[Protein intake in community-dwelling postmenopausal women and its relationship with sarcopenia].
2021
Objectives: the general aging of the population is related to the increase in the prevalence of sarcopenic disease; especially among older women, this pathology is closely related to nutrition and specifically to protein consumption in older adults. The aim of our study was to evaluate the possible relationship between a low protein intake and a higher prevalence of sarcopenic disease, a worse dietary pattern, and lower physical performance in postmenopausal women living in the community. Material and methods: the study was carried out in a total of 164 independent women over 65 years of age, recruited from a municipal social center in Valencia (Benimaclet). The presence of sarcopenic patho…
Guarana seed extracts as a useful strategy to extend the shelf life of pork patties: UHPLC-ESI/QTOF phenolic profile and impact on microbial inactiva…
2018
Abstract The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of guarana seed extracts (GSE) added to pork patties were evaluated for 18 days storage at 2 ± 1 °C. Five treatments were prepared: i) without natural antioxidant [control (negative control)], ii) with BHT at 200 mg/kg (positive control), and iii) with three different concentrations: 250 mg/kg (guarana seed low dose-GSL), 500 mg/kg (guarana seed medium dose-GSM) and 1000 mg/kg (guarana seed high dose-GSH) of guarana extracts, respectively. The pH, instrumental colour (CIE L*, a*, b*), total viable counts (TVC), Pseudomonas spp. counts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and carbonyl co…
The cockroach Blattella germanica obtains nitrogen from uric acid through a metabolic pathway shared with its bacterial endosymbiont.
2014
Uric acid storedin the fat bodyof cockroaches is a nitrogen reservoirmobilized in times of scarcity. The discovery of urease in Blattabacterium cuenoti, the primary endosymbiont of cockroaches, suggests that the endosymbiont may participate in cockroach nitrogen economy. However, bacterial urease may only be one piece in the entire nitrogen recycling process from insect uric acid. Thus, in addition to the uricolytic pathway to urea, there must be glutamine synthetase assimilating the released ammonia by the urease reaction to enable the stored nitrogen to be metabolically usable. None of the Blattabacterium genomes sequenced to date possess genes encoding for those enzymes. To test the host…
Nutrient intakes of children aged 1-2 years as a function of milk consumption, cows' milk or growing-up milk.
2012
AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the nutritional adequacy of diets in early childhood as a function of milk intake, cows’ milk (CM) or growing-up milk (GUM).DesignFrom a cross-sectional food consumption survey, two groups of children aged 1–2 years were defined: Group CM fed exclusively on CM ≥ 250 ml/d and Group GUM fed on GUM ≥ 250 ml/d. Proportions of children at risk of nutrient excess or insufficiency were estimated relative to the French Recommended Daily Allowances, Estimated Average Requirements or Adequate Intakes.SettingParents participating in the survey were recruited from all regions of France by a polling organization. Distribution was adjusted to that of the French population.Sub…
Use of dietary supplements and anabolic-androgenic steroids among Finnish adolescents in 1991-2005.
2009
Background : The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence, trends and associated factors of dietary supplements (DS) and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use among Finnish adolescents. Methods: The sample comprised 30 511 adolescents aged 12–18 years, of which 22 519 (74%) answered a questionnaire. We also studied associations between 14 socioeconomic, health and health behavioural variables and DS and AAS use by logistic regression. Results: The proportion of respondents using DS was 45% during the past year and it increased linearly by age. Vitamins (37%) and herbal products (13%) were the most common DSs. In 1991, 9% of the boys aged 16–18 years reported protein use, while the f…
Effects of polymorphisms in endothelial nitric oxide synthase and folate metabolizing genes on the concentration of serum nitrate, folate, and plasma…
2015
Abstract Objectives A number of studies have explored the effects of dietary nitrate on human health. Nitrate in the blood can be recycled to nitric oxide, which is an essential mediator involved in many important biochemical mechanisms. Nitric oxide is also formed in the body from l -arginine by nitric oxide synthase. The aim of this study was to investigate whether genetic polymorphisms in endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and genes involved in folate metabolism affect the concentration of serum nitrate, serum folate, and plasma total homocysteine in healthy individuals after folic acid supplementation. Methods In a randomized double-blind, crossover study, participants were given …

Cyclic AMP-dependent and independent stimulations of ovarian steroidogenesis by brain factors in the blowfly, Phormia regina.
2000
0303-7207 doi: DOI: 10.1016/S0303-7207(00)00312-9; The involvement of cyclic-AMP (cAMP) as a potential second messenger in the neurohormonal control of ovarian steroidogenesis was investigated in the adult female blowfly Phormia regina. Individual measurements of ovarian cAMP concentrations and of ovarian biosynthesis of ecdysteroids, stimulated after a protein meal, demonstrated that steroidogenesis is preceded by a peak of cAMP in the ovaries. In vitro, ovarian steroidogenesis was stimulated by cell-permeable analogues of cAMP and by forskolin. Crude brain extracts were also able to elicit a rise of cAMP in the ovaries in vitro and the secretion of ecdysteroids into the medium: such extra…
Elevated Expression of Liver γ-Cystathionase Is Required for the Maintenance of Lactation in Rats
1999
Liver gamma-cystathionase activity increases in rats during lactation; its inhibition due to propargylglycine is followed by a significant decrease in lactation. This is reversible by N-acetylcysteine administration. To study the role of liver gamma-cystathionase and the intertissue flux of glutathione during lactation, we used lactating and virgin rats fed liquid diets. Virgin rats were divided into two groups as follows: one group was fed daily a diet containing the same amount of protein that was consumed the previous day by lactating rats (high protein diet-fed rats); the other virgin group was fed the normal liquid diet (control). The expression and activity of liver gamma-cystathionas…
Nutrition and physical activity in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia: systematic review
2017
Summary This systematic review summarizes the effect of\ud combined exercise and nutrition intervention on muscle mass\ud and muscle function. A total of 37 RCTs were identified.\ud Results indicate that physical exercise has a positive impact\ud on muscle mass and muscle function in subjects aged 65 years\ud and older. However, any interactive effect of dietary supplementation\ud appears to be limited.\ud Introduction In 2013, Denison et al. conducted a systematic\ud review including 17 randomized controlled trials\ud (RCTs) to explore the effect of combined exercise and\ud nutrition intervention to improve muscle mass, muscle\ud strength, or physical performance in older people.\ud They c…
