Assessment of spatial perception for a multi-layer volumetric display: the effect of exocentric and egocentric distance on relative depth judgements

2020

Three-dimensional images on multiple depth layers of the volumetric display provide the physiological depth cues which ensure the high precision of depth judgements at close viewing distances and enhance the user experience. However, the contribution of physiological cues declines with an increase of viewing distance (egocentric distance), and the human spatial perception varies depending on the inter-stimuli distance (exocentric distance). We conducted a psychophysical experiment to test the perception of three-dimensional images rendered on the volumetric display depending on exocentric and egocentric stimuli distance. The constant angular size visual stimuli were displayed on different d…

Cylindrical metal-coated optical fibre devices for filters and sensors

1996

Novel fibre-optic components suitable for sensor applications and wavelength filters are reported. The devices consist of a tapered fibre whose uniform waist has been coated with a thin layer of gold. The operation principle is the resonant excitation of a surface plasma mode of the metal film.

Dual-Diameter Laterals in Center-Pivot Irrigation System

2022

Design strategies to enhance modern irrigation practices, reduce energy consumption, and improve water use efficiency and crop yields are fundamental for sustainability. Concerning Center-Pivot Irrigation Systems, different design procedures aimed at optimizing water use efficiency have been proposed. Recently, following a gradually decreasing sprinkler spacing along the pivot lateral with constant diameter and sprinkler flow rate, a new design method providing a uniform water application rate has been introduced. However, no suggestions were given to design multiple-diameter laterals characterized by different values of the inside pipe diameter. In this paper, first the previous design pro…

Determination of biological characteristics of Tunisian Artemia salina populations

2012

In this study, Artemia salina cysts collected from four Tunisian hypersaline environments were characterized using biometrical, biological and biochemical descriptors. Biometrical analysis revealed that the mean diameter value ranged from 220.25 to 237.76 μm, for the untreated cysts, from 199 to 224.52 μm for decapsulated cysts and that the chorion thickness ranged from 6.62 to 10.58 μm. 48 h after hatching, Artemia from Sebkha El Meleh, Sebha Moknine, Sfax saltworks and Sahline saltworks presented a hatching percentage of 52.7%, 53.75%, 70.16% and 43.74%, respectively. The length of the freshly hatched instar I nauplii varied from 429 to 449.34 μm. The fatty acids profile showed that the n…

Cementing agents involved in the macro- and microaggregation of a Mediterranean shrubland soil under laboratory heating

2014

The heating effect on aggregation and cementing agents of a Mediterranean soil was studied in two fractions (macro- and microaggregates) in different environments: under Quercus coccifera soil (UQ), under Rosmarinus officinalis soil (UR) and between plants or bare soil (BS). Samples were heated under laboratory conditions at different temperatures (220, 380, 500, 750 and 1000. °C) to establish their effects on the studied soil properties by comparison with unheated control samples (25. °C). Increasing temperature treatments caused significant changes in most soil variables. In both soil fractions, the presence of vegetation contributed to increase of the soil organic matter (SOM) content, w…

Similar biomechanical properties of four tripled tendon graft models for ACL reconstruction

2021

Abstract Purpose The present study tested and compared the biomechanical properties of four different triplicate graft tendon techniques. Methods 32 tripled tendons from the common extensor muscle of bovine fingers were tested on a material testing machine, passing the end loop over a metal rod of a clevis connected to the load cell on the upper side, and fixing the lower end to a clamp. The samples were divided into four groups: (A) tripled with a free end sutured only to one of the two fixed bundles (B) tripled with a free end positioned between the two fixed strands and sutured to both (C) tripled with an S-shape and all the three strands sutured together at the upper and lower extremiti…

Effects of Age and Sex on Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter in Healthy Volunteers and Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury.

2020

The measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been reported as a non-invasive marker for intracranial pressure (ICP). Nevertheless, it is uncertain whether possible ONSD differences occur with age and sex in healthy and brain-injured populations. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sex and age on ONSD in healthy volunteers and patients with traumatic brain injury. We prospectively included 122 healthy adult volunteers (Galliera Hospital, Genova, Italy), and compared age/sex dependence of ONSD to 95 adult patients (Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, UK) with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) requiring intubation and invasive ICP monitoring. The two groups we…

Inverse association between type 2 diabetes and aortic root dimension in hypertensive patients

2017

Background Some data support the concept that aortic root diameter (ARD) in hypertension may be regarded as a marker of subclinical organ damage. The impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) on cardiac structure and function is known, although the relationship between DM and ARD is not clear. The aim of our study was to evaluate the influence of DM on ARD in hypertensive patients. Methods We enrolled 1693 hypertensive patients (aged 63.7 ± 9.6 years). The population was divided into two groups: the first one with DM (n = 747) and the second one without DM (n = 946). ARD was measured by echocardiography at level of Valsalva's sinuses using echocardiography M-mode tracings. It was considered a…

Impact of the pupil size – central optical zone diameter relationship on visual performance in aspheric multifocal contact lenses

2020

Abstract Purpose To determine the impact of different central optical zone diameters (COZDs), obtained from pupil size, on the visual performance of presbyopic subjects fitted with centre-distance simultaneous-image multifocal contact lenses (SIMCLs). Methods Thirty-two presbyopic volunteers, between 45–58 years of age, participated in this prospective, controlled, double-blind study. Subjects were fitted with 5 centre-distance SIMCLs of variable COZD, determined from the measurement of pupil size under photopic light conditions and corresponding to 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 % of pupil diameter. Subjects visual performance was evaluated through the measurement of distance, intermediate and nea…
