El color del camaleón: un testimonio valiente para la sociedad chilena

2017

The film El color del camaleón (2017) by Andrés Lübbert, which has great cinematic and content merits, can be considered as an important part of Chilean films on memory and post-memory. I focus on its contribution to Chilean memory and the reconstruction of the truth through the unveiling, in particular, of cruel methods of forced recruitment used by the dictatorship’s secret services. They were used as a further tool to instill terror in society, and as a way of submission and control of the population.

La Nostra Escola Comarcal: An Educational Cooperative in Defense of Democratic, Active and Valencian Pedagogy (Spain 1973)

2015

This chapter presents the story of La Nostra Escola Comarcal, a school founded in 1973 in the Valencia Region of Spain while the country was still under the Franco dictatorship. At the school’s inception, a group of parents who participated in some of the more innovative educational experiences were seeking to provide their sons and daughters with a more democratic, co-educational experience that was grounded in the local culture and language. Since this kind of education was not possible within the hierarchical structure of public schools, they organized under the cooperative model securing both, the full participation of parents in the school and a democratic organizational model. Educati…

1936. Frustrated Hopes: The Great Depression, the Second Republic and the Civil War

2020

The Great Depression was accompanied by the collapse of the monarchical regime and the establishment of a modern democracy with the Second Republic in April 1931. The new regime had to balance the importance of gaining domestic and international respectability (using orthodox fiscal and monetary policy) with efforts to shift towards a moderate protectionist policy, and enact land, labour and educational reforms. There were fierce confrontations from 1934 on, eventually culminating in a civil war in 1936. The consequences included a long-lasting impact on economic growth; autarky and interventionist policies; a huge loss of human capital; poverty and rising inequality; and a 40-year-long dic…

Coordinated Punishment and the Evolution of Cooperation

2015

In this paper, we analyze a team trust game with coordinated Q1 punishment of the allocator by investors and where there is also a final stage of peer punishment. We study the effect of punishment on the reward and the investment decisions, when the effectiveness and cost of coordinated punishment depend on the number of investors adhering to this activity. The interaction takes place in an overlapping-generations model with heterogeneous preferences and incomplete information. The only long-run outcomes of the dynamics are either a fully cooperative culture (FCC) with high levels of trust and cooperation and fair returns or a non-cooperative culture with no cooperation at all. The basin of…

"Facta non verba" : an experiment on pledging and giving

2015

International audience; We design an experiment to investigate whether asking people to state how much they will donate to a charity (i.e., to pledge) increases their actual donation. Individuals’ endowment is either certain or a random variable. We study different types of pledges, namely, private, public and irrevocable, which differ in terms of the cost to the individual for not keeping the promise. We show that in absence of endowment uncertainty, private and public pledges are associated with lower donations as compared to donations in the no-pledge case: private pledges slightly reduce donations and public pledges reduce them more significantly. Donations increase with uncertainty (in…

Trust and punishment

2021

Abstract This paper explores the impact of institutions on the evolution of preferences (culture) and on economic outcomes. Punishment institutions determine the capacity and the individual cost of punishing opportunistic behavior, while preferences are endogenous and can be influenced by a cultural transmission process that is conditioned by the existing punishment institutions. We investigate the interaction and evolution between the preferences for reciprocity or rewarding of the allocator and the preferences to punish hostile behaviour by the investor in a trust game with a costly punishment phase. Our main result provides a rationale for the existence of a strong positive relationship …

Unravelling environment and politics in the Spanish press. From Franco’s dictatorship to democracy

2017

The 1970s and 1980s were key years for the consolidation of environmentalism and environmental communication. In Spain, the special political situation during General Franco’s military dictatorship conditioned the coverage of environmental issues, as did the transition to democracy. The Albufera Natural Park (Valencia, Spain) was a particularly significant case in this context, since it was involved in one of the first environmental protests to protect a natural area covered by Spanish media. In this paper, we study opinion articles published in the Valencian newspapers Las Provincias and Levante, in order to analyze the evolution of the environmental discourse in Spanish society from the d…

The paradox of (Inter)net neutrality: An experiment on ex-ante antitrust regulation✰

2022

Abstract Net neutrality has been the most relevant and heavily debated Internet regulation policy of the last decade. Net neutrality aims to prohibit discrimination between data packages in terms of content, origin, destination, or type of equipment used. However, the Big Tech companies, sheltered by the net neutrality policy, have flourished. They now have the power to exclude minor companies, and therefore their contents, from the Internet market in de facto defiance of the net neutrality principle. Academic results regarding this net neutrality paradox are still ambiguous. To represent the current Internet market distortions and analyze a potential tool to adjust and strengthen the net n…

Paradojas de la historia, paradojas de la historiografía. Las peripecias del fascismo español

2001

The author argues here the importance of avoiding the paradigm of backwardness in analyzing the evolution and vicissitudes of Spanish fascism. Like in other European countries, the fin-de-siècle cultural crisis saw the emergence of a new nationalist political culture, which would deeply influence Spanish fascism in the future. After the failure of the fascist movement during the Second Republic, explicable fundamentally in political terms, there followed its conversion into a mass party during the Civil War and its immediate subordination to the State, to which it nonetheless represented a fundamental support. Franco’s regime, as a fascistic —not fascist— dictatorship, may be seen as a pecu…
