sample of 71 patients that suffered end-stage chronic kidney disease who underwent hemodialysis …

Oral manifestation and salivary changes in renal patients undergoing hemodialysis

2017

Background Salivary changes in hemodialysis patients may result in various oral manifestations. This research intended to determine oral manifestations and some salivary markers in hemodialysis patients. Material and Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 30 hemodialysis patients (the patient group) and 30 healthy individuals (the control group). Saliva urea and calcium levels and pH values of the participants were measured, and oral manifestations such as pale mucosa, xerostomia, halitosis, changes in the sense of taste, increased calculus formation, gingival bleeding, etc. were recorded in the information collection form. The data was analyzed using T-test and chi-square, and…

Modulation of hippocampal acetylcholine release after fimbria-fornix lesions and septal transplantation in rats

1997

Abstract Female Long–Evans rats sustained electrolytic lesions of the fimbria and the dorsal fornix causing a partial lesion of the septohippocampal pathway. Two weeks later, the rats received intra-hippocampal grafts of fetal septal cell suspensions. Nine to twelve months later, the release of acetylcholine (ACh) in the hippocampus of sham-operated, lesion-only and grafted rats was measured by microdialysis. The extent of cholinergic (re)innervation was determined by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) staining and densitometry. In both lesion-only and grafted rats, the ratio of ACh release to AChE staining intensity was increased as compared to sham-operated rats, indicating a loss of endogenous …

Impact of serotonin 2C receptor null mutation on physiology and behavior associated with nigrostriatal dopamine pathway function.

2009

The impact of serotonergic neurotransmission on brain dopaminergic pathways has substantial relevance to many neuropsychiatric disorders. A particularly prominent role has been ascribed to the inhibitory effects of serotonin 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) activation on physiology and behavior mediated by the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, particularly in the terminal region of the nucleus accumbens. The influence of this receptor subtype on functions mediated by the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway is less clear. Here we report that a null mutation eliminating expression of 5-HT2CRs produces marked alterations in the activity and functional output of this pathway. 5-HT2CR mutant mice displayed i…

A meta-analysis of the role of statins on renal outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease. Is the duration of therapy important?

2013

article i nfo Introduction: The efficacy of statin treatment in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate whether statins modulate renal function in patients with CKD. Methods: Data from Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of randomized controlled trials for years 1966-December 2012 were searched for appropriate studies. Results: Twenty trials with 6452 CKD subjects randomized to receive either statin or placebo were included. Statin therapy significantly influenced high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels in patients on or off dialysis (−0.28 mg/dl, 95%CI: −0.93 to −0.37; p b 0.05 and …

Dental considerations for the patient with renal disease

2011

Chronic renal disease (CRD) is the renal disease that manifests oral consequences most frequently, and it is defined as a progressive and irreversible decline in renal function associated with a reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The most frequent causes of CRD are diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension and glomerulonephritis. CRD is classified in 5 stages – from kidney damage with normal or increased GFR to renal failure. In order to quantify the CRD, renal function is measured using the GFR, which is estimated using creatinine clearance (CC). This CC is used for dose adjustment of drugs. In dental practice, the function of the kidneys can be measured indirectly through plasmatic …

Activity-dependent endogenous taurine release facilitates excitatory neurotransmission in the neocortical marginal zone of neonatal rats.

2014

In the developing cerebral cortex, the marginal zone (MZ), consisting of early-generated neurons such as Cajal-Retzius cells, plays an important role in cell migration and lamination. There is accumulating evidence of widespread excitatory neurotransmission mediated by γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the MZ. Cajal-Retzius cells express not only GABAA receptors but also α2/β subunits of glycine receptors, and exhibit glycine receptor-mediated depolarization due to high [Cl(-)]i. However, the physiological roles of glycine receptors and their endogenous agonists during neurotransmission in the MZ are yet to be elucidated. To address this question, we performed optical imaging from the MZ using …

Video-assisted two-stage basilic vein transposition for creation of brachio-basilic arteriovenous fistulae

2012

We report our experience in a mixed minimally-in- vasive technique for the two-stage transposition of basilic vein on a small series of eight patients. The operative tech- nique consisted of a modified endoscopic (1) approach for the two-stage transposition (2). The intervention was performed under Brachial Plexus Block (3).
