Zinc isotopes in Late Pleistocene fossil teeth from a Southeast Asian cave setting preserve paleodietary information

Significance Dietary habits, especially meat consumption, represent a key aspect in the behavior and evolution of fossil hominin species. Here, we explore zinc (Zn) isotope ratios in tooth enamel of fossil mammals. We show discrimination between different trophic levels and demonstrate that Zn isotopes could prove useful in paleodietary studies of fossil hominin, or other mammalian species, to assess their consumption of animal versus plant resources. We also demonstrate the high preservation potential of pristine diet-related Zn isotope ratios, even under tropical conditions with poor collagen preservation, such as the studied depositional context in Southeast Asia. <p style="text-align: justify;">The aim of the present work was to underline the existence of a sensory space relevant to Sciaccarello wines. Twenty-eight wines were selected for viticultural and enological characteristics, using 1/2 Sciaccarello/Non- Sciaccarello ratio. Sensory analyses (orthonasal then overall perceptions) were performed with a panel composed of seventeen judges. All of the judges were experienced in Sciaccarello wines knowledge. International audience; Free-Comment (FC) and Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) provide a contingency table containing citation counts of descriptors by products. The analyses performed on this table are most often related to the chi-square statistic. However, such practices are not well suited because they consider experimental units as being the citations (one descriptor for one product by one subject) while the evaluations (vector of citations for one product by one subject) should be considered instead. Oxysterols are formed in foods during processing and storage, having an impact on the nutritional profile besides being associated to the development of diverse chronic and degenerative diseases. This review provides an overview on recent information and knowledge gaps on oxysterol formation and absorption from foods. Their contents should be monitored based on dietary habits, in order to have more realistic data available and to expand the currently limited daily intake data.
