''Sex Differences In Ultra-triathlon Performance At Increasing Race Distance''

2013

Ruest, Christoph Alexander | Knechtle, Beat | Knechtle, Patrizia | Rosemann, Thomas | Lepers, Romuald; International audience; ''It has been argued that women should be able to outrun men in ultra-endurance distances. The present study investigated the sex difference in overall race times and split times between elite female and male Ironman triathletes competing in Ironman Hawaii (3.8 km swimming, 180 km cycling, and 42.195 km running) and Double Iron ultra-triathletes (7.6 km swimming, 360 km cycling, and 84.4 km running). Data from 20,638 athletes, including 5,163 women and 15,475 men competing in Ironman Hawaii and from 143 women and 1,252 men competing in Double Iron ultra-triathlon ra…

Bolton's intermaxillary tooth size ratios among Iranian schoolchildren.

2010

Objectives: The aims of the present study were to determine anterior and total tooth-width ratios in a representative Iranian sample in Tabriz city and compare them with the Bolton standards. Study design: A total of 54 Iranian schoolchildren (12-14 years old) in Tabriz were examined. Alginate impressions were taken for subjects and poured by the dental stone. The mesiodistal widths of the teeth were measured using a digital caliper. The overall and anterior Bolton's intermaxillary tooth size ratios for each model pair was calculated. Results: There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) between the right and left sides of the dental arch and a symmetry in size exists. There were no sig…

Implicit Learning in Children Is Not Related to Age: Evidence from Drawing Behavior

2000

Three experiments are reported on implicit learning in 432 children between the ages of 4 and 10 years, using a new paradigm ("the neutral parameter procedure") based on drawing behavior. The first two experiments demonstrated that children modified their drawing behavior following specially devised practice in such a way that these modifications could not be viewed as the result of deliberate adaptive strategies. The third experiment showed that these behavioral modifications lasted for at least 1 hr after the training phase. No age-related differences appeared in the experiments. A comparison of children's data with similar adults' data also failed to reveal any age differences. These res…

Rate of power development of the knee extensors across the adult life span: A cross-sectional study in 1387 Flemish Caucasians.

2018

A growing body of research in elderly populations suggests that the early phase of an explosive muscle contraction (i.e., ≤200 ms) may be more functionally relevant than peak values. However, age-related variation in early phase explosive strength has never been investigated across the full-adult life span. This cross-sectional study investigated the age-related changes in the rate of power development (RPD) and compared it to the changes in peak power (Ppeak), both in terms of magnitude and onset, across the adult life span. Age-related declines in power and determinants of muscle power were compared between sexes. 1387 adults (♂813, ♀574), aged 18-78 years, performed three maximal isoiner…

Sexual activity and life satisfaction in older adults

2018

Aim Based on the concept of successful ageing and research reports on the benefits of maintaining sexual activity in mid- to late life, the purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between global life satisfaction and sexual satisfaction in adults older than 60 years. The study also analyzed the relationship between various forms of sexual activity (genital and non-genital) and both types of satisfaction. Methods Thirty-three men and 50 women (N =83) were interviewed by using two structuralized questionnaires. Global life satisfaction was measured with Diener's Satisfaction with Life Scale, whereas sexual satisfaction and preferences regarding various intimate behaviours…

Bupropion induced changes in exploratory and anxiety-like behaviour in NMRI male mice depends on the age

2013

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of the antidepressant bupropion on anxiety and novelty-seeking in adolescent mice of different ages and adults. Behavioural differences between early adolescent, late adolescent and adult NMRI mice were measured both in the elevated plus-maze and the hole-board tasks following acute administration of bupropion (5, 10, 15, 20 mg/kg) or saline. In the plus maze test, early and late adolescent mice treated with bupropion (10, 15 mg/kg, respectively) had lower percentages of entries in the open-arms compared to their vehicle controls. Adult mice treated with bupropion did not differ from their vehicle controls. These results suggest that the effec…

Effects of a partially supervised training program in subjects over 75 years of age

2005

Background and aims: Partially supervised training programs may be preferable than class-based ones in older subjects because the adherence rate is more likely to be good and they cost less. The main purpose of this investigation was to provide some evidence of the effectiveness of a 4-month partially supervised training program. We compared it with a class-based program focusing on the knee extensor (KE) and ankle plantar flexor (APF) muscles. Methods: We selected for the study 14 subjects over 75 years of age (75+), age range 75 to 83 years with a mean age of 77.8, and 14 subjects over 65 years of age (65+), age range 65 to 72 years, mean age 66.3 years. They were moderately physically ac…

Asthma and wheezing symptoms in young people in six Western countries.

2006

Background Asthma diagnosed in children shows wide geographical variations. Large scale surveys identify children with diagnosed asthma, but neglect the group of youngsters with multiple asthmatic complaints. Methods A short validated asthma questionnaire was included in six national surveys of the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Study. Prevalence rates are presented by country, gender and age. Gender and age differences are analysed using binary and multinomial logistic regressions controlling for age and smoking. Results Large country differences are observed in the prevalence rates of diagnosed asthma (8.6%-20.9% in boys, 6.9%-18.5% in girls) and young people with “asthma-like s…

Sex differences in anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity: the benefits of estrogens

2019

Anthracyclines are the cornerstone for many oncologic treatments, but their cardiotoxicity has been recognized for several decades. Female subjects, especially before puberty and adolescence, or after menopause, seem to be more at increased risk, with the prognostic impact of this sex issue being less consistent compared to other cardiovascular risk factors. Several studies imply that sex differences could depend on the lack of the protective effect of sex hormones against the anthracycline-initiated damage in cardiac cells, or on differential mitochondria-related oxidative gene expression. This is also reflected by the results obtained with different diagnostic methods, such as cardiovascu…

Surrounding Greenness and Pregnancy Outcomes in Four Spanish Birth Cohorts

2012

Background: Green spaces have been associated with improved physical and mental health; however, the available evidence on the impact of green spaces on pregnancy is scarce. Objectives: We investigated the association between surrounding greenness and birth weight, head circumference, and gestational age at delivery. Methods: This study was based on 2, 393 singleton live births from four Spanish birth cohorts (Asturias, Gipuzkoa, Sabadell, and Valencia) located in two regions of the Iberian Peninsula with distinct climates and vegetation patterns (2003–2008). We defined surrounding greenness as average of satellite-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (Landsat 4–5 TM data at …
