The Dietary Inflammatory Index and asthma burden in children: A latent class analysis

Introduction: Unbalanced dietary intake has been increasingly recognized as an important modifiable risk factor for asthma. In this study, we assessed whether a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with higher asthma burden in three steps: (1) identification of asthma latent classes (LC) based on symptoms, indoor exposures, and pulmonary function; (2) identification of risk factors associated with LC membership; and (3) estimation of the probabilities of LC membership with variation in DII. Leisure-time physical activity and intra-abdominal fat in young adulthood: A monozygotic co-twin control study

Objective To investigate differences in abdominal fat compartments between young adult monozygotic twin pairs discordant for leisure-time physical activity. Methods Ten young adult male monozygotic twin pairs (age range 32-36 years) discordant for leisure-time physical activity during the past 3 years were systematically selected from a population-based Finnish twin cohort. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the clinical hepatic expression of metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is around 20-30%, and with a rapid increase in the metabolic risk factors in the general population, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become the most common cause of liver disease worldwide. Effect of different antioxidants in experimental alcoholic optic neuropathy

Purpose To establish the possible beneficial effects of three synthetic antioxidants: S-adenosil-L-methionine (SAMe), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and Ebselen in optic nerve damage following chronic ethanol feeding in adult rats. Methods Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats (five groups of four animals each) were fed a liquid, ethanol-containing diet with littermates given isocaloric amounts of ethanol-free diet serving as controls. Effects of chronic alcohol consumption on enzyme activities and active methionine absorption in the small intestine of pregnant rats.

The present study evaluates the effect of chronic alcohol intake on the intestinal transport of methionine during pregnancy. For this purpose, we have used an in vitro technique that allows measurement of the unidirectional influx of the amino acids across the brush-border membrane of the rat mid-jejunum, and the basolateral membrane enzyme Na+, K+-ATPase was also evaluated in the duodenum and jejunum.
